View Full Version : Quitting smoking...
So I decided yesterday that I needed to quit smoking. I've smoked for almost 29 years and I aint getting any younger or healthier. So yesterday I stopped, I had my last cig yesterday afternoon and that was it...
Well holy sh!t if today isnt one of the longest worst frickin days of my life!!
I have been doing everything I can to try and keep my mind off of it but man its tough. Then I am outside mowing the lawn and the little disrespectful brat neighbor kids are dragging there basketball net(you know, the one with the base that you fill up with water or sand) up front and the little bastard drags the hoop across my car and gouges all the way down to metal on the door, fender and hood!! WTF!! I watched the little shit head do it, so I yelled to him and said what the heck, he just shrugs his shoulders and says "oh,, sorry" then turned around and went on draggin the basketball net out front. I flipped out and went side ways on these kids(bad day you should have scratched some ones car that didnt just quit smoking). I said man what were you thinking, are you gonna pay for this, and with the most arrogant and disrespectful reply he just says "no". Well who is then. "I dont know what to tell you man, I said I was sorry"...WTF kids today have zero respect and responsibility for anyone or anything. I was fumin, so I said, well I guess I will just call the cops then(thinking this would bring out some respect or compassion for what they just did. Nope they didnt think I would do it, so screw it, I called the po-po!!
I felt like such a dousche when I called(i called non-emergency) but the copper on the phone was actually pretty cool and agreed that he should send over a squad. So the copper shows up and asked what happened and I told him the story(I was out in the garage doing some re-loading) and I said all I really want you to do is just put a little scare into them. So he did.
On a side note the copper ended up being really cool and we sat and talked about guns for 45 minutes, neat guy to talk to.
Ok, rant over, thanks for listening but man do I want a frickin cigarette...
good luck man.
All my friends smoke and I never picked it up. dodged a bullet, I did.
find the kid's dad's car and key it. seriously.

There isnt a day that goes by I dont think about picking it up again but I don't.
I cant go through all of that again.
I cannot undo all of the time and good I have done for myself.
I cannot do that to my son.
My Motivation.
Cold turkey is the best way to go. I gave up a 30 year somkeless tobacco habit and it was the hardest thing I ever did in my life. If you can just get past the first two months or so it really does get easier. [Coffee]
Keep reminding yourself about all the money that went to cigs will now go to shooting supplies. If you buy cheap powder you will still be smoking, just having more fun [ROFL1]
Glad to hear the po-po was cool and didn't add to your stress.
Man, I'm ready to roll up a piece of paper and smoke it just to see something smokin...!!
My poor wife, thats all I have to say. Thanks god she is so patient!!
I was going for 4 months great but fell off the wagon last week it was a long shitty week socially emotionally mentally and employment wise. But I bought my one pack Friday finished it and have been working thru the cravings all right. That nicotine gum does not do anything for me same with e cigs etc.
Good luck to all the quitters it fricken sucks
Since you already have a police report, just knock on the neighbor's door and tell them to file a claim on their home owners insurance. When they don't, file a claim under your auto insurance, and once the car is completed, they'll bill your neighbors for the damages. The neighbors will either have to pay or call their insurance company to cover it for them. Then they're home owners insurance will get non-renewed and they'll have to find other insurance and will pay more for it.

I was thinking the same thing. No way in hell I would let that shit go. I am also extremely OCD with my truck...well the new one at least. the other would have just received some character and a story but that one is a 97.
good luck quitting smoking. my buddy is doing the same thing. he goes off and on but the gum usually helps him a lot so maybe look into that.
hope you make it man. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, smoked a few cigars and never touched weed or any other drug so i consider myself quite lucky in that regard.
hope you make it!

