View Full Version : Anyone customize a Mosin Nagant?

I am currently in the process of trying to take a Mosin beyond what it was meant.
I've cut the barrel down to 22" and put an 11 degree target crown on it. I'm tossing the stock and using a Richard's Microfit stock. Also bought a Rock Solid low profile bolt body and the ATI scope mount.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what else I can or should/shouldn't do, let me know... (I know this thread is worthless without pics, so I'll post some on my progress tomorrow)
Thanks

Mods, if this is in the wrong section, please feel free to move as you see fit.

Wow I never knew that I could get the Richard's stocks for my Mosin. I have a ATI I bought and like it.

Which stock did you buy? I am looking to put a scope on mine as well and change to the bent bolt. There are a couple of places that will sell the whole assembly with their angled/bent handle attached.

Looking forward to seeing more on your work.

Is there much of a weight difference from the wooden stock to the ATI?

if you have access to a lathe or a buddy with one you could turn the breech threads to turn the barrel one turn farther in then shave needed material off the breech face for bolt clearance, this would give you a short chamber that you could then recut and tweak the throat how you want, then maybe lap the bore and of course load for it lol, but if your goal is to wee what can be squeezed out without pulling the barrel then it seems you're on the right track, do forget a better trigger if you haven't said that already, also your stock, what's the bedding like on it? pillars? i lloks pretty nice i might have to look into one of those :) oh how does your new bolt work out with your receiver? is it ready go go or need fitting and lapping? i've looked into those as well but i still am stuck on mausers as far as bolt guns lol

Well, I don't think I'm taking that far with the barrel. But I do want to do something about the trigger... I'm working on getting the right pull without having slop (so far, not an easy task). As far as the stock goes, It did need a little bit of work, but not too bad. I have bedding pillars from Rock Solid but still plan on glass bedding. The bold works great, I'd recommend one for anyone that wants a low profile bent bolt on a mosin... I do believe they have them for the mauser as well.

Awesome. I did some work on ours but not that much (just refinished the stocks, peep sight on one scout scope on the other, some light sanding/filing)- yours looks good!

How much did that stock run you (if you don't mind me asking)?

Stock with shipping was $154... I know, more than the rifle. But the way I figure it, if the rifle goes to crap, I still have the stock to put another one into.

I had two 9130's and the lesser of the two got a make-over this past winter just for something to do.

And before you guys razz me too hard, I know my camera sucks! It just seems like every time I save up enough to get a new one, I end up buying a gun instead. [LOL]

I did the paint myself and went with an ACUPAT pattern the first time around and made some horrible beginner mistakes. I opted for a net/scale pattern the second time around and it come out pretty neat and stayed put.

I spent some time zeroing the budget Osprey scope on it and shot 4 rounds on a clean target at 100 yards. The second shot was that flyer. My fault.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/163/4shotsu.jpg

I looked and looked for alternatives to the ATI stock and came up dry. I sure wish I could have found the beauty you're using on your build.
Other than that, I took 2 inches off and re-crowned the barrel with a little help from a friend. Added the ATI scope mount, and sent the original bolt off to Jim The Boltman. If someone out there isn't up to the task of doing your bolt yourself, and purchasing a full bent bolt isn't an option (seems like nobody had them when I looked), look him up. He replaced the handle, added a safety ring, and bead-blasted the whole thing for 80$. It is REALLY nice work.

In closing, Mosins are awesome!

Was it hard to take off the rear sight? I have a scope on my mosin and I would like to remove the iron sights off of mine.

Taking off the rear sight was pretty easy. Mine wasn't soldered on. After removing the sight, all I did was take my Dremel with grinding tool to it. Took all of about 1 hour to complete.

I had some difficulty getting it started. Just grease well, pad well, and tap slow and it should come right off if there isn't much/any corrosion.

I wish I had done same. The ramp is still there and I'm not painting the damn thing again.

Which way should I tap it? From the back side or the front?

Towards the front. You've got the 2 pins, however, lift the sight too, you may have a screw under it as well.

Thanks for the kind words... Its been a fun project so far. I'm getting close to having this thing done. Just need to finish the stock off with a recoil pad then time to get it sighted in.
After completion, I was thinking about a pine straw paint job.
I'll post more pictures soon. [Recon]

Bipod added... still working on the stock (with sandpaper) to get the end flat for mounting the recoil pad. Trigger work done... shimmed and spring added for 2 stage feel. Haven't actually tested trigger pull, but it's much shorter and feels to be about 5lbs.

A little more progress... Completely cleaned (Damn, this thing had lots of cosmoline inside it). Base coat on rifle. Bent bolt is in. All that's left to do is sight it in (hopefully tomorrow) and finish painting... Yes, the scope too.

Either I need better ammo than the surplus crap that I used today, or I need to learn how to shoot again. This is the best group I got at 100 yds after zeroing my scope... Only brought 20 rds to the range today.

Did you do that yourself? I am looking for someone to cut my Mosin barrel down.

I did most of it myself, but had the barrel cut & crowned by a smith... You could probably have Bert (BP Tactical) do it for you. Check the Industry Partners section for his contact info.

Both efforts look nice and like fun DIY projects.
SRH- glass bed that rifle and I will bet your groups tighten up!

Cutting the barrel down and re-crowning is a must for these old critters if you want any type of accuracy. All of the 91/30's I have seen have either a worn out muzzle or have been counterbored.
Neither is conducive to decent groups.

Thanks Bert... This thing has not been counter bored. The rifling is perfect and clean. I think I lucked out in that department. However, I think I'll take your advice on glass bedding. I just need to get the stuff. Just need to find it.

I do recall seeing it. Did I not reply? If not my sincerest of apologies.
I was trying another cell phone and I got whopperjawed trying to sync everything[Bang]
To hell with the Hemmeroid, I am back to my Crackberry.
New pm headed your way.....................Sorry brutha!

SRH- don't waste your money or time with either AccraGlass or AccraGel from Brownells. Go to Grainger and get the Devcon Plastic Steel putty # 10110. The stuff rocks-it has so much steel in it, it will rust and is magnetic. If you really want to go high tech Devcon makes Titanium putty which is lighter but pricey.

OT but what do you use for a release agent with the steel putty?

I use 2 coats of Johnson Paste wax, buffed between coats and then right before I set the action in place I spray it with a food grade silicone release agent.
Comes out slicker than deer guts on a doorknob.

I ordered my new bolt and scope mount tonight from Rock Solid. I ended up calling him on the phone as I had questions about his in-stock items.

We talked for a long time. He was very helpful. Anyway he started asking me questions about my barrel. He asked if I had cleaned it thoroughly and if it shot well. Of course I replied yeah I cleaned it. Duh. :) He started telling me about Never Dull wadding polish. I am familiar with the product as it works wonders on chrome. He told me to use it to clean the barrel. I had just cleaned it last week and the patches were coming out clean (or so I thought). He explained that when they packed them in the cosmoline solution the temps would go from very hot to super cold (winter) and this would harden it. He told me it had beeswax and diesel (by this time co-workers were coming in and bothering me so I could not pay too much attention) and is very hard to clean but the never dull cleans it out nicely.

I was amazed to see the results. I used the wadding then used a patch couple of times. I could not believe the crud that was coming out. The barrel looks amazing now. Nice and bright.
