View Full Version : Building a National Match AR
I have a Colt Sporter HBAR that I would like to build up to a National Match rifle. Anyone have any experience with front/rear sights, triggers, etc that they could share?
thanks

Welcome to the forum
For a true NM rifle I believe the rear sight is in 1/4 minute graduations and the front is a narrower post. The trigger setup is up to you and if you are competition shooting you may be limited to what you can use. Jard, Giessel, J&P and such are all good pieces and if cash is tight Rock River's offering is not too bad. I can clean up a stock trigger to a crisp single stage as well. If you can find a take off NM forend that retains the stock handguards that will make the barrel a freefloat and still appear stock.
More importantly than the parts used is how they are assembled. A true NM build is a precision operation- the face of the receiver is trued, the barrel is recrowned, the front sight base is altered to use setscrews as opposed to pins, frequently the barrel extension is Loctited or JB welded to the receiver, bolts are swapped around until one offers optimum headspace, the lower is drilled for a setscrew ala POF to remove play between the upper and lower and a few other lil tricks.
If you are not comfortable with the build PM me.
We can get a tackdriver built for you!
Buy a cle or white oak upper, add a good trigger and some weight to the stock.
Sights may be 1/2 or 1/4 moa and the rear sight will have aperture options.
I will pm you a good site to look for that sort of thing but they do pop up here every now and then.
both of what is said above is good advice!
My rifle is Armerlite NM but a lot has been done to it and its on its second barrel pretty much custom for me weighs around 16 pounds.
i would say have white oak or CLE(Compass lake Engineering) build you an upper! would be a very good start if you where looking to get into some high power shooting/ CMP rifle matches! Or BP could help you build one from the Ground up either way would be good start!
im headed to camp perry here in a couple of weeks! [Coffee]
