My [Censor] cell phone that I have loved up until about a week ago is going to drive me nuts!!! It's worked great since I got it, but now that I'm almost ready for an upgrade, the darn thing has been shutting down on its own - sometimes it comes back on by itself, and others I have to turn it back on, and then today my email stopped working - that only took two hours and a total reset/erasure of the phone to get corrected. My wife's phone is also starting to act up, although it's been a little tempermental for a while. It's almost like there is some kind of "upgrade" for the phones that you automatically get when you're closing in on an upgrade date that makes your phone act up so you want to spend money on a new one. Is it a blackberry? I've had many, great until they pull that. Then there's nothing to do but get a new one. Sometimes 6 months, sometimes a year and a half.

Nope, a DroidX. I'm looking forward to spending another couple hundred and renewing my contract for another two years when I have to replace it, and I'm really starting to miss the days of a cell phone being a phone and nothing else.

Exactly! I have a Samsung something-or-other. Nice, mid-sized flip phone. It does have a decent camera. Other than that it's got capabilities that I just don't care about. I just want a damn phone.

I had a Droid and hated it.

The reason most folks have a problem with the droids is because the carriers put on so much bloatwear that it causes the phones to work like crap. My advice to anyone with a Droid is to root the phone, and find a rom that you like. The phone performance is pretty amazing after that.

Should also put the standard disclaimer. *I am not responsible if you turn your phone into a paper weight*

As it sits I am currently running cyanogenmod 7 and love it. This week anyways. Pulled a quadrant score of 2500 when I first installed it.

I've got a Droid X now and I'm just waiting for it to start pulling that crap. I'm going to have to think long and hard about staying with a smartphone or getting a feature phone for the decreased complication and cost.

I do love my phone though.

Its called Planned Obsolescence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence).

I used to work with a guy that was a CAD designer. Many years ago he worked for a company that manufactured railroad train cars. One of his major projects was to do computer design studies and testing on the design of their heavy flatbed cars so design them to where they would fall apart at a specific mileage. The warranty ended 500 miles before this specific mileage point.

Thing is their customers knew the train cars were designed this way (they didn't care because it got the cost down ... and I guess in the railroad industry its all about $X per mile for Y miles and they scrap the cars at Y miles regardless of condition anyway ... probably due to government safety rules).

I expect this happens in a lot more industries.

I retired from a major RR after 34 years of service. Although I had NEVER heard of that being done, I wouldn't doubt it too much - especially if it kept the cost of the new equipment way down.
Of course there is still a major safety issue involved if that really did occur. IMHO

and yes it does bear worth repeating:
I Do not know of any manufacturer that will not void your warranty if you alter the phone outside of their "acceptable use."

acceptable use is normally acceptable applications and software or firmware patches.

Thanks Byte!!! Unfortunately, the geek talk actually made sense to me before the translation - maybe I need to invest in a pocket protector to keep my phone in and some black glasse with tape on the bridge. [ROFL2]

I have a 3 or 4 year old RAZR, it works just fine thank you very much. I don't need all that crap they hang on a crackberry or droid or whatever is the current electronic flavor of the month.

Yep,
My RAZR is so old that I need to charge it everyday if I make more than 2-3 calls on it.

I have an HTC Hero (Droid) that began restarting itself, shutting down, generally not working. Sprint tried to reset it, but that didn't work. I was still about 8 months from being able to upgrade, and I hadn't gotten the insurance they try to sell you, so I figured I was screwed and would have to pony up for a new phone at full price (and yes, I need a smart phone for work). Sprint was great. They ordered a replacement overnight and only charged me $35. Pleasantly surprised.

I have a Blackberry that is going to the range as soon as I get a new one. I will find some kind of creative way to destroy it since it has been nothing but a pain in my a$$ since it was new.

Been having similar issues with my HTC Incredible lately, so I finally broke down and rooted it last night. 100% worth it. It's running faster than when I got it, and battery life went way up
