I'll be there.

I was there (the North Shoot Location) today and had some fun by myself! 200 rounds through the XD and 150 through the M4. Sweet!

It isn't that hard to find. Take I-25 north to Hwy 66. Take Hwy 66 west to the end (pass through Lyons). At the end, make a left onto Hwy 7. Go 13.4 miles. It is near the intersection of Hwy 7 and Hwy 72 (Hwy 7 mile marker 19). There is a callbox there for a landmark. It is across the street from the callbox. There are some signs and an embankment to prevent vehicles from going in there. Climb the embankment, and you are at the location. :D

Sweet! Thanks for the coordinates and location 'yall.

That's cool that we can go there and shoot on our own, I wondered about that (and hadn't seen any posts or commentary on the subject). So what type of land is the N. Shoot? Govt? Private? Any other "official" rules about going on our own?

Also, I hate to sound like a total noob but what do you folks usually recommend for targets shooting outside like this? Of course I've used paper targets but I don't have stands to attach them. What do you guys use? Or do you use the metal reactive targets? I guess I really wouldn't know what the crap to bring.

It is a national forest area. There are signs posted (the signs to prevent vehicles from climbing the embankment) that basically say take out whatever you bring in (trash, brass, etc.) and not to shoot trees.

I brought a bunch of boxes (which I taped the targets to) and some phone books to shoot up (and to provide weight in the boxes so it wouldn't move when I shot them). Seemed to work well. Next time I will bring a staple gun though, it would be a lot quicker than taping the targets to the boxes.

If you had some extra $$ laying around and an hour or so, you could make a few of these (http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu24.htm), which are nice because they disassemble for easy transport.

a bundle of wood stakes from lowes/home depot is about 5 dollars i use the 18-24" ones, then you get a couple of boxes, if they have a refrigerator box its perfect, you cut it to the size you need. staple it to the stakes and you now have a target. I use that at the range and where ever, easy to clean up and its cheap.

I am about to make a new clay hanger since my last one was stolen.

if i can find someone locally that sells ar500 i can make a metal target

Well, bring whatever you want to shoot at as long as you clean it up when you leave. Things that shatter into millions of pieces are a bad idea eg glass, brittle plastics, computer monitors, home appliances.

A lot of people bring clays and set them up on the berm, the forest service doesn't mind cause they're supposed to break down over time.

Myself, I have been figuring out how to make steel targets on the cheap.
Here's a thread showing some of my attempts.

Driftwood-

Sportsman's Warehouse and others sell these combo target stands/first pack of targets for like $15 (replacement target packs are less, maybe $7). Tried one and the dang CO ground is so rocky and dry I bent the (cheap) thing trying to stick the base prongs into the ground. Something that'll just sit there seems better.

Stick with the KISS principle and follow some of the suggestions above. A sturdy cardboard box with some phonebooks in it for weight seems like a great idea, may try that myself next time. Seems like I get new phonebooks every month so I've got a few to spare. Take some tape and you can carry the box broken-down. Oh yeah, bring a trash bag. [wink]

Last North shoot I picked up a couple cheap gallon water jugs and put a little food coloring in 'em. Fun and easy to clean up, but only good for a shot or two (who shot those anyway? wasn't me heh). First time I did that with 2ndChildhood the jug was totally destroyed by one round of .223 at about 40yds. They lasted a bit more at longer range the second time.

And thumbs-up to devochka for the Box Of Truth link. That's a fun website.

More target ideas. Try this one.... Tape your paper bulls eye target to a piece of card board and then tape it to a real estate sign. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Tedwantsthemdead/fsbo.jpgAlso These are strong enough to pound into the ground with a hammer. They'll last awhile if you don't hit the frame. After the November Elections grab up a bunch of those wire stake lawn signs they make great targets if you can find soft enough ground to stake them down. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Tedwantsthemdead/real-cooryard.jpg

If you don't get any other takers I'll let you run the rounds through my FAL, as long as they're not superhot hunting loads or anything. (i.e. milsurp 7.62nato is fine, el cheapo remington or winchester from wallyworld is fine, wolf is fine, etc.).

Right now im in the planing stages of building a nasty varmint rifle with a wildcat cartridge.
Been talkin to a couple of barrel makers. When the plans are done, I will share it with you guys. It will probably take a while to build it but will be worth it.
Its goin to be a L---O---N---G range prarrie dog abuser, and still have the power for larger game if wanted, but probably dont want to pack the rifle around. It will be made primarily for bench rest stuff.

I'll probably be able to get to this shoot.

If anyone lives down south (Pueblo area), head east. When I lived in Cheraw the high school kids would get truck loads of watermelons and throw them all over town because of the surplus. It would get so bad that they would have to use snow plows to clear the roads.

I'm sure that you could find a farmer that would let you take quite a few off their hands.

Here's an example from last shoot:

Our shoots have few rules.

Bring what you got, shoot what you brung.

Does any one want to join me down in the South location. As a pity shoot. There is still fun to be had and ammo to be wasted.

Lets go: I've got ammo, and outerwear, lets wreck stuff up.

I'll probably regret this but, I think I'm going to pass on going to the shoot today. I thought about it this morning and was getting ready then after clearing snow off 5 cars & trucks, feeding and watering the dogs and preparing their dog run. Then shoveling the driveway, sidewalks, and shaking the show off the trees. My lower back was going out and I just went to the Chiropractor last Thursday. I just didn't want to deal with dragging all my shooting epuipment through the deep snow. For the first time in my life im feeling my age. I hope you guys have a good turn out and have lots of fun. I hope to make it to the Pumpkin Shoot at the next shoot. [postal]

I just got back from the Canyon and although the weather was perfect with zero wind the snow with hauling the equipment was a serious PITA. It had 4-6" up there of wet snow.

For some reason I couldn't hit anything today anyways. I've been playing with a cheap scope and I officially gave up on it today. I think I'll stick with my EOTech and leave the scopes off.
