Denver City Council eases way to own chickens, goats at home

http://www.denverpost.com/politics/ci_18319369

Now the resident undocumented can feel right at home, just like their third world shithole.

The license will allow them to keep up to eight chickens or ducks — but not roosters or drakes — and up to two dwarf goats without having to get a zoning permit or notify the public.

Some people will say that this is for the 'yuppie urban farmer', that's just cover so Denver can cater to more illegal alien scum.

This was the crux of a conversation my wife and I had regarding this idea. She works in the Highlands area which is prime tree hugging, pot and pole smoking and carpet munching liberal Denver. She thought it was a great idea, that you now don't have to go to Sunflower Market to get your Holistic eggs.
I thought it was a great way to turn your neighborhood into Juarez. I can see future headlines: "Chicken Thief Caught" or "Loose Chickens Cause 35 Car Wreck on I-70 and Lowell".

Nice move Denver City Council.
"Green Acres is the place to be................."

If you want to raise chickens, goats and such WTF did you buy a house in Denver?

I agree, more liberal catering to borderjumpers who want to turn Denver into Mexico City. We're already out numbered here.
Also, side note, I just learned for the first time last night that New Mexico is the only U.S. state that has their state constitution in English AND Spanish.... we're starting to move to a bilingual country and I don't like it... call it my racist or prejudiced nature but I think Spanish is a filthy language.

You can have goats or chickens in almost all the unincorporated counties in the state and I don't know of one that looks like Juarez...just saying.

I doubt anyone notices a difference. Denver actually voted for LESS government regulation here, the opposite of what they normally do.

Seems like less to me. Now if you want to have a few chickens you just can and don't have to get permission from the city government.

WTF do you need chickens for? That's what has me confused. Who the heck needs chickens and goats? I'd go buy that silenced .22 and start popping off at the animals if my neighbor got them just because he can. Goats are annoying and disgusting, and chickens just make a mess... that's why we pay farmers to take care of that crap out in rural America. [Dunno] I just don't get it...

[/Devil's advocate]

you dont want me telling you what you can do on your property, its a two edged sword.
or you can move to a/Create a HOA.

Personally. I dont want ducks, chickens and goats...
Just saying, I thought we wanted less government in our Business, not more.

WTF do you need guns for...? Whatever they think they need or what they want is their business. Some guy's 6 chickens making a mess in his yard doesn't make a mess in your yard. If you don't want to live next to some guy with chickens, move to a community with an HOA that doesn't allow it. The government shouldn't be involved.

If some guy wants to raise chickens to harvest and eat them and their eggs rather than go buy them at the store that's his business. YOU may not think he needs to but a lot of people also think there is no need to hunt because you can buy meat at the store...

Edit: Byte beat me to the argument...

No, Mexican is a filthy language. Spanish is beautiful. Mexican is full of slang and different dialect that makes it sound annoying...much like Chinese.

OT, I don't really know what the big deal here is. It doesn't seem like this is going to be as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.

I was doing a bit of a sarcastic rant, guess I should have made that clear. But I just don't get outside of farming why someone would want to burden themselves with having to care for livestock like that. Although I see one good thing about chickens (aside from tasty meat and eggs) is the whole pop their head off and watch 'em run around for a bit [ROFL1]
But honestly, I was going over the top with the whole confused as to why anyone would want chickens and goats.

It won't be. I live in unincorporated Jefferson County between Littleton and Lakewood. We can have livestock, chickens, whatever. How many people in my neighborhood do? None that I know of. And yes, it is a VERY diverse neighborhood.

I know what you mean and I didn't think of it while I was posting the original post.

This goes back to freedom of choice, if a person doesn't like what his city or county allow his neighbor to do then he has 2 choices. 1. Put up with it.
2. Move to a city or county that has rules that appeal to the person.

Back in the olden days when farming was much more prevalent I suppose people would move to the city to get away from the farm and it's noises and smells. These folks were happy to put up with city noises and smells.

I have no problem with the government getting out of the way of my right to have chickens on my property. People just need to be sensible and not let it adversely affect their neighbors.

I'm the last person you'll find complaining about the government getting out of the way.

As for the reasons why this is good: Urban homesteading isn't just some hippy ideal. There are many right wing individuals with a preparedness mindset that will take full advantage of this.

When a person is on the government dole or independently wealthy they have time to take care of farm animals.

Denver allows people to keep a few animals but they cannot slaughter them, the animal has to be taken somewhere to be slaughtered. Like some illegal is going to follow that rule.

< Right wing, want chickens, also real farms are EXPENSIVE.

I see no problem with this. I prefer to be left alone at every turn, be it right or left leaning classically.

Also Chinese isn't a language, they speak Mandarin or Cantonese for the most part, I don't like the sound of either. I personally prefer the sound of Mexican/Latin American Spanish to Castilian, too much lisping in the Old World. That said, I think English is just fine for the US and it is much easier to remain that way. It seems most countries that allow for multiple national languages also have movements supporting secession.

That's certainly not the case. I've known a quite a few working class, non farming people that have kept rabbits, chickens, etc. for food purposes.

Phew, I'm not alone, okay. And true, I find Cheech Marin to be an annoying little fat, dirty Mexican, but Antonio Banderas I find to be a refined, handsome Spaniard who makes pretty good movies. I guess it's just I have had too many dealings with the dirty ones who come here and refuse to learn English.

I stand corrected. It just comes down to how a person chooses to spend their free time.

I keep a flock of about 20 chickens. I am also on 2 acres in the county. I speak English too. :) We raise them for eggs, which can supply my family with all the protein they need daily. I do not know if it is a good thing in the suburbs or the city. But if you do not have a rooster, they would go virtually undetected in a small flock.

Goats on the other hand are noisy whiney creatures.

That I'm not entirely sure of. I would imagine that you could string it out for a decent amount of time if you wanted. my sister in law has had the same chickens for about 5 years now. They don't lay as much as they used to but she still gets a few eggs out of them a day.

Once they stop laying eggs then you have chicken for dinner that night.

If SHTF and you think your neighbors in Denver will steal them, bring them inside. You're wife won't like it but you'll have more urgent things to worry about than some chickens wrecking your carpet.

I am all freedom to do what a person wants. But back yard farms tend to become unsanitary after while and are prime to spread disease.
For instance Exotic Newcastlel Disease outbreak in LA a few years back
Cost tax payers millions
