i was unsure what would happen here... i have a "spinner" target and have just used it with .22s. i decided hmmm, what would happen at 10yards with the ar15. well i found out, i was hoping it would blow a hole straight through, that would have been impressive but what it did do is go about 95% through and leave a .45 size hole. im surprised it didnt make it. it DID penetrate the full 1/2 inch but it is bubbled out on the other side.
one of the interesting parts is the bullets jacket is on the outside of the hole, it makes up the "blown out" part.
was hard to get a good pic, this is the best i could do

Now try the same thing with SS109 or M855....I'll bet you get a different result.

heh.. i attempted a 3" magnum 12ga slug... i only had 1 with me though and unfotunantly somehow i missed. i was standing pretty far back in fear of something coming back at me....
probably would have just flattened on impact and just make a big circle around the POI.
im sorry... im retarded, i dont reconize either ss109 or m855

M855=5.56x45 Mil-Spec ammo with a steel penetrator.
A good source of info regarding ammo:
The AR15.com Ammo-Oracle (http://www.ammo-oracle.com/body.htm)

whoah... holy sh*t. are those legal? i gotta get me some of those. i am just using old surplus .223s. if my ammo did that to 1/2" steel i wonder what those would do. probably want to step up to 3/4" for those

i did get hit in the arm with something on that shot i have pictured... didnt feel very good.

yeah i should really be behind some type of barricade-not exposing myself.
kinda like when i thought it was a good idea to shoot big cement cylinder with buckshot. not sure if it was the shot or the concrete but several somethings got me in the stomach pretty good. looked kinda like i got shot with a paintball gun a couple times

whoah... holy sh*t. are those legal?Yes. It's still not considered "armor piercing".
This is covered in the Ammo-Oracle linked earlier;

Most of what I buy is surplus M855.

HSM 62gr fmj (same as ss109)will go thru 1/2 steel also, its mostly what i shoot, its hotter than i figured, on there site they rate it at 3150fps and it felt hotter than that when shot. Through Mr. Uzi's chrono at the last south shoot these pulled 3300+ out of my 20" barrel so 3150 would be about right out of a 14-16" barrel.

anyone reconize those let me know would be interesting since he said hes had the ammo since he bought the rifle in '81. btw never had a misfire or any kind of jam and i just finished off that 2000 rnds today.holy sh** now i have to buy ammo for it... that must suck

yeah im shooting with a 20" 1 in 9 i think.. all the barrel is stamped with is C MP CHROME BORE

seems it was made right though! no problems at all- of course, it hasnt got wet. it doesnt appear that there is any type of seal on either primer or neck
