The American hikers that were detained in Iran for the past two years under suspicion of espionage were sentenced to 8 years in prison.
I call them idiots cause you can't be very bright if you think hiking around between Iran and Iraq makes for a nice vacation.

I tend to agree with this. Since that IS just a terrible decision to go hiking right at that spot I lean towards the idea that they were up to something else.

They weren't tourists, they were leftist activists that I suspect where there hoping to snap photos of OUR guys doing something bad.

The irony is that they likely WERE spies, but for some leftist cause and they were probably sympathetic to the Iranians (and other brown peoples brutalized by the evil West).

They were small time journalists. The sad thing is we had them back under our control for the longest time and we could have told Iran to just fuck off. We are throwing our own under the bus here.

I don't think Iran/Iraq has a branch of the "Sierra Club".

Actually my theory is that they WERE hiking for purely recreational purposes ... they were taking a day off of their investigation of the evil imperialistic American jingo's brutality against the beautiful brown peoples of the earth and they stumbled across the border by accident.

If they were spies, the guards that arrested them would be dead. Just yer average stoopid Americans...but hey it's a hell of a way to learn the Iranian dialect! (Persian)

Hope the juice was worth the squeeze for these morons, our prisons are like vacations compared to some of these other prisons (like being a westerner in an Islamic Republic prison)... I wish that on no one. Is there any truth to .gov hanging them out to dry?

Those morons got less than I expected; I expected the Iranian court to sentence them to death. They should thank their lucky stars they only got 8 years. Hope they like playing 'goat' in prison.

If I was building nuclear weapons illegally, I'd want as many American hostages as I could get. Same people held American hostages for 444 days, if I remember correctly...entire US Embassy in Tehran. When are we bombing the underground nuclear facility in Qom? After it is too late?

Only reason they let the US hostages go was Reagan was gonna carpet bomb Tehran and leave the blocks around the Embassy unscathed. Carter is still ranked worst president ever in all the polls I have seen.
