Frankly IKEA can go fuck themselves. I'm siding with ol' Jake Jabs on this one. IKEA is all foreign manufactured and owned by a company that is a non-profit. They pay no taxes in the United States. They sell mainly to pretentious women like my sister in law. No offense to you guys buying from em it's just not for me. I'm spending my money where I hope it stays here. Once again no offense and hope you find some rocking deals.

Ikea can suck it. I work right across the street in the business park on Yosemite and there were gobs of cops directing traffic this morning and it's not even busy.

Around 25 years ago I bought some IKEA stuff, including bookcases that have been overstuffed since I put them together. They're still not swayback.

When I get a chance I'll go down and visit. In the past, IKEA has carried affordable and interesting kitchen stuff and bed linens. Plus, I love me some lingonberries.

Factual failure. They made the news not long ago because their factory in Virginia is voting on Union stuff, and the IKEA owning subsidiary is against it.

I'm stumped as to why a not-for-profit raises your ire. If they want to build their company as a not for profit, isn't that their business? It's a privately held company, they can do what they want. Would you rather shop at a place that charges you 15% more?

No just no, but FAWK NO! Been driving past there the last couple days and laughing at the losers camped out. Camping out for the opening of a furniture store? Dumbasses. Just went by there and there was a HUGE herd of idiots waiting for the doors to open. For pre-fabricated furniture in boxes that you have to assemble yourself? Bah.

I did a consulting job for afw back in 2001 and most of their stuff is made I'm sweat shop in Vietnam... A "Chinese antique" they sold for 900$ had a west port delivery price of 92$... I think competition is good for business. Ikea hired local people and will bring sales tax to the local economy. Considering that most US based large corporation don't pay tax here anyway... But that's a tax code revision problem...

I want a 69$ chair. The same one is 200$ @Scandinavian design

You have to admit this is great marketing. When I drove by there were 100's of people milling around. It's a store but they're making it seem like a religious event.

I stand quite corrected on the foreign manufacturing. From what I understood and am open for more correction, Jabs in front of a Legislative House committee last year confirmed they pay no corporate taxes due to their non-profit status and a trade agreement we have with the EU. I find that to be BS and if true is enough of a reason I wouldn't shop there. Also my pretentious sis-in-law doesn't help.[Beer]

Ikea: Meh... either their business model will succeed, or it will fail. Not really bothered either way. It would annoy me if the traffic around there interfered with my travels, though.

Fixed.

Yes, the first whatever # get free furniture (livingroom sofas, etc)
the number is in the hundreds

So yeah, I guess if you were part of the estimated 14% of the states actual unemployed and were furniture poor or going to resell it and feed the kids, its a good idea.
Look at it this way, you could even resell the tent you slept in!

Not saying I won't go there, or saying I won't buy anything there. But there's NFW I'm going to camp out waiting for any damn store to open. I camped out in OKC in sub-freezing temps in the winter of 1977 to buy Led Zeppelin tickets, that was enough for me.

Just FYI, only one thing has been printed in more copies than the bible: The IKEA Catalog.
Who works at IKEA? Coloradans. I happen to like IKEA's products, I've only owned one- an entertainment center, but that's because it had to be shipped from a store in CA. I'd shop at the CO IKEA, they have great prices on some cool stuff and the money (partially) goes to the people that work there. I'm helping our local economy. Who cares where the stuff is made, I can't talk on that "Buy American" thing because my car was imported from Germany, my motorcycle from Japan, and probably 60% of all the stuff in my house was manufactured outside this country. The whole buy American thing is BS. Yes I love and support my country, but the food I eat comes from CO, the money I spend on most of the services and products I buy goes back to workers here in CO, and all this talk of "you're not a real American if you don't buy American" is just hogwash.

see "What would you change" thread:

in a perfect country where local businesses, production and labor were protected from cheap labor abroad by tariffs, we could all buy American.
we had to make nice with China.
NAFTA
fair trade this that and the other...
all equated to screwing the American production community right out of a job.

Byte, I agree, but some would make me out to be "evil" because I don't try very hard to make sure every little thing I buy is American. I would love to see our production go up and tariffs go into place making it harder for imported goods, but the problem is, we all want cheap stuff and the best way to go about that is "Made In China"... it's just the way us lazy Americans are now. I'd love to see it changed though, don't get me wrong.

Yep. Free trade could turn us all into serfs. We could get a lot of jobs back here is we were willing to accept living standards of the 3rd world. Life's good for the wealthy who own everything in those countries. Not so hot for everybody else.

All real wealth creation is based on manufacture.... period. Adam Smith Wealth of Nations.

A stick is only worth a little bit. But carve it into an axe handle and you can sell it for 10 times the cost of raw materials or use that handle instead to build a house worth way more.

Importing a premade ax handle allows for the benefit of that wealth creation to stay over seas.

You may think that you can go and find a new job on the micro level on the economy. But on the macro level your are chasing a diminishing pool of worthwhile (Read more than 3rd world wage level) wages. Its cancer capitalism..... Its not sustaining the body (Country) long term, but rather hollowing it out to a shell that will eventually die.

I find it amusing that the construction union is hiring illegal immigrants to hold up their "SHAME ON (insert name here) LABOR DISPUTE" signs downtown.

But back to the original topic, I'm not standing in a line like that for any reason.

It will make you look large since all their furniture is 7/8 scale.

One thing they make well: CFL bulbs. The GE (or Sylvania) ones from Lowes and HD are shit. I've not burned out an Ikea one yet (4+ years on a few of them). I'll never buy CFL bulbs from anywhere else.

Maybe with a Mexi Coke. [Coffee]

I have about six of their mini halogen lights. They work great above the work benches. Even have a couple above the reloading bench. Beyond that, I'm a IKEA newb.

Mexi Coke made with sugar is so much better than what we have in the US, but you need to be careful because a few Mexican Coca-Cola bottling plants switched to corn syrup. I got burned a couple weeks ago because I didn't read the label.

I am not going to get into politics nor local and/or macro econ w/ poltical involvement, but I will take IKEA over AFW anytime.

Thank freakin' god we FINALLY have a competitor over AFW. Still have Ikea products from late 90s, and it is in perfect working cond.

ETA: I am going to IKEA tomorrow. I will save tons of $$$ over some other local furniture dealer. No need to deal with reds.

Thats the one thing I really like about this board, we can all exercise our 1st Amendment right without someone calling another some name... AND alot of the posts have been informative.

My .02....

I think Jake's opposition to IKEA is obvious, its going to impact his sales. I think its funny if Jake uses the argument that all the furniture at IKEA is foreign made, well a large majority of his furniture is also foreign made.

And while Jake does employ alot of coloradoans from what I know from 2 friends that have either worked for him or still do, he's not exactly the most generous boss who doesn't cut corners when it comes to employee benefits. Now I understand, he's in it to make money and people can choose where they work...

As stated in an earlier post, IKEA generated much needed jobs and will increase tax revenue for the county and state.

Personally, having lived in L.A. where there were several IKEAs, I never saw it as a big deal, just another furniture store targeting the contemporary furnishing type of people at a low price. The quality is what you wold expect for what you pay. Not cheapo but not high-end either.

Agreed. That's no different than a leftist, who votes "D", saying he/she supports gun rights.

You cannot possibly support the democrat party and the pro-gun agenda...regardless of your rationalizations.

Back on topic...

I suppose me and the wife will make it down there eventually. I've never been inside an IKEA store or catalog, for that matter.
