Had some bidness in Denver yesterday so took the family along to see some sites. Hadn't been downtown in years. Hit the Aquarium, Spaghetti Factory, and Cheesecake Factory. Great time.
After this the kids, ages 11 & 12, wanted to shop and see Larimer Square and 16th St. It was around 3pm. Shouldn't have done it.
Kids were walking maybe 10 feet in front of us and 3 TIMES some pukes from "Planned Parenthood" approached my kids and started talking to them!!! WTF? They didn't want to talk to the adults- they were talking to my kids. What the hell does Planned Parenthood have to discuss with kids? Bunch of Coss Dunts. First time I was shocked and just pulled the kids away, talked to them about what PP is and what they do. By the 3rd time I was getting pissed. Finally my kids just told them to leave them alone. That was cool.
Then were got approached twice by Greenpeace. Loved the guy shouting at me, asking me if I was interested in "saving his world, not mine". Wow. Why didn't he want to save both our worlds?
Then the street hawker selling cologne. He approached me and tried selling me something out of his backpack. I told him "no". He then asked me what cologne I use. I told him "none". He then sprayed me with whatever he had in his hand and told me I should be using cologne because I needed it. Nice. Insulted and sprayed with whatever just because.
Then the ultimate. The trannies. Two different places, broad daylight, in all there splendor and glory. Guess I'm just not used to seeing that stuff. Both were Latino, pretty unattractive, and seemed proud. High heels, makeup, jewelry, Spandex, and vocal. One had a goatee. Amazing. Kids had never seen that before. They spotted them before I did. They were just blown away by that.
Think it will be a few more years til I go back to Denver. Just don't know how city dwellers do it. I was only downtown 4-5 hrs but all that cement, enclosed space, and lack of green freaked me out. Got home and had to get outside, see some sky, and open spaces. T. Jefferson was right, cities suck.
Gotta love LoDo... where else could you be so entertained and not have to pay an admission price? [Beer]
You should have gone down last weekend.... the gay pride festival was going on. [ROFL1]

You do pay an admission price. There is a 1% RTD sales tax if you live in the RTD service area.
Carry one of these, it'll keep the wierdos away. Might attract the Trekkie wierdos though.

The Planned Parent Hood stuff seems weird to me. I've been to Planned Parent Hood a few times in my life, and they never seemed weird to me. Then, I always hear stuff about them very strongly pushing their agenda. At least the few times I went there, it just seemed like a regular ole clinic. I guess I wasn't some 13 year-old prostitute either though.
Haha, I didn't mean it that way. Whoops. I was thinking about the Acorn thing.
Planned Parenthood, Greenpeace, and other "non profit" groups hire canvassers from craigslist and backpage. They pay them a percentage of the donations and have a very high turnover rate.
Creepy that they wanted to talk to your kids. Kids don't have the resources to make donations. But that's what happens when you hire stoners from craigslist to work for straight commission.

Little more then creepy IMO. I wouldn't have been polite with them.....

It makes perfect sense. While teens aren't their donating demographic they are their business demographic.
The mall is definitely interesting but I can only handle a once a year visit or so.

I hate these people. They're always on the DU campus trying to talk to me. Hello, I'm trying to go to class not give you my money.

Both were Latino, pretty unattractive, and seemed proud.
Damn.
Anyways,
Anyone ever see that Black Guy dress in a Pseudo-Power Ranger/robot costume that performs on the 16th street mall. He's pretty funny.
Funny that you say that Clint, I was just talking to a guy that moved here from Philly while working on the Obama campaign. He was telling me all these stories of working for non-profits and doing all kinds of shady things. For instance, at one place, his job was to cold call people for money to prevent a bill from passing. At the time he was doing that job, that particular bill had passed over a year ago. They lost, and were still calling people to get money from them. Super shady.
Damn.

I've seen him a few times, but it's been years since I used to hang out down there.

Last time I was on the 16th SM there was a massive riot between two groups of mexicano gang bangers. Got a free meal by throwing one out of a patio area.[Coffee]

You have a higher tolerance for that crap than me I guess. I probably would have given that guy a mouth full of fist.

20 years ago (July 1991). Late night, close to downtown.
Mom was in the hospital dying and my son and I had been down there to see her. A cousin and his wife were with us. We went into a Denny's on the way home, at about midnight or so.
A cross-dresser walked into the place and I could see my son (7 years old at the time) giving "her" the Mark-I eyeball scan. I could tell he was pretty confused but I didn't say anything to him about it. Finally, he whispered to me, "Dad, is that a MAN dressed like a lady?"
Pretty observant for a 7-year old, I'd say. I explained it to him but we avoided that part of town after that.
Still do. I absolutely despise the urban scene. I deal with it because sometimes my job requires it, but nobody can force me to like it.
That's part of the reason why we live where we do; our nearest neighbor is a mile down the dirt road.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. I'm allergic to a lot of the perfume and colognes, spray me when I don't want it. Whack. Go ahead and file assault charges, I'll do the same.

I don't know where you people go, or what you look like, but I've never had anything happen to me more than a bum ask me for change. And I go downtown very often.

While I don't go that way very often, I too am only approached by the homeless for money. Perhaps the original poster just looks friendlier and more approachable than myself or DeusExMachina. [Beer]
the greenpeace people are at the airport. they approach me when not in uniform and I tell them I enjoy hunting whales and to go back to california without missing a step.

This is the perfect example of why you should carry a little bottle of pepper spray with you - he sprays you uninvited, you spray him back - you win!

