View Full Version : News blackout?

I'm wondering if anyone else has been noticing this in the greater Denver area.

Last night I heard multiple gunshots -- not fireworks, but a series of small caliber doubletaps -- about 6 blocks away. An hour later I need to drive in that direction and 6th Ave is completely blocked off by about 8 DPD cars, no FD or EMS. Nothing about it in the news today.

About a month ago I heard from a reliable source that there was an armed robbery at a dispensary in Aurora where an employee was wounded and a robber was killed with an AR-15. Police responded. No mention of it in the news. Apparently, there have been a number of armed robberies both inside and outside dispensaries over the past 4 months, nearly all of which have not been reported in the media.

About three months ago a newly opened business in the Capitol Hill area was raided by SWAT with over a dozen emergency vehicles all over the place, and the business closed and never re-opened. No mention of anything in the news.

I can understand minor arrests being unreported due to lack of space, but when a major road is blocked off by police for several hours or when someone is killed during an armed robbery you expect to have some news coverage of that.

I know that in resort towns news blackouts often occur because crime reports frighten away tourists, but Denver isn't exactly a resort town. Any idea what is going on with this? It happens so often around here I'm thinking of getting a scanner.

Make some noise about it!

Shoot Video... or Stills, at the very lease. Contact ALL of the TV Stations and sent 'em that stuff... and keep track of who follows up & who blows it off!

I know that they ALL still live by the axiom "If it bleeds, it leads!"

The cops are GENERALLY tight-lipped and hate having the media... and civilians, for that matter... peeking over their shoulders. Especially so when there is a body count.

BEFORE I GET EVERYONE GIVING ME CRAP ABOUT THE GENERALIZATION, PLEASE REMEMBER THE RECENT DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS RESULTING IN MULTIPLE TERMINATIONS AT THE DPD... EVEN AFTER "INTERNAL INVESTIGATIONS" FOUND NO WRONG-DOING... JUST LIKE OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES IN WASHINGTON BEING IN CHARGE OF REGULATING THEMSELVES, PAYING THEMSELVES & POLICING THEMSELVES... "FOX WATCHING HENHOUSE" ONCE AGAIN, EH? WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE RESULT IS WHEN THAT HAPPENS... [Rant2]

Interesting. Sounds like the area I work in on the weekends. I heard a few things that sounded similar to gun shots, but with all the serious fireworks going on, I didn't pay it too much attention.

Kind of reminds me of what happened a few months ago when I was driving over to a friends house in Lakewood, but they put it in the paper the next day... SWAT closed off an entire block after a gunman had barricaded himself in his house with a possible hostage. Got like a tiny little blurb that barely gave any details and that was it. I agree with cwripinz, bring the story up to the news people. Granted journalists suck in my book (after 4 years with Army Intelligence) but we do have freedom of the press and I can't really go against that... Unless their name is Geraldo Rivera and it involves US Troops.

They can't report the actual news anymore. If the average "sheeple" knew that we lived in a society where predators roam with impunity it would be pandemonium.

Gotta keep the flock docile.............................

[LOL] My old saying as always shines through right there: There is no truth in the news and no news in the truth.

Robbery is one thing, gunfire resulting in injury or death is something else. A few years ago I moved from a city where there were so many robberies they did not report them in the news unless someone died or they got some good camera footage. I find it troubling that shootings with a police response are going unreported here. I'm not sure what to think about that.

With the economy going the way it is Crime is high right now. The media is more focussed on stories such as Linsey Lohan and Casy Anthony and a Weiner from NY.

I've noticed this too.

I drove by what looked to be a shooting at Evans and Quebec a couple nights ago. 8+ squad cars, some going the wrong direction, officers with their guns drawn... then one ambulance headed to the scene. Now when I try and see what actually happened, nothing in the media.
