View Full Version : Just moved to Grand Junction, CO from Kansas
Hey all, just moved here for work and love the area! I currently own a XDM9 and a S&W 15-22 with a Daniel Defense DDM4 V3 Middy on order. Already have my CCW from Kansas, which applies to Colorado as well. Looking to learn my way around the area and do some more top tier training in the area. I love mountain biking and guns, so this area is perfect for me. If anyone ever wants to meet up for range days or do some training together I'm usually down for it, but am pretty busy, as I work in the oil industry, so my schedule is pretty packed other then a few days per month. I came from the Kansas CCW forums, and now look to make this my new home!

Welcome!
Your CCW doesn't apply once you move here. You need to apply for a Colorado one.

Right, but I'm still in temporary housing, not a permanent address, so I can keep my KS one until I get a permanent address, at least that is how KS law reads, right now I live in company housing in various locations around the area

Welcome to the forum!
Welcome!!! I'm from the Junction area.
The place to buy a gun (maybe not the best, but the cheapest) is A-Pawn in the 400 block of Pitkin. (Pitkin goes to Palisade and also Pitkin County, Ute goes to Utah).
He possibly sales more guns than any other store in the state...but be prepared to wait. If you don't see it, ASK, he probably has it upstairs.
He doesn't offer any service...to speak of. But, he does mount scopes and will custom order all sorts of stuff (if you need an odd thing ordered, go to Jerry's Outdoor Sports) and his lay-away plan is...one payment a month...that is it, those are the terms (and man have I bought some guns of that plan).
What part of KS? I'll trade the GPS Coordinates on where I've never seen elk, or deer (most everywhere that I've hunted) for the prime KS whitetail locations. ;)
Welcome aboard.

Ha, I'm not really a hunter, more of a competitive shooter and plinker, but I can tell you that most of the big deer, like the deer you rarely ever see but find the huge antler racks while on a hike, all reside on private property, as they usually know where people hunt for them. I am from a 50 acre farm area, huge deer population, about 1 mile away some people own over 200 acres and hunt for deer there, but they won't find the big ones, because our property has them all because we don't hunt them, so I would say get in good with a friend who has some property there that hasn't really hunted on it but doesn't mind if you do, if you want to take down the big ones, that isn't to say you can't find them on occasion, but they are more prevalent on private land where they aren't hunted.
Thanks for the information, I was searching for places to buy guns and stuff on google and saw Jerry's, I usually stray away from pawn shops as they usually have nothing I would want, so it is good to know that that one is good as I probably wouldn't have looked otherwise.

Small town, it's about 35 minutes from Overland Park/Olathe, and about 45min/1 hour from Kansas City. Pretty close to Hillsdale Lake, if you have ever heard of it.
Welcome, this is a great place!

Yes sir,
Lived in Olathe for a long while, and made my way all around the area on both sides of the KS, MO state line.
I used to do a lot of shootin up around DeSoto at the Mill Creek range.

Awesome, I went to school at KU so I had been living in Lawrence for the past 4 years, but I'm glad to be in Colorado, I think I was pretty lucky to end up with this location, definitely my top pick.
Welcome, spent a few years working in the Rangely oil patch.I'm sure you will enjoy western co.[AR15]
That shop that I mentioned is the cheapest place to buy ammo, or anything related to guns, probably in the state.
Jerry's is not bad. It offers service. If you go in there, 2-3 guys will wait on you. They are trying to stay in business by competed w/Cabelas and Sportsman's. It is a small town shop. If you go in there you'll see the owner. Therefore, I try to buy stuff from there.

What shop is the cheapest for ammo?
I just stopped by Jerry's today and ordered my DDM4 V3, cost me about $200 more than the internet, but I would rather feed someones kids and help their shop rather than save the $200 just so some guy can make $15,000,000 this year.
He told me they are having a sale on ammo this weekend, so I am going to see what his prices are, but plan to stock up with 1250 of 9mm and 1250 of 5.56, at the minimum.

A-Pawn, or Jimmy's (as it sometimes referred to...the owner's name) is the cheapest for ammo. He has a brain like a computer as he knows all the prices and locations of his inventory.
Guns are $10 over cost. They also have the biggest selection of used guns in the area.
Don't count on getting in and out of there in 15 minutes though.
And, I was in Olathe just last week...Olathe, CO, home of the Sweet-Corn Festival.
you talking even cheaper than the internet? I just paid $0.27 per round for .223 and $0.20 per round for 9mm luger, both brass cased and reloadable
Probably yes, don't know...how many cases are you going to buy 5? Suppose you buy one case or 5 cases...how much dif is the shipping?
Here is a principle, not actual prices, suppose you can get one case shipped for $10, the next one will be $15 and then the 5th case will be $20. So, you can buy in bulk and get one shipped for $4.
Then, when a person buys 25 cases of ammo in a year...they get a better price than what you can get on the internet.
Dealers can buy .22 and shotgun ammo cheaper at Walmart than what they can get if from their distributor...because Walmart buys 100 truckloads of the stuff a year. (how much cheaper is the shipping on a truckload...a bunch!!!)
So, he may indeed selling a case of ammo cheaper than what you can buy it for...not sure, don't know. But, I guarantee his ammo prices, for a single box, except for some 12 gauge and some .22 loads are cheaper than Walmart. Last year, I bought, something like, 3 boxes of Fusion ammo from him, cheapest price around.
Now, I would expect Jerry to have excellent prices in his big sale. His big sales are pretty decent...and you can get in n out w/in 5 minutes.
Go by and find out...if you don't like it, then you've learned something. My guess, is that you will be pleasantly surprised.
Another thing to factor in...is it on your way? I used to be all about price. I still am, but I have a ton more responsibility and it is worth it, to me, to stop and buy it at a place that is on my way.
