Just as the title says, my wife has gone plinking with our youngest and the middle son and hs yet to go shooting with the bun in the oven right now. We havnt had much time to go shooting since I just got off a 35 day hitch for work. I have read that it is a big no no and then I have read it isnt a big deal if its a ventilated range and she isnt handling lead and smearing it all over her supple breasts or some shit like that.
When we go its usually outside at my property in Hartsel or property I have access to in Kiowa.
What say the great folks of CO-AR15 on this?
ETA: She is around 6 months along and due at the beginning of November.
One main reason is we are getting back to being financially stable and want her to get her damn CCW finally. I know there are classes that are classroom only, but she wants to shoot for it.
Thanks
Gabe [M2]
How far along is she? Can't she just wait?
i'd say no, heart rate, stress, sounds like a miscarriage, not to even touch fumes, idk its not mine, good luck, its a choice you wont be able to take back if it turns up wrong, bullets bouncing back, shat anything can go wrong..............best wishes
What heart rate? What stress? He's not talking about a gun fight.

its always a gun fight, just a paper target, idk people that havent shot in a while get worked up its normal, that why people train to control the nerves aka heart rate.....hillbilly 101, lol i talk from my ass
recoil, lol i'm sure you thought about that, hitting a prego not so good, shaking, shat what do i know.
I would add in the noise, it can severely damage developing ears in a child.

naw really, huh i figured as long as the mom had ear protection the baby was covered, lmao, sorry i'm a ass, but times two good point!!!

I was debating this while my wife was pregnant because I wanted her to get her to be able to shoot and get her CCW. I thought the same thing about the lead/fumes, if you're outside it doesn't seem like a big deal to me- that sounded more like hippy nonsense. The thing I didn't think about was that the baby doesn't really have much hearing protection and would be subjected to very high levels of noise and it would be very easy to damage the babies sensitive ears. So on that reason she waited until after she delivered to go shoot. I say wait if you can or this may be a perfect excuse to go buy a can :)

While I think its probably ok (depending on how far along she is)... the risk outweighs the benefit IMO. Better to just wait.
To put it short: it is not okay ! Forget bringing pregnant woman even nearby shooting range, unless pregnancy has just begun (like 2-3 weeks).

She is around 6 months along, We can wait it was just something that came up this evening when we were talking about me wanting her to get her CCW permit. I forgot about the inprotected belly, cuz she is all belly and otherwise is skinny minnie chick.
So with that I think we will wait unless we find a decent course with NO shooting and just classroom.
I really want her to go through Jim who is in Windsor, he is one hell of an instructor from what I have read from others and talked to him about.
smart man, shat half of it is the draw and she can practice that now, but once she has the kid it might change with the body shape. thats where i'd start, shooting easy, being the first out is hard.
besides the ccw is a stupid class, nothing really learned if you know guns and how to handle them

She is very proficient with her pistol and all the rifles we have. I did teach her how to draw and also double taps while controlling the pistol and she puts some guys to shame on her ability to handle a pistol efficiently.
Probably will never piss her off just for that fact [ROFL1]

I would add in the noise, it can severely damage developing ears in a child.
My wife and I went to see a movie when the oldest was invitro. Transformers was so loud that Emma started to freak out inside mom and we had to leave.
That plus handling lead would equal a no dice for me buddy. Wait till the little one is done cooking and out playing with her older siblings.
she is too far along and it could damage the childs hearing. The kid can hear you talk loudly and will recognize your voice when born if you talk to him/her enough. Their organs are also developing a lot right now and are sensitive. extreme noise can cause issues as well.
My wife is due beginning of October with our first so I have asked the doctor a lot of stuff that relates.
not worth it to do some shooting if it could potentially cause harm to the baby's hearing. now I highly doubt a .22 will do much, but a lot of bigger handgun or rifle shooting could definitely do some damage.
now if you have a silencer for a .22, then go for it all day, just not indoors. the lead exposure is very high and can also cause problems. we don't see it nearly as much as adults but for kids and pregnant women it is an issue.
Pregnant women aren't even supposed to change a cat's litter box. I think you can just wait.

Ok. The bottom line answer is don't have her near shooting while pregnant. Here's why; most primers are lead styphenate. Every shot aerates lead particles. A preteen can't handle lead levels in their blood of 9 parts per million, ppm, without significant health hazards. This is 0.000009 grams in one milliliter of blood. This is amount is so small its hard to measure without spending $100k on instrumentation to do the analysis. Additionally, lead replaces calcium in a humans bones as they replenish old tissue when you have high lead levels. This particularly dangerous the younger the human is as the lead is being enveloped into newly forming bone structure.
The most dangerous health consequence to children from high lead levels is brain damage. The damage is grossly compounded in children because the neuron cells are essentially reproducing themselves until about the age 22. The younger the damage happens, the more compounded the damage can be.
As for how much lead would be filtered out by mom before reaching the fetus, I don't really know, but it takes so little to cause health problems it's just not worth the risk at all.

I appreciate all the insight to this and she has a Doc appointment tomorrow and was going to ask ( I forgot about the appointment until after I posted this thread) and see what the Doc says. Sounds like she doesnt need to ask and that we will wait till she pops and then can focus on getting ehr permit.
This sight kicsk ass , Thanks guys [Beer]

Oh ok... nothing learned huh? I have to disagree with you on that. Are you a CCW instructor? Maybe the half-assed bullshit class you went through to get your CCW (which I'm assuming you are speaking from experience here) didn't go through much you didn't know, but the class I teach covers topics such as when to draw, when to shoot, the legal ramifications of using a weapon in defense of self and others, home defense, how to deal with LE, and other useful and legal topics that can keep you alive and out of prison. So no, the CCW is not a stupid class, if you get it from the right, informed, and quality instructor.

My godson's Mom went shooting outside a few times while pregnant with him. He can hear like a champ and is one of the smartest (if not THE smartest) 2 year-olds I have ever met (I'm a Dad and have met a lot). If he was a test subject I would say that all expectant moms should go shooting!
PS - But seriously, please don't take this as a recommendation!

Great article. I didn't even think about using frangible nontoxic ammo. I even have 2/3rds a case of 9mm of it too.
I can tell you from first hand experience hat indoor ranges with bad air is the primary cause of lead exposure. I tested high for lead at one point, 21 ppm, and I was feeling the effects of it. I went in and requested heavy metals testing because I was having low level pain persistent headaches for no apparent reason. 11 ppm is max allowable level for an adult. I was shooting at an indoor range a lot at the time (in MD). I quit shooting the and stopped nothing else. I tested a 5ppm a year later.
The Drs were clueless as what to do. I ended up researching lead exposure myself to figure it all out. there's a lot of research out there about kids and lead exposure from old paint chips, but very little about exposure to adults, muchness pregnant women.
Don't let her do it. The baby can hear all sorts of things including loud ass gun shots.
Tell her to just wait the few months.
