View Full Version : Boat finally done.
My 9 year old son and I have been working on a boat for the last 5 months as a grief therapy project and finally got done. Well not totally done. He wants a blue stripe painted down the side and since its his boat it will happen yet. He's been saving all the money he gets from birthdays and little jobs and managed to have enough to buy a used 4hp outboard. Here it is.

I've gotta agree with the kid. A blue stripe down the side would really set this thing off. Nice looking project. Thanks for sharing it.
Those with small used outboards can relate to this picture. I wore the skin off of two fingers trying to get that motor to start. It had started fine at the shop after I had installed a tune up kit. Unfortunately when I put the cover on I had snagged the sparkplug wire and yanked it out of the boot. A little rigging and we was in business.

Very nice!! Looks like you're going to have fun for a while with it! What lake is that?? If you don't mind me asking. Since it home made, do you not have to get CL # and sticker through parks and rec.???
It's Island Lake up on the Grand Mesa. Yea I need to get the CL #. Couldn't wait any longer tho. Decided to risk it. Not sure what they would do if they caught you. Plan was to act dumb. Slavic heritage and all probably could have pulled that off

It looks like it was great fun!
Find a pond you can leave it in for about a week straight - it's about the most accurate way of determining where to put the bootstripe.

Awesome work! Great story and it sounds like your son has good taste. I'll attribute that to a good upbringing. [Beer]

+1, and I vote for the blue stripe as well!

Just a Parks citation, and you'd have to pull it out of the water. Nice looking boat, well done!
That is awesome! My 9 years old can't even hold onto $10 for more than a couple days.
Just out of curiosity, what did you make the boat out of?
We made the boat out of douglas fir plywood. Couldn't find marine grade anywhere around here so just bought the best we could find at local lumberyard.
Yea, I'm real proud of my boy. I was a real pos growing up, burning a lot of bridges and spending all my money with nothing to show for it. Finally grew up when I turned 30 and realized I didn't have anything other than a great woman and our kids. Determined that my kids weren't going to follow in my footsteps and changed my life and they have responded to it. Unfortunately my oldest boy was killed in a accident 3 years ago last May. He would have been 11 this September. This was a project my son and I did as a way to continue to work past all the shit that you go thru.
Oh man. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I couldn't imagine losing one of mine. Glad to see you and your family are pulling through it. Sounds like a great family you have there.
Its agreed the boy has taste, the blue strip would streamline it and give it atleast 4-5 extra hp. Its a good looking boat, conrats and have fun!
Also i agree with ginsue, tell him that now only are we proud of him but he should be as well!
Hey neighbor just up the road from you, really sorry to hear about your boy.Tell your 9 year old that he is pretty awesome. So is his dad. I vote for a red stripe. Great lookin little boat.[Coffee]
What a great job! The stripe will make the boat for sure. I understand your outboard issues, I have a zodiak that I take camping with me (sometimes to Chatfield or whatever) with a 69 Evinrude 35HP and pull starting that is a pain in the butt (fortunately it has electric and I have a marine battery).
Keep up the great work!
