View Full Version : 1911 for ccw?
What do you guys think about a full size govt model 1911 for ccw. Too hard to conceal or what is your opinion. I just picked up an STI Spartan in 9mm. My first 1911, and love it. Holster ideas etc. Thanks

With a good dual clip/loop type IWB holster it should carry very nicely.
It may be heavier than a poly wonder 9 but its also quite slim.
If you're not a stickler for 100% leather then you could go for a Crossbreed Supertuck (http://www.crossbreedholsters.com/SuperTuckDeluxe.aspx) ... everybody seems to love them.
If you like all leather, there's several good options out there (for example Lobo Gunleather down in Pueblo makes a real nice all leather dual loop IWB (http://www.lobogunleather.com/5_iwb_style_for_revolvers_and_autos))
That lobo looks nice, how about an outside the wb high ride, looks more comfortable but probably wont hide as well.

It can definitely be done, I've done it and I'm not that big of a guy and my clothes do fit me instead of hanging off my body.
Check out Dale Fricke's holsters, IMO the best there is. Archangel is the best model, but if you need touchable the Joab is a great option.

Recently got a 1911 Government Model, love it. My crossbreed holster is awesome. I think that is more comfortable than my IWB holster for my .38 snub-nose.
I think it's all about the holster. I'm also a big guy. But an uncomfortable holster will make you miserable.
My daily carry weapon is a full-size SA 1911. I usually carry in a cheap Uncle Mikes IWB holster. I've got lots of other holsters, but the Uncle Mikes is the most comfortable for me.

I carry a colt rail gun in a blade tech holster all day long with no issues

do it. the width of hte 1911 is ideal. Copmare it to an XD, glock, hk or similar double stack and you will see the difference.

Very well put. My full size 1911 conceals alot better than my Glock 23. It works perfectly for the times that you have to dress up more than normal and do not wear loose fitting clothes. The weight really does not bother me at all as Glock 23 fully loaded with 13+1 rounds can be quite heavy.

I'm getting too old and feeble to carry a 5" 1911 anymore. [Coffee]
A few years back I switched to a LB alloy frame commander and a Kimber alloy frame 4". Much easier for me to carry. Lately I've been playing around with a Springer EMP40.
There's just a bit too much me inside my jeans so I don't carry bigger guns IWB. My Ruger LC9, sure. [ROFL2]

I carry it all the time in my Galco King tuck, or other holsters I have like 5. Much thinner than the glocks, and other pistols I own, I also carry some micro pistols sometimes, like the kel-tec "Tre-Duce" (P32)... those are nice in the pocket holster when your in shorts, belly band is very comfortable...

I carry 5" and 3.5" 1911s. While the 3.5" is obviously easier to conceal, I find the 5" more comfortable. The longer muzzle helps stabilize the gun (in moderately high rise holsters), making it feel more balanced. Congrats on the new gun!
This is a pic of the 1911 I carry in an Uncle Mike's (OWB passive retention) holster. I have no problems carrying/concealing it at all. I think the slim design of the 1911 is excellent for conceal-carry. I had a full size Kimber TLE RL 2 that I traded BrokenScout for this and loved it as well.
