I was listening to Michael Brown on KOA last night. A lady newsreader told him that the Intersection of I-25 and I-70 is no longer called the Mousetrap. She claimed that when they rebuilt it the name became obsolete and improper. She stated unequivocally that the Mousetrap no longer exists.

I think she is full of it. It's still the Mousetrap to me.

[LOL] Awesome, that works very well.
I've lived in Colorado for 22 of my 26 years on this earth and have never known I-70/25 to be anything but the Mousetrap... although I haven't heard it called that in a while (mainly because I don't listen to the radio). I think no one calls it the mousetrap anymore because after TREX (Delfuego put it best) it's very streamlined now.

I've always called it the mousetrap when iit really was the truck tipping mess. I was living in Arvada and working in the Tech Center (a much smaller Tech Center) when the truck full of torpedoes tipped over. That was pretty amazing how it shut the city down.

i always thought mousetrap was about as stupid a name as could be put on an interchange. plus, "the narrows" and the jackass on KOA that calls 225 "two and a quarter."

just cutesy crap that isn't helpful. imagine coming through town and some idiot on the radio says "wreck at the mousetrap"--how is that helpful if you're passing through?

It was always the Mousetrap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mousetrap_%28Denver%29) back in the days when there was the traffic control tower there (it was never actually used by the State Patrol). Then they rebuilt it to be "less confusing" (???) in the 80s. Once again, it is a major choke point, and idjits will cut across 6 lanes of traffic, only to find they took the wrong exit and cut across the gore point and cut more people off...

Late 84, early '85..

I was "out of town". My Mother sent the news clipping. Passed it around the barracks. We had a good laugh about it.

It was the "Mousetrap" back in 1980 when I first got to Denver. of course we had "Bronco Bricks" as well.

I do remember my first time through it at 4pm....... Ah, now I get it. [Coffee]

And it will always be the "Mousetrap" to me.[Mad]

1984
I remember that day very well, I was driving a tow truck at the time and was the second truck to the scene. Nobody knew at first what it was until a Fire Chief was able to contact the shipper. Once it was known what it was everybody scattered like ants on a hot plate.
IIRC it took about 12 hours to get the fish loaded up on another truck. We then spent about another 4 righting the truck/trailer and getting it out of there. A lot of people don't realize that mishap and a chlorine leak in the rail yard @ 48th and Fox were very instrumental in today's Haz-Mat regulations.
I am native here and believe it or not before they reworked the interchange in '68 or so it was known as "Malfunction Junction". After it was reworked and they built the Traffic Tower there it was known as the "Mousetrap".
They started to redo it in 86 or 87 to its current configuration.
There used to be a second Traffic Tower although much smaller at Denver's "second Mousetrap": 6th Ave and I-25.

TREX was a "Clusterfuckasaurus" and guess what, before too much longer (a couple years) they are going to start on the second phase of TREX, Broadway to 6th Ave. That is why they are redoing the bridge at Alameda.
I can't wait......

How bout we just pave over Denver? That'd solve our traffic issues, and a dozen or so other "issues" that come to mind.

Never heard it called the Mousetrap though... then again I'm a youngin compared to you old guys [Coffee]

Respect your elders!!! Damn kids on the lawn!!![Rant1]

If you ever want a good scare:

Stop and go look at the underside of the Broadway/Sante Fe/I-25 Bridge.
I was rated the most dangerous and decayed bridge in the state. (4+ years ago!). You will likely never drive over it again.

Ironically, funds were allocated for its' repair/expansion during the TREX build-out. But that money was spent on other things. Then the CDOT head tried to use it as a threat to allocate more dough they could squander[Roll1]

BTW: we should name that Clusterf**k interchange too!

Talked to my friend the other day (57 year native of Colorado- seen almost everything from the opening of the Eisenhower tunnel to all the major re-do's on the roads in/around Denver) and he came up with a list that only some of the older CO folks would know:
You've been in Colorado a long time when:
-Red Rocks used to be avoided like the plague when the Dead came to town (unless you wanted some good drugs)
-Same as above, except replace Red Rocks with Chief Hosa.
-It took 10 minutes to get from Colorado & Colfax to 6th & Sheridan.
-I-25 was relatively navigable mid-day to rush hour.
-McNick... nuff said.
-You remember when the Broncos first got a young QB named Elway.
-One of the highest points scorers on the Nuggests was named Dekimbe.
-That big french fry looking thing...
-There were miles of almost nothing between Denver and Castle Rock, then between Castle Rock and CO Spgs.
-The Colorado Rockies played hockey.
-Lift lines at the major resorts took maybe 3 min.
-We imported more cars from Detroit than people from California.
-Denver PD was a respectable organization and the ones you wanted to call for help.
-"South Park" was on the way to Buena Vista.
-Your senator was named "Nighthorse."

Personally (I know I'll offend somebody), but I really don't care what new people to Colorado think about what we've called some of our landmarks nor do I feel the need to be sensitive to their confusion. Go back to your old place if you don't like it...!

Ouch! Sorry but it appears some of that money was used to build two nice new bridges on I-25 down in Trinidad. Many thanks for that as I believe normally Trinidad is considered the asshole or at least the arm pit of Colorado so it's damn unusual for ANY money to trickle down to us. Thanks again - we do appreciate the very thoughtful but unusual gesture!![Tooth]

My grandfather was an engineer for CDOT (it was called something else back then) who worked on the I-70 Glenwood Canyon and Eisenhower Tunnel projects. I've been down that stretch of I-70 a few years ago, it's like the highway flies over the smaller road near the river right?

Most of the original road is gone. There are some places that still exist as an access road.
