View Full Version : arrrgggg , what the F*CK!!!!!
no more regular range clean up for south site .
was told by a shooter not to worry about cleaning up cause someone is cleaning up on the regular , really wtf !
guy pulling out of lane 1 as i pull up
me : good morning , are you guys done ??(it being 830)
them : yeah we just found out about this place so we just stopped by to pop off a few rounds .
me: right on ,a buddy turned me on to this spot ,how did you find this place
them : some colorado shooting site
me : ill have to check it out . say are those your targets ?(plastic bottles )
them : yeah , i would not worry about cleaning up too much , there is a guy that comes and picks up trash .
me : really ? well ill keep that in mind , see you later (had to walk away to keep from going ape shit)
they leave and i look around and the place is thrashed and then i see 2 old hippies digging up lead and pickin up brass . so i go over strike up a conversation . turns out they are squatters and have been kicked out of many shooting spots . had to walk away again for a second time in one morning .
next i go in the way back do some shootin to clear my head and come across a huge pile of computers and the like . fill up the jeep and get to the shooting . ok now i feel better , maybe ill rake up some lanes in the main area . so im headed back and am greeted buy a big naked ass taking a dump right next to a shooting lane !!
sorry to let you fine folks down , but its cost me around 30 bucks to get to south site and im just not gonna pay and drive 2 hours each way anymore to be shit on. today was the straw that broke alxone's back .
does this mean that im gonna stop cleaning ranges 3 days a week ? no , but i will not be making it public anymore and im probably gonna be stingy with my ammo for a while .
again sorry to let you folks down

Did you at least rub the guy's nose in it?! That's F'n disgraceful. Sorry about your experience man.
the worst part is up until today i thought i was doing something good , turns out i just gave people more room to be slobs . im the dumb ass or at least i feel like one
WTF!? That is complete BS! I would stop as well and see how they like it when the State shuts it down after it begins to resemble a landfill.

Sorry, but I would have let the first guy have a piece of my mind. Something along the lines of "Hey asshole - that's me and you're fucked up for thinking that way."
I guess this comes under the heading of "No good deed goes unpunished".

i would have but the potential for things going real south was high for me at that moment and i dont need any legal hassles .
but you are correct and this is yet another lesson on how fuck people can be .
oh the hippies filled me in that they were a part of the rampart closing !
my frustration is so damn high right now over all this [Mad]
Do you mind if I ask where this is?
Why do you think I got so disillusioned doing it.

I am confused..... You catch some dead beats being dead beats but don't say anything to them. But then expect them to magically know what they are doing wrong and change their habits????
I don't mean to bust your balls, but expecting people to change their habits by NOT pointing out their bad habits or beating around the bush isn't going to work.
If you find someone being a dead beat, call them out on it right then and there. You don't have to be confrontational about it, simply state the facts in a calm professional manner. If you do that, the people that are willing to change will change. But keep in mind that people who choose to be dead beats will be just that.
As much time and money you have spent trying to keep that place clean you could have paid for a membership to a private range. Maybe its time to invest in a private range membership so you don't have to deal with the dead beats?
Forgive me for my ignorance, I don't know where that is. I am also looking for some nice places to shoot that are free.
But if I may, let me read between the lines here. I think the hippie guy did that on purpose. He most likely does not like guns and figured if he can drive off the shooters, that he would be helping the environment. One dump will go a long way for that.
Now do I think you can reason with him? No clue... About the only thing you could do is call the cops. But even then, I am not sure how he broke the law, but he may have.
Alxone.... I also think you did the right thing. While I think it may have been a good idea to tell those guys to clean up their crap. I am not you. If you yourself feel that you may have lost your temper and put your own freedom at risk by starting a fight, then the best course of action is what you did. In the end, your own life is more important and you have to make that decision. Be thankful for your own rationality. Perhaps if you did not feel you were prone to that you could have talked to them or the hippie. But you do what you think is best.

im not talking about young hippies at all they are old .these guys have been at it for almost 20 years and have been kicked out of more than one place . what do you say to someone who already knows that they are a fuck up? on some level id rather them hiding in parks and leaching off the shooting community than begging on a street corner or taking up space time and money in the justice system .

and yes i know myself very well and walking away is the best thing for me .
Why do you think I got so disillusioned doing it.
i now see why there is no clean up section on the forum . the best we can do is pick up more than we bring in and hope others do the same .

