I tend to keep a revolver in the "map pocket" of my car-door, regardless of whether I've also got my Springfield Micro Compact .45 ACP concealed.

Honestly, I'd been questioning my specific choice of "car gun" before this little adventure with the jerk from Nevada, but now even more so.

Any thoughts on specific models / configurations / calibers? If nothing else, its an excuse for another gun (after I get that blinker fixed..).

:P

I'm especially fond of revolvers for this sort of application.

Stainless steel is a good-thing.

I'm really drawn to .44 Special caliber, but I can't exactly explain why.

I like S&W stuff a lot, but it tends to be a little more pricey -- so I'm leaning more toward a Taurus or Ruger or something. But honestly $100 difference isn't going to make-or-break me.

I've often read you can pretty much EXPECT your car-gun to be stolen, so I'm not inclined to spend big-bucks or opt for exotic materials.

Doesn't have to be light. In fact, probably the heavier the better.

I would go for something in stainless steel.

The Taurus 608 sort of stands-out as the heaviest and 8-rounds.

When it really comes down to it, the ONLY autoloader I would trust my life to is a Glock, and since I don't own one anymore... I carry a Taurus 651 Protector (5-shot .357 J-frame - shrouded hammer) on my person, and a Taurus 608 (8-shot .357 magnum - stainless steel - 4" barrel, ported ) in my car. I can absolutely attest to the quality of both, having put several hundred rounds through flawlessly. The 608 is getting a little harder to find these days, Taurus having discontinued the model. Taurus used to have a somewhat risky reputation way back in the day, but their recent offerings over the past 5 years have been pretty much rock solid. (Except for one of their Millenium Pro autoloaders... I forget which one.) Especially their revolvers. I've shot just about every major manufacturer revolver out there at some point or another, and I find Taurus to be every bit as reliable and sturdy as say S&W, or Colt. Granted, they don't have as many bells and whistles, but as far as a knock-around car gun, you couldn't do better than a 608. Eight shots of .357 ought to do the job properly!

This is what I have between the seat and console in my truck when I'm on the road. S&W 357 Mag. Mountain Lite / Scandium Revolver 7-Shot The Titanium & Scandium revolvers are unbelieveably light in weight and packs one hell of a punch. This is my choice of carry in the woods while hunting and backpacking. One of my biggest problems is I'm constanstly checking my hip because it's so light you hardly know it's there. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Tedwantsthemdead/357MagMountainLite.jpg

OK, I'll come clean and admit my current "car gun" is a S&W 357 PD.

Just a joy to carry and plenty of power.

But its hard to control, and frankly too expensive to be relegated to car-duty.

I've got a S&W Model 629 Mountain Gun (.44 Mag) that's just gorgeous and a real joy to shoot with .44 Specials, but again I hate to make it my car-gun.

I'm kinda thinking something CHEAP, that I wouldn't have any heartache about losing.

Any thoughts on the Springfield XD? 9mm? .40 S&W?

I'd go 40 Super & Wicked over the 9mm.

(time was you wouldn't get me saying anything other than .45...now I have a .40 (Beretta 96G) that I use for 3 gun)

I've got a Springfield Mil-Spec .38 Super I bought on clearance at Specialty Sports & Supply for $399 a few years ago.

It'd actually make a pretty good "car gun", except that they're awfully hard to find these days (can't be replaced) and I actually do use it on occasion for IDPA (ESP).

I do have a Springfield "loaded" stainless in .40 S&W. I shot Limited-10 with it for a couple years before I bought an STI for Limited (IPSC).

It probably wouldn't be a bad choice. I've never actually tried shooting anything other than major-PF FMJ's, loaded-long through it though.

As I sit here thinking about it, it occurs to me that my CZ75B might be a good choice.

It was my first 9mm (after I discovered how expensive .45 ACP was to shoot) but now it sits mostly unused.

Not too expensive. Easy to replace.

I carry my S&W 340PD on my hip and my S&W 38 Airweight is now in the car safe. I can have it as my backup when needed on my ankle, or in the carsafe. That way I use the same ammo and same speedloaders too. Karl.

Night sights would be a nice touch too...

You know, I just never even thought about nighttime.

I guess I just don't drive at night very much at all.

I'm sort of thinking an XD, Service Model (4") in .40 S&W, with a light.

Although that would actually cost more than this car did...
