Went up fishing! The salmon run was pretty weak, we still landed a few, but the halibut fishing was great! Biggest I caught was about 60 lbs, the other was just under 40. One guy on our boat caught a 90lb and another guy got a 200 lb halibut! monster fish!
Saw 23 moose while driving, very unnerving!
Went on a deep hike about 2.3 miles in and saw 5 different brown bear (grizzly) along the river while we were fishing. they didn't pay us much attention for the most part though.
also caught a few sharks, some cod, polluck, flounder, and there was another kind of fish that looked like a stingray that one person caught (probably close to 200 lbs the captain said but they let it go and said it was a junk fish)
The super ugly fish with the knife in the head was a skulpin and we used it for bait!
now for the pics!

Thanks for sharing. I have family in AK and was actually born up there, but don’t remember a dang thing about it. I hope I get to go up sometime and do some fly fishing.

Thanks

Grizzly's scare the hell outta me. If you're close enough to catch them with you're camera, you're f'ing crazy. Great pics!

It was a bit crazy, but having a .44 mag on the hip gave me a bit more confidence.
One large male got within about 10 yards of a guy and his family as they weren't prepared to move and had all their gear out so he had to shoot in the water in front of the bear. shocked a few of us around there but that bear really wanted to get to that spot. bear bolted across the river and then headed up into the trees.

We had a family walk out with us as they weren't armed and were pretty scared of the bears so we offered to walk back with them.

Down in homer I was amazed at the number of RVs and the number of guys on BMW motorcycles (dual purpose looking) on road trips. very big tourist spot.

The other thing that really threw me off was the light. 1am looked like 7:30-8 around here. sun down but lots of light around and more than enough to walk without a flashlight. It really never got "dark". pretty crazy!

Ak is awesome, hunting isn't sporting the deer come up to check you out. Bears at the dump are free trophies and the fishing blows my mind I had one day a few years back on kodiak where I got my 2 blacktails after limiting on kings silvers and halibut and more cod then we could eat.

Thanks for the pics and the stories... Homer is cool, and a bit "different" something about a town that's built on a glacial spit that's odd- but much of Alaska is their own local kind of odd. [Beer]

I tell this to people all the time, but it doesn't sink in until they have to put foil on the windows to be able to sleep when they're up there [ROFL1]

And yes, the fishing is awesome- my mother caught one of those rays on one trip... and a shark another...
when you see the bears when Salmon are running, they're mostly pre-occupied, but if they want your spot- well, you saw it...

you can go fishing anywhere... But you go to Alaska?

If I went to Alaska, I sure as shit wouldn't be fishing!
Bullwinkle would have a bad day [AR15]

it was a ruger blackhawk. not mine, but I have one just like it brand new in the box here at home. If I go again, I will take my taurus tracker 4". little lighter and more compact but still has the .44mag punch

just had some oysters was all. we mostly ate halibut and salmon while we we there, other than sandwiches we made for lunches when out from the house or muffins for breakfast.
