View Full Version : How do you light a propane grill?
No seriously, I've never used one. I snagged this Sunbeam propane camp grill at an estate sale today. Looks just like this.

Except mine has the propane attachment/control valve. The seal looks good and it cleaned up very nicely. Do you put the valve on the "light" position and hold a match in there? I really don't know how to do this. Total noob question.

Very carefully. [Coffee]
sorry, I just had to...
I was about to try it a few minutes before I went to bed. Then thought better. I'll get some sleep and try it outside tomorrow.
It doesn't have an electronic starter I would guess?
Or it's dead.
Yeah for the most part, use a long match. Unless you have real talent, then you can use a zippo. [Tooth]

should be a hole in the bottom where you put either a long match or one of those long stick lighters made for this kinda thing...

This unless it is an electronic ignition model. Probably needs just a AA battery if it is. Buy one of the long reach trigger lighters. Or drop a match in and pull your hand back quick but light it as soon as you turn the gas on

These don't spit out that much propane. I have one I use for camping. Take out the grate and flame cover. Then turn on the gas to high. Use a regular lighter and stick it next to the burner. You're not gonna burn your arm off. These only put off about an inch of flame.

I usually just take the grate off and light my small propane grill with a bic lighter. You shouldn't have any problems doing it that way. Just be ready to move your hand when it's lit.

Of course my new answer for every "How do you do this..." question will now be one word.
"Google."
I did Google it. I had considered taking the flame cover off, but it took me so long to put it on, I figured it'd be hot again by the time I got it back in place. Does not have a sparker, and does not have an access hole. Long match it is! Thanks fellas.
We used this grill tonight to grill some steaks. They turned out wonderful. Much better than on the frying pan. Also, I was impressed with how much propane was left. Seems like you could camp for a whole week on one of those little blue bottles. Very cool.
