FORT IRWIN, Calif. (AP) - Federal officials say more than two dozen firearms have been stolen from a Southern California military base. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says in a statement Friday that 26 AK-74 assault rifles and one Dragunov sniper rifle were stolen from a supply warehouse at Fort Irwin in San Bernardino County on July 15.
ATF spokesman Special Agent Christian Hoffman says arrests have been made and one rifle has been recovered, but the agency is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to more arrests.
Hoffman could not say how many arrests have been made, whether those arrested were military or civilian or what a motive may have been.
He referred those questions to military officials. Messages left late Friday for an Army spokesman were not immediately returned.

No- seeing how "Fast and Furious" has crashed and burned the Feds decided it would just be easier to open the doors on Armories now..............................to ease the "reaquisition" of California by it's original owners.

The good news, such as it is, is that these are most likely OPFOR weapons, so they're set up for blank firing or sim rounds. It would take some work to get them to fire live rounds.

I'd say that depends. A certain Post Near a certain city in CO has 7,62x54r stacked to the roof in a certain ASP.
We had a few at Knox that were real we used for OPFOR.
On this subject anyone remember the VISMODs they used back in the day. NTC used to be fun.

Can't say I do. I went to NTC just after 9/11. I mean literally two months after. The combat arms guys still got all the attention then, and being an MP unit, we really didn't do jack. And you raise a good point, I used to know the Warsaw Pact armorer at this installation you speak of, and at the time at least, they had no shortage of fully functional ComBloc weapons. But this installation does have people who wear green hats and sometimes beards stationed there, that may be a factor. But on the flip side, I'm sure that these people do some training at NTC. Have to consider that one.

the only thing they do for OPFOR weapons of that nature is change the muzzle break to a Blank Fire adapter. It really just screws on and screws off. you wouldnt even need to put on a new one to make it go bang.

Another good point. I don't know if they use that type of BFA on these weapons, or if they use the internal adapter, like they do in the film industry.

In any case, it is an Army installation there and they should be following the protocol for securing weapons, e.g. an armsroom.
I would love to see the full report on this.
My Guard unit is scheduled to go to NTC this spring. I've been there a number of times when I was stationed at Fort Carson as Infantry. This will be the first time as an MP. Of course, the unit curse might come into play. Each time the unit is scheduled to go to the NTC, it gets cancelled for an overseas deployment. So...we will see.
