View Full Version : Rattle can cammo ideas?

OK. I am thinking about doing some sort of cammo job on one of my ARs. I have watched countless youtube videos of 12 year olds spray painting their airsoft guns but am not sure I can match their skills. Anyone have any tips or tricks to turning out something that looks good? Maybe a link to some instructions? Thanks.

Larry Vickers did it on his show one episode, I dont know if there is a clip that you can watch of that or not, but maybe another option.

Are you wanting like a woodland camo or a digital camo? Foxtrot does some bad azz digital stuff, maybe see if he has any advice for ya.

Good luck and be sure to post up some pics once you do it!

Just looking for some kind of cammo pattern that looks good and is easy to apply. I gave the digital a test run and it is way too involved for me. I just don't have that kind of patience. I do plan on using woodland colors but don't really want a traditional woodland pattern. Maybe something tiger stripe? Maybe something "shadowy"? Maybe something like the ones shown below.

Very cool stuff Ray. I wish I could help you out more but I am not artistic at all. I can spray one solid color if you want help with that.... [ROFL3]

Test your skills out on some cheap lumber, you'd probably surprise yourself. Don't forget that it's not too hard to take the canvas back to blank if you're not happy.

I did a little digital camo practice on an A2 buttstock for practice. That's how I figured out what a time consuming pain that was. Not sure about the lumber idea as I would think it would soak up the paint pretty good and not give me a good representation of what I had done. But, I do have a few pieces of large PVC pipe laying around that might work good for practice. Thanks for the idea.

Do a search over on the Sniper's Hide. There are a number of how-to threads.

Looks like I better figure this painting thing out pretty quick. I think I'll have some time tomorrow to get the rifle painted up. In fact, I think I'll go get some of that blue painters masking tape right now just in case I need it. [Beer]

stay away from krylon. I would use an air cure coating like cerakote. it is the best out there for firearm finishes and you can get everything at homedepot to apply it. It will not stand up to wear as good as the heat cure will but it is rated at a higher temp and not everyone has a gun oven they can cure a gun in either! BTW, Stay away from duracoat. That is another story in itsself. If you need any help give me a shout.

Gonna disagree with you on Krylon.. I've got 5 rifles that I've painted with it. Remember though that I don't consider my weapons show pieces and I'm not trying to win a coolest cammo pattern competition. The intent I have for painting my weapons is generally to create a break up of the rifle lines when you are about 15ft away from it.

The thing I like about Krylon is that there are cammo colors or you can use the flat finish ones. Avero is another kick ass brand. More durable than Krylon and the colors are specifically matched to the military number system. The Avero stuff can be bought in pattern kits from places like MidWay or Brownells.

One of the other things about Krylon and Avero that I like vs. the baked on finishes is that if you scratch it up or want to change it, just pull the can back out an touch it up where you need to.

I'm going to try to get permission to repost an excellent guide written by Pat Rogers. Its what I used to paint my ACR this time around and I am really pleased with the outcome.

This is a pretty simple design. I use my old target backings that are all shot up. Then rip it in half so all the bullet holes are utilized and you get a broken up pattern.

grass, leaves, fine netting (like a fishnet), or even paper cutouts all make great stencils, especially if you overlap them. If you f**k up, just use brake fluid and a few paper towels to strip the paint off.

Painting Your Carbine - from the Book of Pat (http://lightfighter.net/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9046084761/m/143106357).

A word of caution about Lightfighter; Take some time to figure out the personality of the forum and decide whether it's for you before you post. It's not as aggressive as SOCNET but if you start posting outside of your lane you WILL get called on it. Limit yourself to things you have first hand knowledge about and it's a great community.

Another thread there with some great ideas - I Blame Stephen for my Painted Rifle (http://lightfighter.net/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9046084761/m/4871046503/p/1). 30 Pages (and counting) of pictures of people's painted guns.

Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas. I do like the Krylon for the simple fact that it is easy and cheap to touch up and it is also easy to strip completely off should I screw up or just decide I don't like it.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.. I have a few ammo cans i'd like to do a camo job on. I suppose i better practice on something else first but hopefully this thread can give me some ideas.
Seems like finding the pattern is going to be the hard part

For a pattern I'll just put on a base color (tan for instance) and then grab a couple of handfuls of grass or leaves from the yard and scatter them over the gun and apply other colors (green and brown). The whole process takes about 20min.

Here's my buddy's boy shooting one of my rifles.

You could always practice on some ammo cans.... oh, wait... never mind. [Coffee]

Seriously, thanks for the good idea. I have practiced on large pieces of PVC pipe, an old A2 buttstock I had lying around, and a piece of scrap lumber. I never thought of an ammo can. Heck, if it turns out good I could probably sell it for enough to buy another ammo can to practice on. [Beer]

Here's my AR with Krylon paint. I painted it with a base of Tan. Applying several coats with drying in summer sun in between. Then used a small piece of mesh material to do the Green and Brown. Don't dismiss Krylon as an option. It is very durable if you do multiple base coats, I've even soaked it with that nasty Gun Scrubber spray and it still looks new.

DuckTape&550Cord dude that's damn near perfect.. folks tend to go over board and their paint jobs look like some sort of art show. You're cammo is what the concept is supposed to turn out like. Break up the outline and obvious form of the rifle so that from a reasonable distance it doesn't appear to be what it is.

Well Done..

So Ray.. what ya gonna do brother? And hey, if you want and don't mind swinging down to SE Aurora, I'd be happy to help you get your paint goin' .. I've got a ton of Krylon I don't mind sharing and you can get a better look at the 4 that I've got painted. Drop me a PM if you want to set up a time for that.

I used FDE, Olive and Dark brown.

I appreciate the offer. The urge to actually paint one of my rifles has kind of passed since I posted this thread but the more good looking rifles I see here the more I might change my mind. If I do, I might take you up on that offer. Thanks.

I did actually try it. On an A2 buttstock I had laying around. Way too much work for me. Too much masking things off and the painting, and then more masking off, and then more painting. Turned out looking not too good also. But if you give it a try, post up some pictures.

I ripped up a piece of cardboard and gave it some jaged edges like leafs or flame almost. Then I painted the rifle a solid base color the held the cardboard at different angles and sprayed over the gun. It gave it a broken up desert tan pattern that I was looking for. Maybe it will work for you as well?

Ray and Chad .. guys I'll be more than happy to help ya out. I guess all that you really need is to get either the Krylon cammo or flat colors .... or you can order the Aervoe from Brownells, Midway or direct from the manufacturers.

I've lucked out and found most of my cammo Krylon at WalMart especially good supplies this time of year because of the hunting seasons.

Either way guys.. I'm happy to help, the only day next week that I'm already swamped is Wednesday.. I'm even game for Saturday if you've gotten your paint already.

Just PM me when you're thinkin' you'd like to give this a whirl. Here are some steps that will speed up the process..

1. Clean the hell out of the surface that you want painted. Make sure you've removed all oils and grime.

2. Separate the parts you want painted. It's easier to do piece by piece, but there isn't anything wrong with doing whole weapons all at once. You're call.. I've just found it easier to do it in pieces.

3. I don't drink beer much these days, but I'm a huge fan of Cherry Vodka :)

4. Have an idea of what you'd like to do.. examples help a ton. When theskalickys made it here, he was still really torn on a pattern. So we looked at several sites and images and finally settled on the lined / grassy look that you see.

Either way folks, this is pretty easy to do if you take your time, do a little reading, but hey I'm happy to teach and help out.
