So, I know this thread is going to be out of the norm as of lately, but I figured it I would post it anyway. It is about a new cancer treatment in which basically, they take your T cells out of your body, train them for lack of easier terms to understand, and them put them back in your body to kill the cancer. No funky drugs or anything else. They just send your T cells to boot camp.

A new leukemia treatment (http://www.aol.com/2011/08/10/leukemia-gene-therapy-treatment_n_923663.html) is wowing even the researchers behind its creation, providing results beyond their wildest expectations.
It's virtually eradicated cancerous leukemia cells in the first three patients it's been tested on.
In two of the first three patients the process was tested on the treatment completely destroyed the most common type of leukemia, according to MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44090512/ns/health-cancer/?GT1=43001). In the third patient, the treatment seems to have reduced the cancerous cells to 70 percent of what they once were.
"Within three weeks, the tumors had been blown away, in a way that was much more violent than we ever expected," said senior author Carl June, MD told Penn Medicine (http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2011/08/t-cells/).
Amazingly, the breakthrough actually uses patients' own T cells to fight the cancer, according to the University of Pennsylvania's news release (http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2011/08/t-cells/). Researchers took the T cells of the patients, ran them through Penn's vaccine production facility, and then reintroduced them to the patients' bodies following chemotherapy.
The result was a very, very effect means of treatment that showed very positive results within 28 days. "In addition to an extensive capacity for self-replication, the infused T cells are serial killers. On average, each infused T cell led to the killing of thousands of tumor cells – and overall, destroyed at least two pounds of tumor in each patient," June told Penn (http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2011/08/t-cells/).
Those who took part in the study were nearly out of options before the treatment. The news release (http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2011/08/t-cells/) states that short of a bone marrow transplant (which carries at lest a 20 percent mortality risk and only 50 percent chance of recovery) none of these patients had alternative medical options.
The next step for scientists is to test the treatment on different types of leukemia. In the future, the process may be modified to target other types of tumors, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and acute lymphocytic leukemia.
Amazingly, MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44090512/ns/health-cancer/?GT1=43001) reports that this radical treatment almost never happened. Funding for the experiment was apparently hard to find, and is one reason the treatment has only been tried on three patients.
From MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44090512/ns/health-cancer/?GT1=43001):

Both the National Cancer Institute and several pharmaceutical companies declined to pay for the research. Neither applicants nor funders discuss the reasons an application is turned down. But good guesses are the general shortage of funds and the concept tried in this experiment was too novel and, thus, too risky for consideration. With promising results like this, it's hard to imagine how it could be so hard to get funding.

What's crazy is they used the HIV virus to do it:

"In the Penn experiment, the researchers removed certain types of white blood cells that the body uses to fight disease from the patients. Using a modified, harmless version of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, they inserted a series of genes into the white blood cells. These were designed to make to cells target and kill the cancer cells. After growing a large batch of the genetically engineered white blood cells, the doctors injected them back into the patients."

So the most feared plague of the modern age may well hold the key to curing one of humanity's oldest diseases. Quite cool. Of course there's a lot more research to be done before victory can be declared. Working in 3 patients doesn't mean it will work large scale.

I only hope that this doesn't lead to an "I Am Legend" Scenario...

isn't that something that we are all geared up for anyway... [Coffee]
the i am legend idea from science is a project that i read about a while back where they were using the flesh eating bacteria as a weight loss program... there were actually clinical trials. never did read about what came of them though.

That's SO cool to hear about! Awesome! I hope this opens doors to solving these types of health issues, especially without drugs.

I'm not sure I could shoot my neighbor if his T cells turned 'I am Legend'... poor bastard has gone through enough :)

I had a friend 10 years ago who had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and after a couple of rounds of targeted chemo, she had T-cells removed and grown, then her body was hit with a large dose of radiation, which finally killed the cancer and then the T-cells were replaced in the hopes of kick starting her immune system after the radiation destroyed it. It only partially worked and her immune system was extremely weak. She succumbed when she was hospitalized with the flu and a contracted a staph infection at the hospital. Her immune system wasn't strong enough to combat the infections.

I hope the medical advances have been significant in this area since she went through it and people are surviving.

If it works, Great more power to them and to all the Cancer patients in need!! But??? If Not!!

This is exactly what I was thinking when I read this.
