ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The man who chased down a suspected child abductor and saved a 6-year-old girl from what could have been a horrible fate was honored as a hero Friday. But he is also gaining a new kind of celebrity: as a poster child of sorts for immigration rights in state and national immigration debates.
Antonio Diaz Chacon, 23, is married to an American and has been in the country for four years. But Chacon says he abandoned attempts to get legal residency because the process was difficult and expensive.
Diaz Chacon revealed his immigration status to Univision this week and confirmed to The Associated Press that he is illegal, prompting chatter on the Internet and social networking sites that his case underscored immigrant rights positions in two ongoing political debates.
Some argue he is an example of the kind of immigrant the federal government will now largely leave alone. The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that deportations would focus on criminals.
"As exceptional as his story is," said Christina Parker, a spokeswoman for Border Network for Human Rights in El Paso, Texas, "it points to the fact that most undocumented immigrants living in the United States are not criminals. He's more than not a criminal now. He's a hero."

So he saved a kid, but reveals he's Illegal and everyone thinks he should get a free pass, kind of like that reporter that came out a couple months ago, he still is breaking a law and needs to be punished.

Good for him!
Now they should grant a extended visa and he should go through the proper channels and get his documentation.

I don't care if he shits flowers and has superpowers. A person that choses the illegal route over the legal one, wrong over right, simply because the right path was "too difficult," is not somebody I want in my country. Deport his ass.

The problem is, for every 1 of these stories, there are 10 more about a cop who was shot by an illegal, the 3 year old girl who was killed when an illegal ran a stop light, and hit another car into the baskin robbins by my house, my neighbors who didn't pay their mortgage for 22 months, saved up all of that money, completely destroyed the house when it was forclosed on, and used that cash to buy a house outright in brighton, and our new neighbors were left with the mess... and so on.

I don't believe that "illegals" are inherently evil, but when one doesn't have any "skin in the game" or any real loyalty to this country, or accountability for what they do wrong, or free passes to either do things wrong or slush funds to pay for them not having health insurance or other programs, or ways to track them down to collect, I have a problem with that.

I would have LOVED Aurora South to pay the 10 grand left over after our insurance for my beautiful baby girl. Heck, or to not have had to pay for the insurance and have them foot the bill for the entire 20 grand. That would have been awesome. But alas, we're in the system...

+1,000,000! I agree. I don't care if he is the modern incarnation of Jesus himself, if he's not here legally he needs to get out and do it right. If it was easy and cheap America would be on the way to rivaling China's population.

To an extent I agree but I gotta say, if it were my little girl's ass he saved I'd owe em big time!!

Yup. I'd owe him. I'd buy his ticket back to his country of legal residence, then try to help him enter the country as a non-criminal.

That is the proper way to do it!

Says the guy with a comic strip of a girl being sexually assaulted in his signature line. Your opinion is irrelevant, IMO.

Laws are administered on an individual basis, yet some of you judge on a population scale. This is one person and one instance. He appears to have the right morals. Might be worth helping.

for every one of him there are 1000 that go above and beyond breaking the law besides just entering the country illegally.

Can we keep some of the illegals? I don't want to pay $5.00 for a head of lettuce. [Coffee]

very true. I would work with him to gain the legal path to residency.

But one good deed also doesn't make up for years of illegal activity.

is anyone going to start allowing michael vick watch and care for their dogs while they are on extended vacation just because he is working with an animal rights group? I think NOT

If an illegal marries a US citizen, don't they get legal status?

Nope.

I have a cousin that married a guy who was a citizen of England and you wouldn't believe how long the process took and how much money and paperwork was involved. It seems if you do play by the rules it is a major pain in the a$$.

You are correct, I'd give him a big hug (after making him take a shower), cooked him a great steak, desert and all the fixings, then, handed his ass over to the INS.

So how do you know he stinks? If it was my child he'd get a little more than a steak dinner

I don't know he stinks, I just don't like to hug people... If a cop saved your childs life, what would you do for him? If a normal every day US citizen saved your childs life, what would you do for him? Is everyone saying that because this guy is an illegal that he should get some extra attention? If you feel that way, hey, that's fine, but I'm not going to treat him any differently than I would anyone else. The fact that he is illegal should not make us feel obliged to do more for him.

I'd bet that quite a few illegals are actually named Jesus...

He deserves a one way ticket back his own country as a reward.

I never said he should get more attention because he's a illegal, (I'll let the INS give him that)I could give a rat ass who he is, or what his profession is.I'm just stating that I would do whatever I could, even tho I know I could never repay enough. Yea he's a criminal, but my hat goes off to him for actually doing something instead of just sitting on his ass and watch some stranger get abducted.
