Last week I took the Combat Focus Shooting course and we had a little talk about the Serpa holster and the possibility of a ND when used improperly. This happened to be the second class that has warned me about the holster. They even had one of their students do the same thing in one of their class. Today I come across this video. The guy should really take a class. This really looks like it hurts. [Wow2]

I have a YouTube channel as well and am quite familiar with Mr. Derek Grebner (or as he refers to himself - "Tex Grebner Outdoors". He's a little to "redneck" for my taste and not subscribed to his channel. A friend of mine directed me to his ND video and I am glad because I hadn't laughed that hard in a long time.

I am NOT a fan of the Blackhawk Serpa holster for that very reason. In fact, the firearms training institute "Armed Response" won't even allow them on their range for this very reason. I am sorry Mr. Grebner shot himself, but if you listen to the beginning of his video, he set himself up for failure. He started training with a 5:11 thumb-drive retention release holster and then transitioned to the Serpa.

I am a big proponent of using simple, but effective holsters and using the same one for all my pistols. For example, I use the Safariland 6379 ALS for everything I own. I have a Kimber Custom TLE RL II, and my lovely wife had bought me a Serpa for it. I used it for some dry-fire practice and didn't care for it (in fact I should put it up for sale on here soon). Once I started seeing several ND articles, mostly with Glocks, I am glad I didn't use the holster. I am a huge fan of passive retention (Raven, Crossbreed, E-HUD, and even certain Fobus holsters aren't terrible if you can't afford anything else). But if you want that extra, easy to manipulate retention holster, I think it's hard to beat the Safariland. [Beer]

I feel like a jerk for laughing, but his reaction was so freakin funny. Anyway, i have a serpa for my 1911, and havent ever had my finger enter the trigger guard on accident. I hadnt thought about it before but now i can see how this might be an issue when im not quite so mindful of safety precautions in a defensive situation. Might start looking for something else.

Bahahahaha! Its a good thing he is professional enough to handle a glock 40... Good thing he left the magazine in the gun too. Genius!

Looks like he broke Rule 2 & 3. Now everyone is blaming the holster.

I like how the SERPa lock positions your index finger safely on the frame and nowhere near the trigger when you disengage it.

So why was his safety off when pulling his pistol?

He does a good job in guessing why he tripped the safety. The problem with the serpa holster is training. If you train with it, it can be a decent holster. You have to keep your finger flat against the release, if you do it indexes your finger flat against the frame as you draw. But what he did is use his finger tip with his finger curled, which ends up more times than not with your finger inside the trigger guard. I think if you run a serpa it should be all you run for that reason.

I dislike them more for their tendency to get dirt and grit in the lock mechanism. If you have your serpa on and go prone, or on your side, depending on where you run it, it can fill up with crap and lock your gun in the holster. I've seen it happen, and the holster had to be broken to get the gun free.

CMP 5.56,

You are absolutely correct about the Serpa & the dirt clogging up the release mechanism part. That is another reason I will be selling mine. I think it's crazy how many "real t.v." law enforcement shows you watch and A LOT of cops are using Serpa holsters. Like I said earlier, I love my Safariland ALS. Take care.

Agreed, CMP. I only run a Serpa with my SIG-Sauer for that reason. Personally, I have to give the guy credit for having the huevos to A. Post this video and B. Admit straight up that it was operator error. And realizing how lucky he was.

ND's happen. I have been to a range twice for very similar (wounds) ND's but both were finger on the trigger while holstering. Both were LE. Most everyone has a "won't happen to me" or "I am a safe gun handler" attitude, just like this guy and the two LE's I ran on years ago. Well yes it can and maybe you are but what about the guy next to you? This guy was very lucky, it wouldn't take much more than some bad karma to have hit the Femoral or Popliteal Artery and for him to be in a world of hurt. Stay Safe!!
