Hey guys, I'm thinking about putting a chip or a programmer in my 03 dodge cummins. Any suggestions ?

Talk to DFBrews, he is the resident Cummins man.
Banks or Edge work very well. Nothing fancy to hook them up either.

Related question about Dodges, I'm thinking about replacing my Van Akins box with a Quadzilla XZT+ in hopes of better fuel milage while maintaining power when needed, any thoughts or feedback is appreciated

I have an edge, it works great, but I STRONGLY recommend you talk with someone about your tranny before you do it though. In my neck of the woods, lots of doodz F their Pickup in the A with a big rubber D because they jam a chip in there and drive it like a race truck and wonder why the fucker won't run right after a month. Not saying you're that guy, just make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. Happy Hunting! [Beer]

Look into an ATS arc flow intake manifold, you may get the same result and more for less than buying a new chip. Just a thought. [Flower]

I know that Edge chips give the capability to de-tune the diesel when power isn't needed, and do give better mileage.
I personally have never heard of either of the tuners you are asking about. If they say you get better mileage and maybe know someone who can confirm that, go with the Quadzilla. I know Edge has a pretty good reputation.
Smart Jr. is all you need or go Smarty Sr. if you want big power but you'll need supporting mods. I've bought most of them all and love the smarty jr on my '03 cummins!!!

Interesting, I didn't think those did much good for a midly moded truck like mine, I'll look into them.

The main thing with chipping is to make sure that the hard parts can deal with the chip no sense in a 200 dollar ish part blowing up 10 k in parts
All of the major producers make decent chips and they are like AR's everyone has their favorite and will fight to the death on it.
What are you trying to accomplish is the main thing ?
i.e. better mileage, straight line power/speed, towing etc. or just a little more spunk for daily driving.
one chip like the smarty that could give you in the 24/26 mpg range when set on economy may flounder when you crank it up and your towing up a hill and trying to keep your EGT's down.

My main goals are more towing power, better mileage (if such a thing is possible). The truck is totally stock, it has a 6 speed manual tranny, and has less than 28,000 original miles. I don't want to have to add a bunch of mods. I really appreciate the feedback from all you guys.[Beer]

Be careful with chipping. Most units come with a handheld unit that will swap the new programming with your existing programming. DO NOT LOSE THIS UNIT!!!!!!!
Problem is that diesel vehicles are required to get regular emissions tests performed. The 1 place you can get those done in Colo Spr informs the owners that about 75% of the chipped vehicles FAIL.
So, what do you do? Well, just before you go for the inspection, you re-install the original FACTORY programming back into the vehicle and you're set.
This works great unless, like me, you bought a vehicle that was chipped, found out the seller (a POS corner dealership) chips vehicles and instead of putting the unit into the glovebox where the new owner can use it, they just throw it away. Now the new owner has to pay hundreds more to take the vehicle into the dealership to be reprogrammed with factory info. Since vehicles sold through dealerships have to pass emmissions the new owner may not find out about this until 2 years later and be pressed for time to get it fixed & get the emmissions tested/approved in time to get the vehicle registered in time.
Just sayin!
Thanks Ginsue, good to know.[Beer]
