hey all, read a ton of threads online about which to choose, the 4" or 6" model. own (and probably retiring) my 2" S&W mod 66 no-dash. looking to get a good .357 to practice with, use as a nightstand gun, and hopefully conceal carry.

i understand the pros and cons, and intended applications, so i guess i'm looking for not so much opinions, but a little help in this regard: some people say they shoot slightly better with one or the other, or they feel better in their hands. anybody have both models and prefer 1 over the other? more importantly, does anybody have both models and would like to meet up and go shooting?? do y'all get together and do that? would love to join up.

What in the world is wrong with a 2" Mod 66? I'd take that over a 4" or 6" revolver any day...especially if carrying it might be in my future.

Save your money...unless you just want another gun. Use it to buy ammo and practice with your 2" Mod 66.

You aren't going to get any practical benefit by going to a longer barrel for the uses you describe. As a matter of fact, you'll learn really fast that carrying a 4" or 6" revolver is a no go, more than likely.

On second thought, maybe you should sell me that 2" 66.

yeah, not for sale by any means ;)

the reason i'm 'retiring' a PERFECT mod 66 no-dash is to keep it nice and so that nothing (even out of my control) happens to it. it's been passed down 3 generations in the family (grandmother used in for police duty), and would like to pass it down again. i'd rather carry a gp100 instead of my baby :) also, i don't want to leave that one out of the safe in the rare occasion i don't have it on me.

so, does anyone actually have both or one or the another?

Both 2" 66 and 4" 28. Get a 4". The 6 is not very practical these days, imho.

ok, thanks! i won't be doing any hunting, but was wondering about recoil suppression and longer sight picture. maybe not too much difference between the 4 and 6, but would still love to try out both. maybe i could try renting from a local gun range?

I think you have answered your own question in a way. If this is a carry gun then concealability and comfort are a couple of prime considerations. Six inch is going to
be heavier and a little less concealable than a 4.
If this truly is a self defense piece sight picture and recoil are not as critical as they would be on a 50 yard paper puncher. Cripes, look at the Colt compacts that just have a trough on the slide and is plenty accurate for SD work.

I have a 6 inch 6 shot Rossi with a scope and a 4 inch 7 shot Taurus the taurus is a really accurate and fun gun would make a nice carry gun if you wanted to carry a gun that big, a 6 inch it could be done but probably very uncomfortable

I used to lean towards the longer barrels. Now all of the DA revolvers I have are 4". It's the best compromise IMHO. The 6 inch barrel gun will wind up being a "range only" gun in short order. The 4's still aren't that bad to carry.

Exactly my thoughts. The 6" is easier to shoot, but unless you are 6'6", it's just going to be too much to carry.
a 4" revolver just disappears (really) in a OWB

I know this is an old thread, but I have the gp100 in the 6 inch. A blast to shoot, but a beast to carry.