I'm on day two of no smoking. I've been smoking for 7 years. I stopped for 4 months once. Then my dad was in town visiting and when he left I got the biggest craving I've ever had. My folks don't know I smoke since I don't do it around them. So when he left, it felt like any other weekend when he'd be in town, light up as soon as he's out the driveway. That was almost 2 years ago and I hadn't attempted to quit since... Until yesterday. I ran out Sunday night before bed and just decided I wouldn't stop for a pack in the morning on the way to work. It's going okay I guess. I'm pretty irritable at home (I never would smoke at work due to the type of people I work with. Buncha smug assholes). Luckily I don't have a family or I'd probably be sleeping outside right now.
Good to know someone is going through the same thing right now.
All you guys quiting smoking, should have a get together to hand out food to the homeless. A bunch of grumpy conservatives crammed together with drugged out, drunk homeless people? That is an event I want to be at!
Best of luck bro. When I quit 7+ years ago, the worst part for me was all the crap I would hack in the mornings for a month or so straight. Then it seemed easy but add alcohol and the temptation is ridiculous.

I just think it would shed a positive light on giving up cigarettes. ;)
Thanks so much for all the support guys, its good to know I have the support and glad to hear others are going through this at the same time, cfortune we are both on the same time frame with quitting yesterday but I smoked a pack+ a day for almost 29 years. I dont smoke in the house I would always go outside, and I dont drink at all anymore(quit that over 10 years ago cold turkey too, some people thought I had a "problem" so I needed to stop that) so I dont have to worry about being at a bar and having a craving at least.
Good idea with the home owners insurance, I may have to try that. This was my Audi too, and I just spent 4 hours yesterday waxing it and it was lookin so purdy. Little shit head kids...!

Yeah, you've been smoking since before I was born lol. Best of luck to you. I did however smoke in the house and my roommate still smokes. I'm going to tell him tomorrow to start smoking outside though. I've spent the last two days packed up in my room avoiding the cravings.

I had the good idea to quit in Iraq. Nothing better to do I figured. Haven't had a cig in 2 1/2 years. If you need help try the Patch. I "quit" twice before with the nicotine gum but went back. The patch worked the best, but still needed some chewing gum for the first few weeks. Good luck, hope you meet your goal.
I quit for my son... stopped on 3/1/11

It took me 4 years before I quit the craving. After all that time I bought a pack, smoked one and got the worst headache ever. Threw the rest away and never smoked again. I used to work in an alcohol treatment center and those that talked about it said that quitting heroin is easier than nicotine. It is one of the most addictive substances there is. Good luck man.
Good luck to ya man--stick with it.
I've been smoking for 45 years now--I'm thinkin' of trying to quit again but I just really like to smoke.
I've tried quitting a few times in the past but the longest I ever lasted was about a week. After a few days I always felt that I went this long so one cigarette won't hurt--it does--next thing you know it's up to a pack + a day.
I have tried those patches but they're really tough to keep lit

And do not fit in your lip very well either.
I quit Cigs 3+ years ago...I found that the hardest thing for me was re-training your mind on what to do when you would normally be having a cig; wake-up, after meals, bored. My dentist gave me some mint packets that helped but alas after 6mo my brother in law brought back some cuban cigars and I figured "eh I wont get hooked on stoggies". Well needless to say I now smoke Swisher sweets mini's in grape. So I'll be hopping on the wagon soon guys!

This October will be two years off cigarettes for me (after 20 years), and two years off of booze next friday.
I used Camel Snus to help ween me off of the nicotine, and then I just got bored of that too. That stuff really helped me though. Good luck; it's worth it!

Thanks for all the success stories and support folks.
Like mentioned its the retraining my brain that will be the hardest. I wake up and have a smoke, make a pot of coffee, when thats done pour a cup and go have a smoke. Go take a dump! Then have a smoke. couple more smokes, then shower, get in the car, smoke. It was a habit to light up every time i got in the car. Well, I'm in sales and would get in and out of the car 7 or 8 times a day, lit up every time I got back in the car. After every meal, after sex, pretty much before, after and during EVERYTHING...
Oh well I know this will be for the better!
Thanks again folks!
14 months cig free here, would love one right now BUT DON'T EVER LET ONE TOUCH yer lips again. After one year AM coughing spell free.
You might also try cinnamon sticks.. gives you a little bite on the tongue and oral gratification

I admire those that can quit cold turkey. I've been using e-cigs to quit a week or two at a time but then there's moments when I want the real thing.
My son is 13 months now and I feel like a chump for not being able to stick to my commitment to quit for him.

