That pretty much sums it up. Chances are he probably didn't even think twice about trying to save her - just did what his instinct told him to do.

Guess I am of the "old school" in that I believe there still are a gazillion really GOOD cops around. Trouble is that we seldom hear of all their great beneficial deeds, normally hear only some of the bad stuff that the few bad ones are accused of. OK, am I wearing "rose colored" glasses - naw, I don't think so.

Imho there are FAR more good cops than bad cops. Bad cops are a minority just like a dishonest employee in any area of employment, from retail to the trades.
Hoping for the best outcome..
How many other people were standing there doing nothing and he went in w/o a thought...

I read that article the other day and wondered if he had a life vest (personal flotation device). I think alot of cops in Florida (near Cocoa beach) carried them in their trunk. You could always read about somebody crashing their car into the water, usually an elderly person and the police officer jumping into the water and rescuing them. I bet if the deputy had a vest to put on he would be safe right now. It is a sad story and the majority of cops are good guys. Now as for the politicians...

+1 Blaster, I don't think so either.

Totally agree. It is just so sad when the bad ones shine a bad light on the entire profession. Those should be dealt with swiftly & effectively.
This guy rose above it all & is a true hero!
Funny.. if this had been a 'cop lets girl drown to save himself' thread...it'd be 20 pages by now...

I tend to be hard on LEO's but this thread should be a salute to a brave man who gave his life 'protecting and serving'. I do truly believe that the vast majority of police in this country are honest and honorable. You don't make the news being good unless your sense of duty forces you to be a hero. If anyone should go with God it is should be Deputy Bryan Gross.
