Anybody in the northern CO area who's planning on building, or has built, a FAL kit? I'm intending to purchase the receiver and kit next month, but know enough to admit there's a few things about it I don't completely understand. I'd feel a lot more comfortable if someone were to walk me through it, or better yet, could watch over my shoulder.
http://www.falfiles.com has some great info and an excellent source of help if you haven't been there yet.

I've never built one from scratch but I stripped mine down to a barreled reciever and lots of ziplock baggies of parts when I painted it.
Everything went back together, no missing pieces, no extra (and it still shoots just fine, it was even dead on sights-wize without any ajustment but that was just luck).
I'm in Aurora (which isn't VERY northern, but it ain't the springs) but I work nights so scheduling may be an issue.
What questions do you have as of right now?
the two hardest things in an FAL build is the bbl timing and headspace. Everything else is a piece of cake!
If you don't have your receiver, don't get too excited about getting this built till mid 07 (if you get on his list right now).
I just talked to Harlan over at DSA. They won't be doing any type 1s till then. If it'a an IMBEL and you want a realistic to period receiver, forget it. He said they are still in design.
As for the semi conversion parts. I can't remember who had them. I did a search for them yesterday. Go to the FAL board and look for the dealer zone. I think I found the link in there. Good luck.
Kits are getting scarce. Mine is coming from inter ordinance. Do a search for FAL kits......
IMO, DSA is the only place to get them from. Actually, I think they are the only ones anymore. Century doesn't make them anymore and ORF's are crap if they still have them. Some other guy made good ones, but he's in club fed for making FA stuff.......
edit....
Also, G&A board has some of the dealer links too. I may have got in contact w/ Harlan from there......

http://www.gunpartsguy.com has kits, but they run at about $400 each. That's with everything other than the receiver, and including your 922r compliance parts.
I hear rumors that DSA has a few StG-58 kits sitting around, but those are rumors only. If I were looking to build one, and weren't wedded to wanting a Rhodesian, that's what I'd do.
Ohio Rapid Fire claims that they have metric receivers in production now, but I don't know how available they are.
http://www.falfiles.com know a lot more about FAL's than I do.
I have the AGI video and a SA/Rhodesian kit, just waiting on a receiver, and I live in Adams Cty. If you'd like to borrow the video, I just need it back sooner or later.
imbel kits are pretty cheap now, even now that the frenzy this summer at $150 kits has died down.
ORF has not made anything yet for FALs though are working on it. either they are tuning their CNC code or have gone on to other things. receivers are the missing link right now.
I'll help you barrel a receiver and determine the LS size in NoCo if anyone wants. If you don't mind tooling made out of wood... :)
Forgot to post the link. Interordinance has them for $199.

Anyone wanting to get a metric receiver needs to get on DSA's waiting list ASAP. The list is growing......
One thing I forgot to mention was gun shows. There still may be people with metric receivers laying on their tables. The Century ones are supposed to be ok, but nowhere near as good as a DSA. I'm going to the next one and see what I can dig up in compliance parts and receivers. If I can find any extra ones, I'll post some up on the FS board. Assuming I'm actually in the state for it.
If you get sick of trying to build one for what I figure is going to be $600 ttl, you can go buy one from the guy at 5280 Armory. He had some come in that I think he was selling in the $700 range. If it goes much past May 07 waiting for the receiver, I'm going to buy a comlete rifle.
These are such a pain compared to other kits I'm trying to build, I cancelled my order for the parts because of it.......
ORF has a signup list for their second batch of type III 100% receivers. The first batch are shipping now. I was told it will be another three weeks before batch 2 is done.
GET ON THE LIST FAST IF YOU WANT ONE!!!!!!
where did you hear they are shipping?
Sorry Merl, been wayyyyy to busy lately. Just got back from KS on Tues.
I talked to the girl at ORF, she said the first batch was done and he was going to start making the second batch in 3 weeks. Now, I don't really belive the second batch would be built then. It's been 3 weeks....
I have to call them again today, I'll check with her and try to pin her down on some "terminology".

UPDATE 1/9/07 I talked to ORF again on Friday and they never finished the first batch. There was a problem and he had to stop making them. The girl now says she "thinks" he will start back in a couple months....
FYI
Inter Ordnance has NEW US made FAL metric stock sets for $35.00.
Think 922r compliance parts count....... Front hand guard, pistol grip and stock.
