View Full Version : Nickel plated sissy pistol...
So against my advice my friend went out and bought a "Nickel Plated sissy pistol" much like this:

It's a Smith & Wesson, which he likes the brand (and so do I) but this is a little flashy for his first pistol and he plans to carry it, plus it reminds me of the part in U.S. Marshals when Tommy Lee tells RDJ to ditch the "nickel plated sissy pistol" for a Glock. I didn't suggest Glock, but I said if you wanna stick with S&W go with the M&P. If not, I back Sig and pretty much any good 1911 (Dan Wesson and Nighthawk are out b/c of price) manuf. is another advised route to go. I told him how much I like my Springfield 1911GI, and how Colt 1911's are good, but then he goes this route... what can you do? I'll just let him be and tell him to enjoy it lol.

Not bad looking but I could never live with it. I owned one pistol one time that I sold the next week that had that feature.
That feature caused me to say again and again. Safety goes up, safety goes up, safety goes up.......... Born and raised on safety's that go down.[Coffee]

At least it's not a Taurus PT945, like in the movie. As far as Smith autos go, if it's not the M&P, I don't like it very much. But if it works for him...

My first handgun was a stainless SA Loaded Champ and I carried it for almost two years. The S&W isn't nearly as flashy as a shiny 1911.
I was under the impression that these were some of the best Smith & Wesson autos (with the exception of the new M&P's).

Not saying they're lousy weapons, just saying I don't like em.

I'd much rather have a 3rd gen Smith than an M&P. I'm not familiar with the sights on that one, but I think he'll be happy.
And for what it's worth, I'm with Jerry on the safety... shot 1911's too long, and it's backwards to me. Nothing insurmountable, just a training issue. If you're used to the M9 it would be perfect.
What model is this?
That is a third generation S&W with adjustable sights. They made them in blue and stainless. Some alloy frame had a finish that looked like stainless.
No nickel ones that I know of.
On of my first pistols was a S&W Ladyhawk 9mm - looks nearly identical to yours. It's one of the best and most accurate 9's I own (yes, I still have it and shoot it regularly). It fits great in my hand, has a great trigger and is "shoot the wings off a fly" accurate.
Hell, sissy or not, if it shoots straight and holds up then who the hell cares if it's nickel plated, gold plated or crap stained?
I've got another "not so" sissy nickel plated 686 S&W .357 that is also a fantastic weapon. That guy will blow the hell out of anything you shoot at and leave your hand sore after a little while.

"Nickel plated sissy pistol..."
I have Several S&W 6906's and 5906's, similar to that shown in your photo, and I took mine all the way apart... even looked under the Grips... can't seem to find any Nickel Plating... at all...
I'm confused... are you saying that a Generation III Smith & Wesson Semi-Auto Pistol is not a Well Made, High-Quality Weapon? Do you have some "issue" with Stainless Steel & Alloy Construction? What is the "sissy" factor to which you allude? What is the point that you are trying to make??? [Eek3]

Point was trying to be funny (fail I guess)... and his that he bought is actually nickel plated. I just compared our conversation that that of Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr. in US Marshals. I just told him for his first gun getting that flashy .45 and trying to be tactical with it isn't really the best thing, now if he wants a big flashy gun that's cool.

Oakie Doakie! Now I'm up to speed... It just sailed right on over my pointy l'il head and I didn't even catch on to it at all!![Stick] DOH!
Actually the third generation S&W self-loaders are among the most reliable pistols ever made. I have experienced more malfunctions with Glocks than with the Smiths. Of about 20 or so third generation smiths I've fired over the last couple of decades, in many thousands of rounds, I've experienced three malfunctions - two failures to feed with cheap practice ammunition in one 5906 and a failure to go fully into battery in a 3913 with an over-sized reload I had to borrow at a match (there was an unexpected 'shoot off' for first place).
Even when deliberately limp-wristing the pistols, I have been unable to induce any other malfunctions. I still have a 3913 purchased in 1994 and through which I have fired somewhere over ten thousand rounds over the years. It is still reliable, with no malfunctions other than the one bad-ammo failure mentioned earlier that can hardly be blamed on the pistol. It is small enough to conceal effectively and large enough to shoot well under stress - over a third of the trophies and ribbons I have were won with that gun, despite it not being 'suitable' for competition.
I think your friend made a good choice...