I quit cold turkey. I tried the step down method, I smoked 2 packs of non filtered camles a day back in 1990. Had been doing that for 5 years. So I tried the filtered, then the light, then the ultra light, etc. Just kept smoking 3 packs of that crap to try to get the same buzzz!
Finaly said FFF IT. No more. It was very hard. But I did it!! And now once I got my sence of smell back. I can smell a smoker a mile away! Not to mention, I hunt and I can smell when the Elk are close in rut. Etc.

Best of luck man. I've tried twice, and failed twice. Here's hoping you have more willpower than me in that arena. They say that nicotine is the second most addictive substance on earth, second only to heroin.
It's not at all the same, but I've been trying to quit drinking soda, and eating other things with processed sugars in them. It sucks because I love me some soda and cookies, and candy bars. I don't eat cookies or candy bars all that often, but telling myself that I'm not going to eat them just makes me crave them.

You know what I did to help me stop smoking?
I went ahead and bought a pack of non menthol's opened it and made it sit out for as long as I went without smoking (close to 2 weeks if I remember right). Had that little urge to spark one up... so I did, and it tasted like shit. It pretty much mentally screwed me after 3 or 4 tokes and then killed it and put it back in the same pack. I continued doing that with the same pack every time I had the urge for (close to) over a month or so, and then I got sick catching the flu... oh yeeah...I tried picking up the same pack after slightly recovering and it was over... I haven't smoked since 2006.
what I'm trying to say is it's really all in the head. When your body gets an idea that this taste like shit and start feeling nauseous close to wanting to throw up nauseous it should be easier to avoid the temptation of sparking one, and end up being irritated when you smell cigarette smoke.
I don't know... Just trying to share my past experience of how I kicked smoking. Didn't use any of that fancy smoke stuff, no pills, etc... It also helped me slow down on my drinking to a point I quit drinking[Coffee] If I could do it.. anyone can do it! Good luck man... [Beer]

I'm lucky. Smoking is frowned upon at my job. When I was smoking, I'd smoke on my lunch break and that's it. I'm actually a lot better off at work then I am at home. I used to smoke inside. Luckily my roommate has agreed to step outside from now on. Good luck to you!

It was pretty easy for me after 28 years of smoking. I just decided to stop trying to quit.
I made the decision that I am a non-smoker and that was all it took. If you want to quit, make the choice that you are a non-smoker.
You either smoke or you don't. Your choice.
I think of cigrette as a cigar.
If someone offers, I smoke.
IF they don't , I don't.
So, I smoke about 4-10 cigrette per year. :D

I realized it is the Soda/Soft drink that got me gain weight (diet or regular).
I just love the carbonated drinks.
I am planning to substitute the soda with carbonated water (perrier , and etc).

Congrats on the anniversary. It's been a little over two years for me. I used Chantix though, too many years as a two pack a day smoker.
The urge is still there, but not as strong. You soon realize that the urge is all in your head. Your body doesn't really need the nicotine, but the addiction will keep trying to seduce you.
Today is 6 weeks!
I have to be honest, I am really surprised that I was able to do this. I am also pretty proud of myself for quitting. I am already starting to feel better, the cravings come and go, but I just try and think of something else and it goes away.

you can do it brother.
Tell yourself:
"Do you REALLY want to have to relive the last 6 weeks?"
Keep it going! I gave them up August 25th, 2007. I started smoking at 13 and was almost 50 when I quit. It was tough, but if I can anyone can.
Congratulations!

has food started becoming alot more complex? It has on my end. Also being able to walk into the gas station and have the buying a pack thought cross your mind but just as easily pass is an amazing feeling.

BRAVO! Your doing a good job! [Beer]
I smoked for over thirty years; the last few years it was two-to-three packs a day. I quit December 13, 2004, and I didn't really think it was too hard. However, I would NOT suggest anyone using the method I accidentally used. Briefly, I was hospitalized with other things on my mind. After four plus months, I left my habit, my right leg, the hearing in my right ear, and various other body parts and pieces when I was released.
Hang tough guys and congrats.

