So I've been saving for a while for my next firearm purchase and it's a 1911. I've narrowed it down to a few manufacturers I've liked the look and/or feel of. Sig, Springfield, and I like the Ruger as well. Here is where I'm getting a little confused/overwhelmed. There are so many different models of the same gun on the makers site I just don't know which one is right. This will be my first 1911, and I want a very nice out of the box gun for weekend shooting, thats all. Oh and full size, 5" and possibly a doublestack if I can find one in the mentioned brands.
What 'model' of a 1911 do you suggest? Tactical, custom, target, etc etc

I have 3 double stack 1911's 2 are Rock Island Armory, 2 are 45 acp, and the other is a 22 tcm/9mm and I think 38 super would work. The RIA 45 acp is a very nice gun if you are looking for a nice mil spec 1911. It is one of the most accurate 1911 pistols I have shot. I also own a Para 14.45 LDA (light double action) It is a very nice gun, not quite as accurate as my RIA but my RIA also has a nice trigger job. I am also interested in owning a Sig 1911 as well as a Ruger, I can not find any one who is selling the Ruger, I have heard good things about both but have never even held one, I do know that every piece is made in the usa on the Ruger. Springfield makes a very nice 1911 from there mil spec to the operator. If you do get a DS 1911 I would reccomend getting the feedramp polished, it will help cut down the failer to feed problems that DS 1911 pistols can sometimes have mostly caused by that style magazine. I have fired alot of 1911 pistols, Ranging from a Colt to a Singer to a RIA. I would like to think I know a little about the pistol as I work on them and have fired and owned alot of them, but I am by no means a professional just trying to help and add my opinion. And it has been my favorate gun since I was a kid so I have been learning about them every since I could shoot a gun. I have heard that STI is the only one that has the DS 1911 down, I am not sure as I have never fired one. My DS RIA 1911 also has a polished feedramp smooth as butter. I hope this helps.

I did look at RIA's too, and hell if they are as good as everyone says, I just may save $500.

Lemme ask you this playing dumb consumer for a minute, what am I going to miss/feel from a $500 RIA to a $1000 Sig, Springer, Ruger etc, even tho the SR1911 is only $800

I would bet that the RIA tactical 1911 would be on par with the Ruger as far as performance. You can also get an ATI I have held them in the store heard good things and I have the gsg 1911-22 and the quality is outstanding for a $300 gun. You can also get a Desert Eagle 1911g I own one and besides my Smith&Wesson It is the best 1911 out of the 10 that I own. The action on the DE is down right amazing and you can get it for $700 maybe cheaper depending were you go. Up above is my RIA nickle mil spec 1911, I paid 399.00 for it NIB.

Awesome, thanks again bro.
Awesome, thanks again bro. Were are you seeing the ruger for 800, cause msrp on it is 799.00. You should be able to get it for at least 650 or 700 out the door. My Taurus PT1911 has a MSRP of 859.00 and I paid 650.00 out the door at jensons. And I dont know if I mentioned it but A Taurus PT1911 is a good gun as well I have 2 one is custom and the other is stainless steal all stock, but it comes with ambi safety combat hammer and trigger, all the bells and whistles you get with the other guns, but with a way better price tag. And they have a lifetime warranty on the gun not just the person who originaly purchased it. I had to send in my PT22 and one of my PT1911 cause I did not want to void the warranty, it was a small problem but they were very fast and had amazing customer service

I've been waiting since mid-June for one and still nothing.

If it was me personally and I wanted one off the shelf I'd look for a used Colt Gold Cup, or plain series 70 depending on price range.
The other idea might be to go cheaper with a RIA or Taurus and make sure you like the 1911, I've heard good stuff about the RIA/Citadels and I like my Taurus.
If you like the platform it will not be your last, I've owned 4 at this point, still have 3 of them and regret letting the 1 go. (taurus P1911, Springfield Loaded, and one I'm building now, the one I let go was a 1965 gold cup, yeah I'm kicking myself still)

UberTong,
I only scanned through the other posts, and I didn't catch if it was mentioned, Springfield Armory makes a double stack 1911.
But if this is going to be your first time, go with a single stack, it is the real deal and the right feel that you will fall in love with.
Back in the early 80s I bought my first 1911, an old beat up surplus pistol, and have been hooked on them ever since. THEY ARE WORSE THAN CRACK !
I own lots of 1911s.
Many single stacks and many double stacks.
Most of my single stacks are built on Caspian slides and frames and the double stacks are built up on STI/SVI frames and slides.
Right now you cant beat either a STI Trojan or a Springfield TRP.
I shoot a lot of matches and see what works and what does not. Many competitive IPSC and IDPA shooters will shoot 10-15,000 rounds a year.

I would have to agree with SideShow Bob I really did not like the feel of a double stack 1911, I am a diehard 1911 fan and there is nothing like the feel of a nice single stack 1911 in your hand. It took some getting used to with the double stack 1911, It had to grow on me for a while.

Rock Island Armory, Citadels, and Ati are all made in the phillippines, Charles daly used to be made by Armscor which is what makes RIA, I dont think they do anymore as far as I know Charles daly is on there own now. They all came out of the Philippines at one time and the other 3 still do.
Hey Uber
I have a RIA1911 and its a great pistol. Havent shot a lot of other makes for comparison, but I really like mine. .45 CAL. all the way.[Beer]
Here's my take on 1911s after 35 years of owning many Colts, Kimbers, Springfields & Dan Wessons- low price, get an RIA; medium price, get a Springfield; high, get a Colt, Kimber or Dan Wesson; very high, get a Les Baer or Wilson. Good luck with your choice. WB

Good luck with your choice. WB Being his first 1911 I would go with a RIA that way if he does not like it or wants to get a different pistol, he is not out a lot of money and you can almost always sell a Rock Island for very close if not exactly what you payed for it. What the heck I will stand behind RIA so much if he buys it and does not like it I will buy it from him. Get the tactical version unless you like mil-spec. You will not be dissapointed with a tactical Ria, you can get it in Parkerized or Nickle finish on the gun, or there is always the Taurus PT1911 that is a great gun. I am not sure were you live but give Jenson Arms @ (970) 663-5994 Ask for Jeff, they are located in loveland. Or you can check out 5280 Armory @ (720) 898-4747. They are locayed in arvada. I hope this helps you out some more. Be safe and have fun and shoot until your trigger finger cant move or you run out of ammo what ever comes first.
Keep in mind resale value on the less known 1911s is not very good.
Keep in mind resale value on the less known 1911s is not very good. I will give him exactly what he paid for it as long as it is what they normaly sell for, not some high priced gun shop price, some were like Jensons or 5280 Armory is a good place to get one, or off of Gun Broker. I deal directly with Fred Craig For my stuff and I will stand behind anything he desighns.

Took my new TRP to BlueCore today, and had such a great time! It was my first time shooting a 1911, and second time ever shooting. I was totally impressed with the gun. Went through 150 rounds of PMC 230g FMJ, without any issues at all. It ran smooth, and I can already tell it will probably always be able to shoot better than I can. I did pretty dang good I think, and left very happy. I need to work on my groupings, focus, and relax more....but i'll get there. I did have some real nice groupings from the 5.5-7yrd area. I took the gun down last night and cleaned/oiled it, to get rid of the factory stuff. I used Gunzilla, and some Royal Purple 5w-20 on the slide areas...thats what I had, so thats what I used lol. FYI, it worked great! Anyway, can't wait to get back and squeeze off more rounds.
Oh and FYI, I was quoted $579 on the Ruger SR1911 from Tom & Joes last month. My name is still on the list, so we'll see. That sounds about what it should be were is that place located?
