Ok, so here is the thing. I moved, and now my damn linksys wireless router isn't working. It worked like a charm in my old place, however now it won't run a damn thing wirelessly or hardlined. WTF? Anyone have any ideas?

At least 90% of computer problems can be fixed by turning it off and back on.

That said, wire your computer straight to the modum to make sure you have signal there. If you do then plug in the router and visit it through the computer. i.e. 192.168.1.1 or 2.1 and see if any settings need to be reset there.

Check which wifi channel it is running on. You may have interference / overlap with other peoples wifi. Additionally you can get programs that will sniff your wifi area tell you what other networks are broadcasting on. It is really just radio, and if everyone is using the same frequency it will just turn to noise.[Luck]

I've set it to channel 1, 6, and 11. None of them work. The computer works when hard wired.

What are your security settings? I would say get into the setup and reset the router to stock settings. Then rebuild the security from there. It could be an error in the broadcast ID, or a number of other things.

Bahaha, as soon as I saw the title I thought, "Are you SURE it was working at the old place?"

There's a parable about people calling tech support and saying, "My wireless stopped working." The first question you should ask is, "Did you have any neighbors that moved recently?"

Does your computer even detect your broadcasted SSID? Could also be an issue on the PC side. Maybe a faulty wi-fi card

Go into your router verify wireless is enabled and change the wifi broadcast name (SSID). Restart your router and "sniff" for the new network from your PC. If you cant find (sniff) it may be a hardware problem (PC or router). Check also if the network broadcasting has been disabled. this would prevent you (or other people) from seeing (sniffing) your network.

Hope I'm not getting to geeky with the nomenclature!

If you have something else besides the one PC to sniff with it might help isolate the problem.

Power cycle the modem, then power cycle the router once the modem is on line then release/renew your pc's IP. If that doesnt work but you can connect when straight to the modem do a factory reset on the router. But modems have to be reset when changing attached devices like PC to router etc. Also make sure the correct power cord is attached to the router, I had 1 Linksys and 1 Netgear this week with power cord issues, they light up but wont connect or the lights blink funky.

Depending on the WiFi you may need to update you're location settings in the tools / help. I have to do this often to keep mine running!!

I like wired networks.

if the neighbor wants to leech they'll have to break in.

Neighbors aren't close enough to use mine.

Are you sure you didn't turn off your wireless cardv on the pc? Simple I know but I have seen others do it.

I can link up to my router with the wireless, but the router won't get online. I had to reset it because I forgot my password, I did set up the security again also. All of the lights come on, it reads that it has internet and when I hard wire my computer into port one, it reads that port one is active, but there is still no internet from the router even when hardlined.

My router has a small reset button you have to use a ballpoint pen to depress it, check to see if yours has the same.

Do you have internet when you port straight into your computer without the router? If so, the manual on mine says: unplug the power cord to your modem and to your router. Wait 1 minute. Plug in the power cord to the modem only. Let it connect to the internet, you should be able to tell by looking at the lights on the unit. Once connected plug in the power to your router. Connect your computer and hope for the best.

1) RTFM (read the "fine" manual)
2) reset the modem to factory settings
3) follow the manual for initial setup
4) surf the net at smoking speeds

1) connect your computer directly to the internet

Erm, don't do this. Use another internet connection or your hard wired connection through the router. Directly connecting a Windows machine to the internet without a NAT device in front of it, in a IP block belonging to an ISP can result in infection within minutes.

Thanks. I corrected it. (maybe replace #1 with: have someone burn you a CentOS CD, boot off the CD and wipe the Microsuck virus OS off the computer ; ) I like the "Erm" better than an "Uhh" btw...

Sounds like an IP or authentication problem with your ISP.

Go into you WAN setting in your router and do a release/renew and make sure it is set to DHCP. You should then get a public IP address (72.125.x.x or similar gibberish) you will not have a 192.168.x.x as this is a "private" IP address for your "internal" network. If you router is not getting a new "public" address, it is not authenticating you with your ISP. If you have Comcast unplug both you Linksys and you modem at the same time and plug them back in together (AKA Comcast Trick). If you have Qwest or a new ISP, please contact them, as your account info may not be authenticating correctly.

If its Comcast you want to plug the modem in and wait for it to sync then plug the router in.

Pushing and releasing the reset button will not wipe out your settings, pushing and holding it for 30 seconds will but it only takes a minute to set them up again. I set up 40-50 wireless networks a week and 10 or so wired through gateways. I also see about 5 routers (Linksys and Netgear) a week eat dust, or their power supply takes a dirt nap.

I have tried everything and have now said fuck it. I'm going to buy a belkin N600 from walmart tomorrow and use my linksys for target practice. I wonder what would happen to it if I put it on top of a half pound of tannerite?

Nah, if I take shit to destroy, I put it in a big box with the opening facing me and the part I'm shooting standing up in it, that way all the pieces stay in it and I just tilt the box over back onto its bottom and take it away with all the broken pieces in it. Makes clean up absolutely nothing.

Ok, so one of my favorite lines is the one off of armogeddon "american components, russian components, ALL MADE IN TAIWAN!!!" and then he hits it... Well anyway, I try everything I can before doing something that will usually break the item. I have done this so many times it isn't even funny, especially electronics. Once I have decided that there is nothing else to do but replace it, I give it one last "love tap" figuring it is going to be trashed anyway. Funny part is, most of my stuff starts working again... I don't understand nor am I going to try to. After doing absolutely everything I could to make the router work, my wife laughed and said "why don't you just hit it, seems to work with everything else". Since I figured the router would definately break, I just never tried it. So, before heading out to walmart for a new one, I picked it up and gave it a toss. It took a couple of bounces off the concrete before coming to rest up against the house. Then for shits and giggles, I gave it a try... I am now typing this post off of the wireless network that is now running off of my old router. I don't know how, or why it is working, but it is like nothing was ever wrong. I reset all of my security settings as they were before. Anyone care to explain how it is now working? Or do I just chalk it up to another "ALL MADE IN TAIWAN" thing? [LOL]
