View Full Version : I think that I am going to start
Shooting 9x19 in a 40 is no problem and I know lots of people do it.
However, from a Competition standpoint it is a double edge sword.
In USPSA a barrel caliber change is not allowed in Production Division, but allowed in Limited or Limited 10.
In IDPA a barrel caliber change moves you from Stock Service Pistol to Enhanced Service Pistol.
I shoot a lot of 9x19 in USPSA, 3-Gun, Steel Challenge and IDPA. In fact I can not remember the last time I shot my STI 40 in a match.

A G34 is a great pistol for it. I'd avoid the caliber change for the above reasons. But I'm not a fan of 40.

In all types of competitive shooting, caliber selection is dependent on the division you want to shoot. In USPSA, 40 is minimum required for major power factor in Limited and Limited 10 divisions. In production class, most every one shoots 9mm as all production shooters are scored as minor power factor regardless of caliber. If your intention is to run production class the G34 or a S&W M&P Pro will serve you very well. Get a decent set of sights, a trigger job (which is easy on a glock), grab some mags and go have fun. If your intention is to run in Limited or Limited 10, then you will want a G35 to take advantage of the major power factor scoring. The nice thing about getting a 9mm for production class is that it is a great jack of all traits caliber and is a very common choice for steel challenge as well as 3gun competitions. Production class is also the least expensive division to get up and running in. You might consider swinging by the Pueblo match tomorrow. You can take some time to see what the different divisions are all about and get the inside scoop on all of the gear. http://pikespeakpracticalshooters.com/

For the best bang for the buck, I would say Glock 35. While 40cal isn't as cheap as 9mm, it ain't as bad as .45. You can use the glock for every type of pistol Competition match there is in Colorado such as GSSF(glock match dur..), USPSA(Production,Limited,Limited10), 3Gun, IDPA (Not sure if its SSP legal?) Steel Challenge(Iron Sight limited). But honestly.. I rather Have a 9mm :D, I don't really agree with you on 9mm not being a defense caliber thing, but thats a discusion for another section in this forum. [UZI]
Are there any matches up north? Pueblo is just too far for me. Denver metro or around there?