I know why we dont just "hope others do the same."
Left-Hand Canyon.
Its a fucking shame that people expect others to clean up after them.
well I guess after all of the open sites get shut down the shitheads can go pay at a public pay-range.
i now see why there is no clean up section on the forum . the best we can do is pick up more than we bring in and hope others do the same .
I don't think there needs to be a clean up section. Most I know on here when they go shoot clean up after themselves and usually take more out than they brought in. I understand your concerns and all, and don't take this as a personal attack, but it just appears to me, through simple observation, that you can get a little obsessive over the whole "clean up the ranges campaign." I too would be very pissed at this situation, but hate to be the one to tell you, there are d-bags and a-holes out there, it's just the way it is... best we can do is try to logically and rationally educate people when we use our public land for our favorite sport and pastime.

man I hate to break this to you... left hand canyon is closed for this very reason.
trash, damage and human waste...
and its not getting any better.

yes you are correct , but i was trying to educate by example . there have been plenty of days when no forum members show up but random people jump in only because they see someone else doing it . on a whole south site is a cleaner place and not just from my efforts . left hand is still a toilet .i might be a bit over zealous about trying to include folks but hey , you cant get people involved by not being excited about it. dont worry ill go back to keeping it to myself .you wont have to read it any more and the visitors to the forum who would not normally get involved can stay uninvolved .
The best we can all do is lead by example and scold those who don't live up to the standards.

I wasn't saying for you to stop- I agree with you that your range clean up thread should be sticky for those interested in meeting up. I would love to get involved but my job gets in the way (and distance wise I'd love to just help out at Squaw) for mid-week days. I would love to go shoot with some of you guys and clean up at Squaw, but it would have to be a weekend... I hate people who trash places and out of the 5 people I ask nicely to bring out more than they brought in I get ignored by 4. But we can still try.
I wasn't trying to silence you at all, I think it's important to try to keep these places nice, not just so they don't shut them down, but also because it's hazardous to the environment. I'll gladly donate my time and brass to the cause, but can't do it during weekdays.

Don't get me wrong, I do commend you for doing it. Just after a couple of incidents, I'll pick up what I left and maybe a bit more. But, that's it.
I have given up on trying to get others to do it.
Sadly, you're trying to piss on a forest fire. I fully support what you are doing but there are too many assholes fighting against us. I'm not talking about tree huggers, grouchy neighbors and the FS. I'm talking about the morons who trash the land, don't clean up after themselves and generally give shooting/off-roading a bad name.
There are still people who are trying to help. Take a look at the range clean up thread for some upcoming events.
I'd hate to see what you are doing go away because of a couple of bad encounters. Truth is that's everyday in the mountains. Guess ya gotta start somewhere.

Bummer... People are so fucking stupid some times. You are trying to solve a problem, and this is the prime reason all the outdoor ranges are being closed. I would not have abeen as cool as you and I kinda wish the hippie had set up camp down range...
Still proud of you alxone. But no good deed go unpunished...

we met a family of shooters last week that was really nice and helped clean up. They had heard about the Squaw pass site from this very forum.
They were good people.
Sadly Al met some ass-mokeys that also read the forum.
some of us forget that its not only the forum members that we joke, bash and banter with everyday that read this.

That is total BS!!! I wish I could say that I can't believe someone would do that, but sadly it doesn't surprise me. I've asked several people at the south site if they were going to clean up after themselves and some of them do so (I think just out of the guilt of being caught) and others just blow me off. I hate the fact that there are so many of us that always take out more than we brought in and that there are still more people out there that leave more than we can take. I for one appreciate what you have been doing out there, but I also understand that these two jack donkeys could have pushed you over the top. I hope that they see this thread and it somehow shows them how wrong they are for what they did, but they probably won't give a rat's rear end!

I grew up in Woodland Park and the family is still there so I'm down at the south site quit a bit. I have been shooting there for a long time and clean up other's trash every time but have never picked up fridges and TVs because I wouldn't know what to do with them once I got them home...Waste Management doesn't like me to leave that shit on the curb.
If you guys can give me a suggestion as to where to dispose of the large trash slobs leave then I'll start picking it up when I'm there too.
One of my favorite sayings that seems to unfortunately be true more often than not, "Every time you do someone a favor you get fkd!"
me: right on ,a buddy turned me on to this spot ,how did you find this place
them : some colorado shooting site
This is the EXACT reason why certain forums need to be blocked to un-registered members. It will weed out some of the riff raff. Some folks just simply will not register just to see where there is some where to shoot and maybe that would have been that ass hat you ran into today.
Sorry all you did was for not, its a damn shame that no matter what you do there will always be someone who doesnt give a fuck.