Just don't know how city dwellers do it.
It will eventually get to you, even if you don't see it. I lived in Las Vegas, NV for 15 years and was surrounded by these type of hammer fodder. Honestly it's why I came back to CO. It changed me to the extent that my automatic responce to somone asking me for a ciggarette was "go fuck yourself" ... litteraly, I had become that much of an asshole. Maybe I'm just weak but it makes you hate people. My friend and I would go to the strip, let the pushers give us thier porno magazines (for the call girls), and when they would look away to give it to the next guy, we would rack them across the face with it. Okay, thats still kinda funny...but really, it will get to you. Its even worse (if you ask me) when that stuff becomes normal in your eyes.

I drove carriage on the 16th Street Mall five years ago. There was a problem with assholes milling around getting in the way of tourists. People begging, hustling, pimping then and I heard it has gotten worse. Even back then Denver PD had mall patrol.
I can't beleive that the Chamber of Commerce hasn't done anything. I have to beleive that some business's are losing money because of the assholes. the big hotels have conventions, etc. I made the most money during convention.
Everyone has the right to do whatever UNTIL in affects someone else,,,,
I am v ery surprised nothing has been done

This is another example of something I have no idea what you're talking about. I walked up and down 16th last night and did not see one instance of this. Some tourist cramming into the mall ride made a pass at the girl I was with, but he was just joking.
If you think Denver is bad, don't go to NYC.

They seem to hide out at night. I haven't had too bad of a time with them during the day on 16th either though. Maybe once or twice waiting for food at the Thai Cart but they've kinda got a captive audience there.

This is part of the fun of the City! Where else can you see freaks and Tranny's just by walking down the street? Part of the fun is people watching! I personally love watching the "Freak Show", makes me feel better about my person/life decisions. I like to have lunch on the patio downtown, its like a freaky aquarium, I just watch them swim on past and point and say "ooh look at that one!"
Its really not too bad in Denver, I think they may have spotted you for "out-of-towner" and swarmed you. Most don't usually get hassled like that, if someone starts, I will fire off a "crusty look" as a warning shot and they go on to easier prey.
I think its good for kids too, because with your oversight they can see what people can become, and you (family) can set some higher expectations for them.
I work at 17th and Curtis, right in the heart of the area. I try to avoid the mall as much as I can, but have to go down there for lunch once in awhile. Plenty of wierdos running around, but they rarely bother me. I do enjoy ogling all the fine hotties strutting around down there! There's some damn fine looking women in Denver, I'll tell ya that.
A lot of con men, pickpockets, petty thieves, drug dealers, and assorted other vermin REGULARLY take the RTD bus from Aurora and Lakewood to the stop at Colfax & Broadway, where they then proceed to the Mall. That is where many of them originate from.

"HEY Why are you talking to my Minor Child without consent? Are you a Pedophile? You trying to talking him out for Ice cream and a a little date-rape you FREAK?
POLICE! POLICE! POLICE!"
"Yes Officer this stranger approached my child and started talking about Sex. Yes I will sign a complaint."

well, you can't keep the fam blindfolded forever. at some point they will have to experience all the craziness of the world. in my opinion denver is a good place to start because although different than the smaller communities in colorado, its not outrageous. its good for people to be exposed to that stuff once in a while as long as they are taught about it. theyll see worse at college.
the greenpeace and PPH folks are easy enough to avoid. just stay off 16th. after living here a few years ive decided to avoid 16th street on many days, only occasionally going there if there is a particular restaurant i want to go to. it draws more creeps and beggars than the rest of lodo. there are plenty of restaurants, micro brews, interesting shops, etc in the rest of lodo. if i had kids id spend 90% of my day down by the river. ive kayaked it, rafted it, swam with my dog in it, played water games with friends, then check out rei, maybe do some free rock climbing, then hit up a restaurant or cafe in the area (allowing dogs to chill while you eat is always a nice bonus). ive been all around the US and in my opinion denver is the best or next best city ive ever been to. their downtown has lots of options, interesting privately owned shops and eateries, is easily accessible, cheap parking, overall VERY safe, and in many ways beautiful. the river park is kept natural prairie like, the baseball stadium sells $4 tickets for every game, and its actually a quite quiet downtown. most major cities are dirty, ugly, too congested, impossible to park or walk anywhere and very dangerous.
i love this city.

I work downtown but I never go to 16th street mall unless I want chick-fil-a. But 16th street has nothing on the Colfax corridor. I am an LEO so I am not surprised by anything anymore.
Yet another reason why I don't live in the city.
I can't even stand Pearl Street in Boulder!
Hippies, democrats and Prius drivers - need I say more!

+1. Any time you move into a new home, if you go out in your yard in the middle of the night butt-naked with your favorite firearm and scream obscenities and pretend to be mad at an imaginary friend, you will never have any problems with your neighbors. They will know to leave you the hell alone. [Coffee]

Heh, I see a LOT of women like that working here in a Downtown office building! Along with tons of true, qualified MILFS. OMG, there's some hotties around here.....good thing I look like a homeless bum or they'd be all over me! [ROFL1]
The Cologne guy creeps me out more than anything else. I agree with Ginsue - and if I didn't have mace handy I'd fill a bottle with piss and dump it on him.
A kid tried to sell me cologne out of his backpack today. Because I had recently read this thread, I was far more rude to him than I usually am. I even prepared my right hand to knock his jaw off if he tried to spray me.