Willingness to quit..........Amounts in excess
So far so good today. It was strange driving to work without a smoke. Also strange not to go outside while here at work. Instead of getting away from my desk and smoking, I'm making a lap around the building.
I'm sneezing like crazy today. Is this normal? Or is there some sort of pollen or something in the air today?

I just wanna say good job y'all.
I just started a new job and I can't chew while doing it... woke up late the other day and went in without taking a dip before hand, then spent the next 8 hours putting up with idiot customers and even dumber coworkers... not good at all. The first day I started I brought my manager home with me, she stayed till 5 am or so and got to know me pretty well [Coffee], now requires me to wake up early enough to chew before I go in lol.

Tried... not enough there to have any effect. I (my body) is used to pretty big dips, usually around 3/4 to a full can a day between 3-5 dips or so.

Day 5 and still going well! I almost chewed my own arm off the other night for a smoke though. It was on day 3 and I was told that day 3 was real difficult. I don't know about these damned nicotine patches though. They give me a buzz when I first put one on in the morning and I'm fidgeting around like a hamster on crack for most of the day. Going to lower the dosage starting Monday I think. They say to wear each stage for 6 weeks, but I think that is a load of crap to sell more.
This is the first weekend without, so I guess I'll see how that goes.

9 weeks and a day for me. I did smoke 2 on a camping trip a couple of weeks ago. I also take a puff of my girlfriends (just one drag) every once in a while (once every couple of weeks). I am definitely a little "fluffier" than I was when I quit. Had a death in the family last wek and it was really hard not to go and buy a pack. For the most part I am fine and don't want it on a day to day basis anymore. I don't think the few puffs I have have been a setback at all because afterwards I realize that it tasted like shit, and I go on like it was nothing. I really can't see myself being a smoker again.
Keep it goin guys!! I havnt had even a puff in the 4 months since I quit. I do still absolutely LOVE the way they smell though when someone is smoking near me. But boy oh boy am I FAT..... [Dinner] [PizzaHut]

Congratulations, Leif! That is really something to be proud of. [Beer]
I quit after 13 years of smoking and it was a very hard thing to do. Tried weaning myself off, tried the gum, and the patches, but I just ended up smoking with them. In the end, cold-turkey was the only thing that worked. Haven't had one in 2 1/2 years now.
So I decided yesterday that I needed to quit smoking. I've smoked for almost 29 years and I aint getting any younger or healthier. So yesterday I stopped, I had my last cig yesterday afternoon and that was it...
Here's how my wife quit:
"Five minutes at a time."
She would tell herself over and over "I may not be able to stay quit forever, but I can damn sure stay quit for five minutes."
Then, five minutes later, say it again.

I'm on day 5 without any nicotine. I caught a nasty bug over the weekend and smoking cigarettes was next to impossible. So I figured that's as good as a time as any to stop. Last time I made it 4 months. I think if I can keep busy and stay clear of whiskey I'll be okay.
Should break his hoop say I'm sorry and walk away. Then drop kick the little fucker in the chest it might not help the urge to smoke, but it will be just as satisfying!!

Congrats on quitting!
It's a bitch. I smoked for 19 years on and off. Started around 16. March 10th 2011 I had my last cigarette. Started chewing and gave that up in October of last year so I have been nicotine free for 8 months.
I quit for 2 years back in 2004 but started up again in 2006. It just took one drag off a girlfriends cigarette to get me back on the shit. I'd have half of one, then I bought a pack and it was all over.
After getting off the nicotine I started eating more. Had to make some dietary changes, Quit drinking 3-4 Cokes a day and gave up the super fatty food. Also started mountain biking again after taking a couple years off. Man it feels good to have lungs that work.

