16 months and finally got a job. Granted it's part time but it's a job. I was kinda surprised it took 3 interviews though for part time. I guess that shows how tough the market is.
10 months to go for full SS benefit and this is what I needed to supplement that when I get there.
Those of you that have been working-stay with it. It's a complete employer market right now and tough. [Beer]

Good for you! I spent over 9 months unemployed looking for a job... veterans preference my ass! Finally my dad hired me, but only P/T... it sucks but a job is a job and you gotta feel good about being gainfully (Hopefully) employed.

I don't think Veteran's Preference has even come up during my job hunt !! One guy even asked me how I got Honorable Discharge plates on my truck [ROFL1]
I had no idea how to respond to that [Beer]

I hear the oil fields are hiring. May have to move for the work, or at least commute but the pay is pretty decent from what I hear.

Nice, congrats! Coming out of college with a Bachelor's Degree and after literally hundreds of applications turned in, probably over 50 interviews, SOME money coming in was better than none, so I took a job as a cook at BWW. That was a major hit to my pride, but a job's a job. I needed something. Thankfully I have a great job now, it's been a blessing.

I guess I was just stunned at the question-thought the plate said it all.

Thanks guys-Some days the only way I kept my sanity was signing on here. [Beer]

Congratulations!

It is really hard to find a job that pays similar to 2007 wages.
There are still people out there RIGHT NOW who are looking for 1999-2000 wages during peak of dot.com era. I guess I am one of them. hehehehe

Congrats!

Ya and those employers who know that and treat the employees like crap are going to be training new employees when the market picks up. I have actually been seeing a lot more jobs open lately. My wife just scored a job makeing what I make, just saying [Beer] A good part time job I enjoy would make it worth quiting a full time job that I cant stand.

Know any programming languages? UNIX sysadmin? Sillyvalley is running out of talent and recruiters are looking for telecommuters. Never heard of preferential treatment for vets, most companies just want someone who can get things done right and on time, pretty much everything else is secondary.

No and only mildly Linux systems admin

and if I can help it I would rather not move to Cali.
IF I have to move, I am going onto the reservation.

Unix is not hard. Linux is not that hard either. Just pick up a book on BASH commands or what ever language they are using and go.

A lot of the sysadmin work I'm seeing now is hybridized, they want someone who is both a sysadmin and a programmer, so that they can do what I'm doing -- setup systems to be programatically deployed. I can type a single command and ten minutes later a new server instance is running and configured, all the unix software and codebase for the websites are deployed and switched on. Neat stuff.

Have you been doing anything to up your skills while unemployed? Ruby on Rails appears to be a decent language with a number of job positions open. Amazon EC2 is giving away free compute time on their Micro sized instances. A great way to learn UNIX is by using it in a cloud environment.

I wouldn't move to CA either, cost of living+laws+taxes=suck. There was a sysadmin/support job in SFO at my employers, but they filled it with a Muslim from Dallas. I told him that Zundg says even the nice ones try to kill you eventually. The response was a snortle.

I Agree, Linux and Unix arent difficult.

"Do you have 5 or more years of Linux Cloud environment engineering experience?"
...No

"We have decided to pursue better qualified applicants"

you are correct about the hybridization.

Friend of mine is a Network and Satellite telecommunications engineer.
he is going to college to learn Microsoft, Linux, pearl and SQL because he also has to be the Sys admin, Helpdesk and the programmer when they fire the guy doing it now.
He's working 14 hours a day now, he says he expects to start sliding backwards within 4 weeks.

cutting from the bottom is never a good idea.

you know what you get when you hire a jack of all trades?

UNIX (and variants, I use the term interchangeably... POSIX compliant operating system would be the correct term) -- they're like shooting, not hard to do, but takes practice and patience to do well. It is an order of magnitude easier today than it use to be. You use to have to compile everything by hand.

There aren't a lot of people with 5 years of cloud experience, as it's a fairly new to see mainstreamed. I think my oldest Amazon code is S3 stuff from 2006.

A jack of all trades, I find it's more a matter of eveyone having a skill level for each particular craft. For example, my web programming, database, html, javascript values might be 8, unix system admin 6, and networking 4.

Anyway, it can't hurt to play with those things for free, so at least you can chat about them with a recruiter.
