CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Monday marks the last chance for opponents of an ordinance requiring key lock boxes outside businesses and some apartment buildings.
The City Council is scheduled to vote on the third and final reading of an ordinance adopting the 2009 International Fire Code. Part of that code specifies the fire chief can require lock boxes for emergency access to keys to buildings.
The Cedar Falls ordinance would require lock boxes be installed on commercial buildings and apartment buildings with three or more separate units. Since 2004 the city has required the boxes for commercial buildings with alarm systems and apartment buildings with six or more units.
Opponents of the ordinance have mounted a spirited opposition to its adoption. They have established a website, circulated a petition and produced a video to fight against the ordinance. Those opponents claim the lock box requirement is a potential security issue and an expensive, unfair requirement for businesses.
Supporters say it can save time and property by providing firefighters easy access when an alarm sounds or a fire breaks out.
The first two considerations of the ordinance resulted in 6-1 votes in favor of the ordinance. Nick Taiber was the only council member to vote against it each time.
The City Council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, Second and Clay streets.

Do not think anything of it since every building on post has the lock boxes for the fire dept.

If you think that the police will have access to just walk in anytime they want I believe the fire dept will not go along with that as they have done here.

But then you could always screw on your tin foil a little tighter and turn this into a cop bashing thread.[Coffee]

Consistency is key........................[Beer]

I personally have little issue with LEO. Course I try to keep myself out of situations that would warrant the ire of LEO.

Just sayin.........................

As the SWAT commander said the other day-"Don't worry about the keys. We're gonna get to where we need to be either way."

I'm sure the FD can be like this too.

I've seen them around here. My understanding is that only the FD has access to the box. I would think an axe would be much faster then fiddling with keys.

After spending a few years with fire guys, its not hard to get into houses. Watched my engineer crack into one of the security-gate style doors with 3 quick pulls. not hard if you know what you are doing.

You guys are on the right track. The keys in the "knox box" are only accesible by the fire department. Each fire department has a unique key so a key from Denver would not work in Cheyenne.

Usually the boxes only have keys for the commercial occupancies although if a homeowner wants keys installed thats up to them. A lot of really nice houses have their own boxes with keys in them. It all depends on weather or not the keys are updated too. A lot of times the keys in the box are old and no longer work

Any decent fireman can force a door in quick order with tools but these keys come in real handy when its a false alarm or someone has a medical condition and cannot get to the door. No sense in ruining a $2000 door for a false alarm.

The flip side is that if someone gets ahold of one of those keys they basically have the key to the city. It will open every box in the city. Some of the boxes are wired with a tamper switch that will dispatch police when they are open, others not. Ive been with the fire department 9 years and we have never lost a key but it could happen any day.........

My biggest concern is about the people who know how to make keys by using the lock cylinder itself. What if one of them decided to take the time to crack a lock box key and then have access to all the box's? No tin foil hat here, my middle brother is serving 35 years for all of the robberies he was convicted for (and a few other things) using such a tool... Anyway, what if?
