I don't know if you noticed, but I haven't been around here much lately. My wife has been in the hospital since August 11th. She wasn't feeling well and we were getting her ready to go to her primary Dr. that Friday morning when she stood up, blacked out, and hit the floor. She broke all 3 bones that make up the left ankle. There have been many complications and we're currently slated for surgery this Wednesday. Her recovery will also not be easy with her pre-existing issues. We could use all the help we can get. [abused]

Thanks!

You'll be in my prayers - I know where you're coming from. My wife is the most important thing in the entire world to me, and I couldn't imagine how I'd feel if she were in that situation. God bless, and may all go well with the operation!

A quick update;

The wife was losing blood somewhere internally while she was on the anti-coagulants given to prevent blood clots. They had to give her 2 units of blood to get her counts back up. She's also experiencing a bit of congestive heart failure. They're giving her Lasix to reduce the fluid around her heart. On the positive side, her kidney function is back to normal. She also looked the best I've seen her since she went into the hospital and she ate well last night. She also slept well and went 9 hours without pain meds. Surgery has been postponed until "maybe" Thurs. or Fri.

Thanks for the support, guys!

The primary care physician says the wife is good to go for surgery. We meet with the new ENT this morning that will be doing the tracheostomy. Surgery is slated for Monday.

Gman
08-28-2006, 23:27
Now they're talking about Thursday morning for the stars to align. Trying to line up an ENT to do the tracheostomy, the orthopaedic surgeon to repair the ankle, and the cardiologist to convert her atrial fibrilation is difficult.

I've got to hand it to the wife. That's a long time to be in a hospital bed with a severely broken ankle.

Oh, brother!

The wife is running a fever today. The Docs think it's an infection in her central line IV. She's on antibiotics and the surgery is cancelled tomorrow. With the holiday weekend coming up, how long will she have to lay there in the hospital?!

After the Dr. bills start rolling in, I don't think I'll be buying guns, ammo, or much of anything for a while. [abused]

Here are some Scriptures that I hope will comfort you. These were read by our Lord Jesus in the Temple. God Bless!

Isaiah 61:1 (NIV) The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion--
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

We've had a few more adventures since the last upate:

The intestinal bleeding has made the wife anemic. The anti-coagulants were discontinued and a 'Greenfield Filter' was inserted into the inferior vena cava that returns blood to the lungs. The filter prevents blood clots from the legs from returning to the lungs and causing a fatal blockage.

The MRSA infection in her blood infected her right eye and was attacking the retina. We had to have a "procedure" done on her eye which involved a transfer to Porter. The nursing staff in the OR at Porter on Labor Day really was a cluster. A 10 minute procedure took 90 minutes and really traumatized the both of us. Mary was transported back to Sky Ridge that evening and she commented that it was nice to be back in her old room (how screwed up is that?).

The bad news is that the ankle is still broken and she's been in bed for over 4 weeks (lots of physical therapy will be required).

The good news is that the vision is quickly returning to her right eye. The MRSA infection in her blood is now cleared up so it's no longer preventing surgery. She will be transferring to University Hospital on Monday where her ENT is able to do the tracheostomy for the ankle surgery.

You can tell I haven't been around here much lately. An update on the situation. Wife has been in the hospital for 6.5 weeks and she's at University now. Tracheostomy is in. She's having other complications that have prevented the ankle from being repaired. I'll be lucky to get her home by Christmas. Between work sucking to high heaven and the wife in the hospital, I haven't had any time for forums, shooting, etc.

PsychoI3oy
09-28-2006, 07:31
You go take care of the important things, the forum and shooting will be here when you get back.

I hope your wife recovers soon, this sounds like way to much effing BS for one person to have to go through.

The hospital called and the wfe wanted me to know that, since I'm going to be there tomorrow, I didn't have to come in to visit today. With that free time, I'm just saying, "Hey!"

Mary still hasn't had the ankle repaired. She's been in hospitals for 8 weeks this past Friday. The emergency procedure on her right eye did indeed save her eye, thank God. She currently has an ulcer on her heel caused by the first splint. The dead tissue was removed and the docs are waiting for the heel to get to the point it will accept a skin graft. They need to make sure she's all sealed up so that we won't have a recurrence of the blood infection with fresh hardware in the reconstructed ankle.

She's being transferred to a long-term care facility tomorrow to get her out of the hospital environment while waiting for the healing process to get her to the point of being ready for the skin graft.

My job sucks to high-heaven right now, but I'm happy to have the health insurance. I'd like to look for something else, but can't risk it right now. Anybody know how to explain the obvious to the ignorant in denial? We have an application stack built around Windows with no ability to go a different route (Siebel requires Windows). Our CIO is pushing Sun Ray thin clients for those interactive Siebel users stating that it will make things better. How does adding 4 more tiers of infrastructure at great expense, huge bandwidth requirements between the thin client and server, and additional latency between the users and their application help anything?

It's the early '80s or 1999 (however you want to look at it) all over again.[abused]

Orthopedics checked out her heel wound today. It's improving, but they won't be able to repair the ankle for 6-8 weeks. She'll probably be in the long term hospital for the rest of the year.[balls]

I got thrown under the bus at work today, too. [train]

Pardon me while I 'self medicate', a.k.a. consuming mass quantities of alcohol. [beer]

The wife was in the best spirits tonight that I've seen in quite some time. She's kind of tickled that she has lost so much weight since she's been in the hospital. She's re-thinking the idea of a gastric bypass. She doesn't want to go back into the hospital once she finally gets out. [approve]

She's getting use to the tracheostomy and breathing easier She can cap it to talk or when she's out and about, so it's not as bad as she thought it would be.

What a day. I got to the hospital at 7am and just got home. The surgery was about 3 hours long and the doctor assures us that everything went well. The wife is in a lot of pain, which is to be expected with this kind of surgery. As pretty much everything else has gone, the nursing facility that Mary left this morning for outpatient surgery said they didn't have a bed for her to return to. University Hospital couldn't admit her since she didn't qualify with the insurance company for inpatient care. University also filed a complaint against the nursing facility with the state board...the ombudsman is supposed to call me in the morning. They were able to find a bed at another acute care hospital and she was transferred there tonight. All parties will have to try and get everything straightened out with the insurance company tomorrow.

My wife and I both thank you all for the support.

G'night!

They've got a better grip on her pain meds today. Mary's out of it, but she's getting some rest off and on.

The facility she's in now is helping us get her into University's rehab program. That would be excellent if they can pull it off.

Finally, some good news! We visited the Orthopaedic surgeon now that it has been 2 weeks since the surgery. They removed the splint and took X-rays. The Dr. is very pleased. Everything is in the right position and is healing well. I got to see the hardware and there's plenty of it. A long plate on the Fibula with 7 screws. A screw into the Tibia and one into the Talus. 2 rods keep the joint from moving and stick out the bottom of the foot. They put a new cast over the lower leg to keep everything protected. Doc says they'll remove the rods in 4 weeks and she'll get to move the foot and start putting some weight on the foot with a flexible brace.

Progress is good! Thanks for the support, gang!

She's home. We both had a bout with a nasty virus last week. Things are very stressful for me right now since she's dependent on me for everything. Fortunately, I got some good drugs from my doctor that help with anxiety. I just don't have much time for the forums right now.

...but thanks for asking!
