What do you guys think would be the best frame/slide combination (same manuf) with which to begin a custom 1911 Commander-size build?

Let's try to figure out what it is you are wanting-a good carry piece or something that is going to the Nth degree in quality.
With it being a Commander you are going to be limited in aftermarket choices. You may very well be served by finding a complete Commander and rebuilding it to what you want.

If he's looking for a real commander (4.25"), he won't be very limited at all in terms of aftermarket choices.

Yup- real standard type Commander size. No bull barrels, no compensator, no silencers. Think customized mid-70s Colt CC.