A month ago, I posted this in the "places to shoot" thread
I don't want to sound like a Scrooge, but I question the wisdom of posting directions to this spot (or other spots) on the forum. In the past, we've been a bit more careful about publicly disclosing our favorite spots. Is there any way that we could have a section on the board that only members can access? That way we can share this kind of info with each other, but still try to preserve and protect our spots, by not inviting irresponsible folks who may ruin it for us all.
I'm saying it again.
I have been never been to the south site but have been to the range in pine junct twice and filled up blackfords truck once and my jimmy the second time. In all honesty I think that the general populous thinks that every where they go someone is going to pick up after them just like in the city. i.e. buildings sporting venues streets etc.

On another gun board I'm on, there are restricted areas even if you are a member of the site. Permission must be granted by the mods to access them. They are still free, just need permission. Maybe this can be done.
Just making a suggestion.

The Ranger station a couple of miles south, heading back to WP has been very friendly in the past in letting us use their dumpster. Plus, if you go and give them a heads up, if the stuff is too big, just get it close to the road, and they'll bring in their big truck to haul it. Oh, if you can get it arranged so that you are still there to help load up there truck, it goes a long way in maintaining their "friendliness."
I like to think that worthless trash don't browse the boards here, but I know that it happens.

the rangers are all about it and yes you are correct , they will let use there dumpster for large stuff . i live downtown denver so i just fill up the dumpsters in my ally . the funny thing is the homeless dumpster diver folks move a little faster on my block
I was gonna say, the dumpster at my shop gets emptied 5 days a week, and the driver is careful to turn a blind eye on some "questionable" items, as long as they aren't too blatant (we've disposed of junk engines this way before). Forum members are welcome to use it, just gimme a heads up so I can be there when you empty your junk into it(neighbors in the building get a little pissy if people fill it with junk without permission, mostly construction trash from the surrounding neighborhood). Note: the shop is near the Jeffco Fairgrounds

Gentlemen, I know all of you are adamant about cleaning up these public ranges, and it is honorable, but you are trying to herd cats in my opinion... It might it be worth considering joining one of the private clubs, IE; Frontier, Sportsmans, etc (I don't know any North ones). All of the negatives I have read about the public ranges on this forum (morons, cleanup, death, etc) are the reasons I stopped going to Rampart many moons ago, and it appears nothing has changed. Just my 2 cents...

I agree about clubs. I've been a member of Be Lomond for a long time. I moved a few years ago and the South Site is probably marginally closer so I usually go there. I can do rifle and pistol without moving berms and Tannerite!
I'll probably be out at the south site Saturday morning to try out a couple of toys I've been working on. I'll pick up what I can but I have a bum knee. I'll be in an old red Tacoma with a camper shell.

a few of the many reasons rampart closed
trash
the shooting of trees
unsafe shooting habits
human waste
squatters
i dont want the restrictions of a private facility or the cost that goes with it. i do understand why some folk like a controlled environment but i like dirt , wind , being able to run and gun , smoking (cigs ) , rapid fire , not being told to wear glasses and ear protection ect.
im just gonna do my best to keep the site closest to my house clean and open .

I always take one or two video cameras with me when I shoot. Primarily I use them to evaluate my performance - as well as document cool shoots - but it is also for me to protect myself if someone were to confront me out in places like that. I'm quite aware that I am one of those "gun nuts" and there are plenty of people that will say or do anything to "prove" that we all deserve to have our guns taken away. It may only be my cell phone but I've generally got tape rolling when I shoot.

If they closed all the areas around here because of squatting, there would be no open public lands. West Magnolia, Ruby Gulch... And talk about trashed...

Those people that want to have our guns taken away- I see them all the time up at Squaw, usually hiking... d-bags, it's really not that great of a hiking trail and they have to deal with shooters. If they don't like it, go elsewhere. Usually I see them and they give me dirty looks but don't confront because I have guns.
Thankfully there aren't any squatters up there (yet?), and when they do come I'll politely ask them to stay out of my way, I don't want any wrongful death suits on my hands.