You know what helped me quit 5 or 6 years ago...?
I bought a pack and made it rot... and when I felt I was jonesing for a smoke. I'd lite one up... tried not to finish it and just put it back into the pack with the rest... shit lasted for a while until I threw it away because it mind fucked me tasting like shit.
That next cigarette you bum.. try not to finish it and keep it hanging around till you get another crave and try sparking that one up after sitting for a day or two... pretty sure that'll mess you up a little..
Other than that... be strong man! You can do it! [Beer]
I am down to like 1 or 2 a day. I can go a week without one. I just smoke when I feel like it and put it out the second I am good. Which might be 3 puffs. I would quite if others around me did not smoke. But I have been like this for over a decade. I don't think I could ever smoke a pack a day. I am thinking about totally kicking it by summer.
It's all in your head. There is nothing hard about quitting smoking. Just got to have the right mindset. What help me when I was quitting I had to visualize my addiction to cigarettes as a parasite, and I had to simply starve this creature by not smoking cigarettes. At that point it just become the game I win or this nasty parasite. I end up winning over 5 years now. If you have time to read this (http://media.wix.com/ugd/74fa87_2010cc5496521431188f905b7234a829.pdf), do it. It will get you into right mindset.
Didn't read all 16 pages, but wanted to throw in my 2cents since I'm trying to quit. I've been a light/social smoker about a pack a week, mostly on weekends when drinking, but also on the daily commutes. I just stopped a couple weeks ago and only take a few drags of an E-cigarette every day, even skipping some days.
Those things work! I have ZERO cravings ever. Granted that means I'm still addicted a little, but I use it so little, that it won't be long before I'm done completely. Way better than gum or patches I think. It's only $10 for a single-pack that's pre-charged, and I'm still using it. Supposedly it works for 300 draws, I haven't kept track though. Takes some getting use to because when you draw on it at first it's kinda weird, hard to explain. Try it! Just get a single, no need to pay $50 for the starter kit, until you know you need it. I predict I'll buy one more when this one is tapped out, and taper off completely with that one. Worth $20!

To be honest, e-cigs are how I've dropped cigarettes. I've got about $300 wrapped up in all of my vaping stuff but have saved about $150 on cigarettes net. I've also been able to get a couple of my buddies to switch from cigarettes to e-cigs and they're both smoke free for about a month now.
Smoked on and off for 12 years, mainly on. Was a bad chainsmoker when on. Finally gave it the boot for good in December, along with binge drinking. I have a tin of Camel Snu's out in my car (like chew, but you don't have to spit) that I use when I need a pick-me-up, but a tin lasts me a month or two. Not healthy, but definitely less risk than cigarettes. Now that I kicked two bad habits prior to the new year, I felt like the only resolution I needed to make was skydiving and a road trip. Grin.

Unfortunately I don't remember which brand, just that was like $9.85 at one of those "Smoker Friendly" strip-mall shops. The one in Thornton off 120th I think. The lady there was super cool, she explained about how it works. You start with a certain nicotine level, then move down to a lower one, then quit. Some people start by alternating between an occasional regular cig with the E-cig, which helps a lot. I don't think it's a miracle worker, since I don't smoke that heavy to start with, but it's worth a try, imo. A heavy smoker might need to spend the $50 on the starter kits. A friend of mine likes the "Blue" kind you can buy at Walgreens. Cant' speak to the other brands, but there are different flavors, even Menthol.
AND OF COURSE, as with all medical related things, read about the downsides or risks. Since I don't plan on doing these for more than a couple months, and very infrequently, I decided to not worry:
http://www.primehealthchannel.com/electronic-cigarette-dangers-and-side-effects.html
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/08/science/e-cigarettes-help-smokers-quit-but-they-have-some-unlikely-critics.html
I have to do the same thing again soon. I quit for almost 2 years and found the electric smokes that led me back to smoking again. After about the first month or so it is not so bad and I think I can use the electric cigs to quit again.

