Finally got the 20SF to replace the 20, and maybe it's psychological but the grip does feel a lot better in my girly hands. Yes I know that reloading is best, but that just isn't something I have time right now to learn in enough detail to carry with. Plus a 40 S&W conversion barrel should help keep the cost down for range time.

Looking for an all-around compromise round, something for out and about on foot in the mountains and the travel to and from. I don't really want to unload hollow points in favor of hardcast before hitting a trail and then reload before driving back home, unless that is just the best option.

Buffalo Bore and Double Tap have several full power rounds in the high 600 to low 700 ftlb range (Cor Bon has a crap website and Georgia is out of stock all the time), the big thing I'm wondering is if the usual logic on hollow point/2-legged and lead/4-legged remains a firm rule with modern bullet design and full power loads.

And there hasn't been an ammo thread in a while and who doesn't like talking about recoil and flash :)

I would pick whatever load you are comfortable with for the four-legged critters and just use that. If you have a load you are convinced will stop an angry bear or mountain lion I bet it would stop a two-legged critter too.

My opinion, others may disagree.

To the op, I've had simialr questions. I'm new to the 10mm but just worked up a load equalling the Buffalo Bore 180 gr. (chrono tested my load). I tested penetration setting up 4 milk jugs full of water and the 180 gr XTP finally came to rest in the 4th jug of water. Perfect mushroom. The first jug completely blew apart. I was trying to think of a way to test penetration to simulate something like heavy boned animal e.g., bear. I too have read about the hard cast for bear and I am thinking of getting 200gr bullets to work up. Maybe just keep a magazine of each and pick what you need. I'm still trying to find the right do all load, but I don't think it exists, there will be compromises depending on applications. I have also thought of alternating hard cast and XTP.

The challenge is wading through all the internet bs regrading the topic of bears.

Shooting Precision 170gr. "black bullets" for fun and loaded up a hundred 180gr. XTP's with a nice pile of HS6 for carrying. Probably going to an AA7 load for the XTP's

You may like the newer 200gr Nosler offerings from DoubleTap?
I would also try these from DallasReloads. (http://dallasreloads.com/0-10.aspx?$1=1733)

I like speed usually- 135gr DTaps, but in bear/moose country I like the 200gr pills if I have to change their mind about something...

Have fun!
