I was considering trying to make it south this time, but the road snafu just puts the drive time over the top from FC.

Anybody want to meet at 7 & 72 on the 16th?

OK, we have 3 possibles, I'm the only one who has confirmed I will be at 7 & 72 Sunday.

I'll get there around 9:30 to 10:00.

It's going to be the 16th for me.
I just agreed to do something with the wife on the 15th.
So anybody thinking of the 15th - just forget it and come the 16th!!!

Hi Chris, note that I have only gotten possibles for 7 & 72 on Sunday the 16th, so that's when I'm going to be there. I'm bringing a 9mm pistol and my AR (5.56) so that's what ammo you'd need (I'll spot you a mag of each and let you shoot all the 22 you care to).
I plan to get there 9:30 or 10:00 Sunday.

I'll bring my newly made wind chime [pirate]

Sorry for short notice here but I'm in! :P

Ok noob time... I've driven the Peak to Peak plenty, and I know 72 hits 7 maybe 10mi N of Ward. Assuming this (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=40.167396,-105.459738&spn=0.006026,0.011351) is what I'm looking for (from places to shoot thread)? Realistically I may get there as late as 10:30 but I'll try to be on time. Anything else I need to know about the place? Parking? Fees? Land mines?

Didn't get any 5.56 today but I do have some 9mm. Also have a few paper targets and 3 of those hi-viz ones... those useful here or is this more like stop-at-the-grocery-store-first?

The open area north of 7 in that picture is the shooting area. If you're there early enough, you should be able to park right off the road right there, otherwise across the street (south of 7) is another flat area under the trees, and I've seen lots of people park there.

No fees, no landmines (that we know of).

ETA: I thought about it before but now I'm definitely not gonna make this one either, working a 12 tonight on 4.5 hours sleep.

I'm bringing a couple stands, a spinner for the 22 and my newly made "wind chime" target for the bigger stuff. I've got plenty of paper targets, but you can sure use yours too. Bring a stand if you've got one, but you can use one of mine no problem.

Bring fluids and sunscreen, it'll be beastly hot.

Looking forward to meet you!

WOOT!

Just got back - great time! 2C was an excellent ambassador of the group I must say, and thanks to him I've now shot my first AR!

Got some good pics I'll definitely be posting later, and 2C got a quick vid of me hitting a water jug w/ his AR. Also met Ruger, who let me fire his sick .338 Lapua (thanks for the shot and the shell bud!), and another member who's apparently been here so long he can't remember his screen name.

I'm sure 2C will be adding his own report soon.

AWESOME! Thanks again 2C, I feel like I've been initiated. More later.

And a very fine shoot it was!!

Pic's are up at http://coloradoshooting.org/ipw-web/gallery/7-16-2006-north

The wind chime is definitely showing some wear & tear.
The Dodge pickup spring material is just barely up to the task of 5.56, it seems that after a few shots have hit an area, it gets weak and eventually a shot punches through.
Besides the denting and holes, the thing is bending away from it's original curve, it looks like it will break in the middle soon enough.
I will have to give it the 9mm test to see if it holds up to that any better.
We put the thing about 40 yards out and neither Chrisguy or I were having much trouble hitting it (2.5" X 12") from prone position.
Both of us could get strings of hits before we missed one.
It definitely whips around when you hit it, gotta say I really like reactive targets.
I think a shorter length (maybe 6 or 8") would hold up better because its lighter and has less moment.

Some real jerks showed up looking all high speed and started shooting on the west end.
I didn't notice they had taken my 22 spinner, moved it and were shooting 223 at it.
By the time I went and told them to stop it had 4 holes in it. Nothing like good neighbors.

The rest of the folks today were real fine, especially Ruger and Co. (thanks for the Lapua action!)
The 3 guys right next to us were from Mexico, Taiwan, & Thailand.
They had a 22 and a sweet M1 which I got to shoot,
They tried my AR and thought it was a nice unit.
Very friendly bunch and I gave them the website.
I think I need to get some of those cards if anybody has some left.

Nice, got the vid 2c. :P

Many of my pics are similar but here's what else I got:

The range (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v186/christhisguy/Panoply/772_Newb/772area.jpg) (hey it was my first time).
Left arrow is 2C's windchime, right/rear is the big checkerboard Lapua target way back thar.

A few shots of 2C goin' to town on the steel
Ping! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v186/christhisguy/Panoply/772_Newb/DingIron1.jpg)

Heehee!

The damage (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v186/christhisguy/Panoply/772_Newb/IronZoom.jpg), about halfway through the day

Some AK (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v186/christhisguy/Panoply/772_Newb/SomeAK.jpg) I could've shot but didn't for some dumb reason.

Hadda post another one of me (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v186/christhisguy/Panoply/772_Newb/Chris338L.jpg) on the .338 Lapua. [pirate]

And of course, in all its glory... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v186/christhisguy/Panoply/772_Newb/338L.jpg)

I'd never shot a long gun before, started with a sweet AR and my 2nd long gun ever was that .338 monster (you shoulda heard that thing).
Not bad for my first time eh?

Thanks again all!

ps - Ruger, what was that lightweight model AR called again?

pps - I'm feelin' this AR thing... uh-oh.

Oh yeah, a nice guy from the Forest Svc stopped by to remind us of the rules and such. Added that he shot there too, and that shooters really need to keep the place clean if we want it to stay open. Sounded like the closing of Lefthand was imminent due to all the crap people leave there (I know that's been said before but...). There was a fire right behind the 7/72 area recently and apparently it started right at the back of the range.

Just a heads-up. Those guys that shot up 2C's spinner were quick to greet the State Trooper that stopped by later, but we didn't see 'em pick up any brass or targets. Looked like everybody else there packed out at least what they brought.

Did the FS guy(s) say anything about being set up so far back under the trees? I completely understand wanting to be in the shade and have some room to stretch the legs on that sweet looking Lapua (AR-30?) but from what I remember even our regular line in the middle of the field is only about 100 yards away from the road.

If they didn't say anything then cool, I don't care and think it's a stupid rule, but I don't want to tick anyone off that might get a range shut down.

The FS guy said, yeah we had to be 150 yards from the road, but since he was in a good mood and we were picking up and looking safe he didn't feel the need to push the issue.

It seemed like for him the overwhelming issues were trash, damaging the resource and safety. He reiterated several times the trash thing and said they strongly suspect the recent fire was shooter-caused, also he mentioned trees and rock being shot and that we had to be sure our shots were hitting dirt.

He said that since the fire, the nearby property owners have ramped up their level of complaints.

2C, what kind of ammo were you using, how far away were you and what all did you shoot it with?

3 different kinds of M193: wolf, S & B, and TG arsenal, 40 yards (guessing)
I also hit it 2 or 3 times with wwb 9mm (with my Taurus, I'm proud of that!)
And another guy with an ak took a couple shots at it.
I do know a couple holes were already in it before the 9 and ak started.
The overwhelming majority of hits on it were from the AR.

I'm going to write a topic with more details about the material, construction and results so give me a day or so.

My next test will be at closer range with the taurus, I may make a second one for that.

Here's the damage our neighbors on the firing line did to my 22 spinner.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i45/jvnn/Shoots/7_16_shoot/img_4262b.jpg

My afterthought was that since the Sheriff showed up when everyone was packing up, I should have told him they were not very responsible and would he make sure they cleaned up their brass and targets.

Anybody else think that would have been worth doing?

The FS guy did say that the sheriff could impose a lot higher fines than he could and he invited us to call the sheriff if people were doing stuff that could potentially cost us the site.

Report 'em all, let the sheriff sort 'em out. [roll] Karl.