I interviewed a guy once and he said quitting smoking was one of the hardest things he has done (stupid interview question). Said he used Chantix. Might give that a try. I've gone anywhere from 3 days not smoking to 4 months (I think this story is in this thread). I don't know what my deal is. At 16:00 today I was thinking how much better I felt from not smoking for a few days. Then an hour later I'm at the gas station getting gas and buying a pack.
I quit in january. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done.January would have marked me second year if I would not have started up a few months back. My wife quit when she found out she was pregnant with my first son cold turkey and has not looked back for 6 years, so you can only imagine the looks I got when I started up again. I am sure many of the married guys on here know the look.

Think of it this way, you who are trying to quit.
Smoking used to be a sign of toughness, now it's a sign of weakness.
Be strong!
I interviewed a guy once and he said quitting smoking was one of the hardest things he has done (stupid interview question). Said he used Chantix. Might give that a try. id be very careful using drugs too quit.....about 10 years ago i got wellbutrin to help me quit.....and while i had no cigarette cravings it turned me into a monster i was having huge rage outs punching holes in the walls etc(im like normally the calmest guy ever )it was UNCONTROLLABLE....... i stopped after 2 weeks went back to normal and quit cold turkey about 2 years later those big pharma drugs are scary as hell
bottom line is if you dont want to quit your not going to
Good luck to all that quit or are quitting. Stay strong we can do this.
I have been smoke free for 1 1/2 years now and feel ok. I gained 50 fricken pounds that I have been trying to lose but that is proving tough also. I have not have one single cig, but I have cravings still almost every day.

Totally, I stay away from that shit. I know it helps some people though, especially those who are unlucky enough to have panic attacks, high anxiety, etc. I for one don't trust ANYTHING that causes anger management issues, or messes with my sex drive, lol!
Well, today is 2 years!! I am amazed i havnt smoked in two years. There is not a day that goes by that I dont wish I was smoking a cig. I still love the smell and get as close to a smoker as I can so I can get a wiff.
Anyway, 2 years is a huge milestone for me!!
Congrats on 2 years smoke free!
I've been chew-free since October. Quit cold turkey (went through a lot of sunflower seeds) and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself.

Awesome and congrats! I can't imagine still wanting one. It's been 15 years for me but when I quit I never looked back. Every so often one will smell good but for the most part I hate the smell and haven't really wanted one since. I wish you many more smoke free years!

I've heard it's easier to quit cocaine than it is to quit cigarettes.
Easier to quit cigarettes if you have some cocaine. [ROFL1]
I kid.

Accupuncture and/or hypnosis. Thank me later. Hypnosis is the absolute best.
Thanks guys, yes I hope for many more smoke free years also. I dont imagine starting again, I would rather live longer to spend more time with my family
Please don't turn into one of those pussy hippies who gets all butt hurt about smoking.
This lady today kept mention how this girl was "chain smoking one cigarette after another." She brought it up so many times that I flat out asked her if she felt like how many cigarettes this girl smoked after the accident contributed to the accident.
My favorite part was the second time that she mentioned that both her and her daughter "...are asthmatic, so of course we noticed that she was smoking. Let's be honest, she was asphyxiating us."
I've never heard such a dramatic whiner. I had to force this lady to hang up the phone!
Anyway, congratulations.

2 years quit is flat out fantastic! I've got 5 smoke free on Monday. Best decision I ever made. Whatever you do, just don't ever take that first puff.

Be strong, don't smoke.
It was simple for me after 20 plus years of smoking. I asked the question, am I a smoker or a non smoker. I decide to be a non smoker and that was it. I haven't smoked since 2000.
Decide who you are and be that person.
I'm backing you on this one.
I quit way back when but had smoked for many years. Finally quit cold turkey but pretty much slept for about 4 days so I wouldn't think about needing to smoke one. Got up and pee'd and went back to sleep :)
Thanks everyone and congrats to all the other quitters out there!

Hang in there!! 29 years of smoking? Dude I seriously didn't think you were older than 35 or so...... Started at 6, I guess....

Congrats, stick with it!
I smoked for 7 years. I quit when I got strep throat and could no longer smoke. Then when I was at my weakest, my roomie was smoking, I was 3 seconds away from bumming a cigarette when he said he was proud of me for quitting.
10 years later there are still moments of craving, but they are weak and pass quickly.
