View Full Version : Open carry food drive idea.

I've been toying with this idea for a while now, and would like to get yalls opinion on it. I have been thinking about putting together an open carry food drive. I think it would shed a very positive light on gun owners, while simultaneously helping out our community.
One of my favorite things to do is cook a hot meal and find a random person holding up a cardboard sign and hand them their home cooked meal. Sure beats just handing them crack money, if you ask me.
What are yalls thoughts?

Are we going to be having a soup kitchen for people to eat at or are we going to have a food drive where people bring canned goods to donate. If you do the donate thing we could grill and have speakers it would be pretty bad ass.

Well I think a barbeque would be cool. And I have a kickass pa system, from my days as a pro musician. Im open to any ideas you guys have.

Once we have the location, we should probably try to reserve it for a certain day, and notify the local news organizations of our event. Thoughts? I just had this thought too: what if we get some local vendors to come set up booths and such? Or is that too much?

I'd be down for something like this. Work on the weekends though, and I'm way down south so proabably won't be able to, but I'll try. P.S. I'll probably be open carring a baby or two too ;P

I don't want to rain on any parades, but I think I'll pass on mingling shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of homeless people while my several hundred dollar pistol is hanging out on my hip.

I was talking to my mom and she have me a great idea. If all comes together, we could invite guest speakers! Maybe a pro gun political candidate?

THIS. A better plan would be just do the food drive and donate said food to local shelters. A bunch of homeless folks many of which are mentally unstable around that many guns could backfire horrendously. However the basic idea is a good one, just not that way. Get the food, donate it and get the positive press without the unnecessary risks.

Villa parker. It's a big time venue which is now trying to get into the non profit charity thing. My wife is a coordinator there.. I could see about availability...
Yeah, I think we are just talking about donating the canned foods and bbq for us.

along my same thinking. I don't really want people at their lowest point staring at my high dollar handgun. all it takes is them thinking of a reason to go for it and then all of a sudden my good intentions turn into a news story about open carry awareness to help the homeless turning into a crazed gun toting madman gunning down innocent and helpless homeless people just trying to score a hot meal.
I work with the homeless all day, i know what kind of mind set there in. most of them have bigger guns then most of us do. mostley for protection in the streets but most have foul intentions. so i can gaurantee we wont be the only ones armed. most of the shelters downtown in denver are in a not so good area so i would have to pass. i think its a great idea but i can see something going wrong and we get the blame cause of our guns. if its just a can food drive im in.

I just got a mental picture of a bunch of "gun nuts" dressed in ACU's, carrying firearms (with more than a few AR's slung over shoulders) giving food out to the homeless, giving the evil eye to "Frank", the guy sleeping on 16th and Champa, and asking him "what do you mean you don't like my mashed potatoes?". I can see the headlines now - "Local right wing MILITIA website group intimidating poor law abiding homeless into eating their lima beans - news at 11". Then Barry flies down an entire ATF goon squad to take out the now dubbed "Lima Beans Militia", which he could care less about but the whole "right wing" and "guns" got his motor running to make an example....
I like doing this kind of stuff but completely anonymous and sans the open carry :).

Wow. Thanks for such a constructive comment. You can stay at mom's and play xbox all day. Nobody here cares. Us dorks will enjoy our event no less.
