View Full Version : Books!
Sorry, silly title, but I had a question. I watched a documentary on private security not too long ago and they featured author Brad Thor on there and spoke about the controversy he started with his book "The Last Patriot"- Glenn Beck said he might become targeted by Muslim extremists and the book has been banned in Saudi Arabia. Well I want to read his books now since the reviews have come back so great. Book one is called "The Lions of Lucerne" and they're similar to other favorite authors of mine like Vince Flynn and Tom Clancy. Question is: Has anyone read "Lions" and if so what did you think?
We should make this a sticky and talk about our favorite fiction...

I have picked up a few of his books but just could not get into them.

How come? Have you read Vince Flynn? And I read some of the W.E.B. Griffin "Presidential Agent" series, wow! Loved them, but just haven't had a whole lot of time to get into reading until recently and want to check out Thor.

I have read all but his latest book... I enjoyed them all.
Lions is a great read...
Vince Flynn is good also.

All of those above are on my list but I am working on The Stand now. And not just the regular version but the extended version in which King added back 500 pages of story removed from the original...this one will take me a while. Good read though...
Others read in the last few months...
Bravo Two Zero
Last Light (terrible book)
Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse
Lights Out
Starship Troopers
One Second After
The Overton Window
World War Z
Can you see a theme (besides Bravo Two Zero and Starship Troopers)?

You have a room in your house that is locked and says "Do not open until SHTF"?
Good luck with The Stand, I've heard that's a good one, but takes a large chunk of time to complete.

I'm a big Vince Flynn fan, but now I want to try the books you mentioned Ronin.

I got it on my Kindle which doesn't have page numbers so I really didn't know how long it was. Shit, just looked it up and it's about 1500 pages...

This is my first King book. $8.99 for Kindle so I didn't support him too much.
See that's where I tend to draw a little bit of a line... granted Sean Penn starred in a movie recently that accuses the Bush Admin of being no better than terrorists (can't remember the name, don't care enough to look it up), but I can still enjoy him as Spicoli, or go watch Colors and not totally boycott him before all his anti-right and anti-Bush rhetoric. If they continue to write good books I won't boycott authors just because they're libtards... that is unless they start spouting their shit in their books.
the stand was great so is Cell by king if you like zombie books........someone in the springs should loan me one second after and the patriot :)

One Second After in PDF form is posted in the Survival/Preparedness discussion- sorry about to leave the office and don't have time to actually go dig it up, but look for the topic saying something about One Second After- great read by the way.
And Cell, I heard it's pretty awesome, any truth to the plans for a making of a movie? From the reviews and summary I read on it sounds like something I would love to read then see as a movie!

It's good to have some books to read. Being inclined to insomnia I manage some.
Right now I'm reading http://www.amazon.com/Age-Greed-Triumph-Finance-Decline/dp/1400041716/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312497144&sr=1-1 "Age of Greed: The Triumph of Finance and the Decline of America, 1970 to the Present ". It actually goes a bit further back and shows how JFK & Johnson weren't so hot either. Even Carter did some pretty bad stuff when he wasn't being a doofus. It's an exhaustive (and exhausting) list of all the candidate for post-natal abortion who torched the future to have a great present. There's better stuff out there but I'll probably finish it.
Then I have the new Game of Thrones book, A Dance With Dragons. Signed by the guy at Tattered Cover. It's bit and then I have a well regarded WWII book after so I booked up.

I tried getting them as a sticky.
The Stand was one of the best King books I've read. We should all just become members of Goodreads and share our reading lists.

I pretty much only read zombie books and Ted Dekker.
If anyone wants any suggestions of good zombie books, I've read something like 30 or 40. Just send me a pm.

A real good place to buy used books is half.com. It is owned by eBay, but very cheap to buy. I bought a hard cover, barely worn World War Z book for $2.00 plus $4.00 for shipping.
I have a friend that runs a book store, and I try to patronize her whenever I can. She is kind of struggling, and I have spent more money there than I care to think about. Especially when people tell me that I could be getting books for only $2.00. That's an awesome deal!
