i didnt know what section to post this in so i posted it in general. move it if it needs to be moved.

the question is how long did it take you to get your Form 1 back. I have an AR that i am thinkin about goin to around 12-14" with and was wondering how long i will be waiting.

forget the form 1. just buy a SBR lower. alan samuels had some don't know if there any left.
i was going to go Form 1 and decided not to. once you form 1 your lower it needs to be engraved with your name, city, state etc. which makes it very hard to sell if something arose and you had to sell off your guns.
my SBR lower took forever (from the mfg) but you would never know its registered as a SBR as there is nothing other then the serial # that gives it away.

if you keep the bbl length 14" use a vortex f/hider attached permanently and you stay legal w/out the need to SBR your lower.

It depends on your examiner as well as many other things like how long it takes FBI to get your prints back.

My advice is if you are concerned with a time limit don't ever think about NFA weapons. You simply submit the paper work and wait a month then check to see if it's pending. After that you forget about it and when it shows up it's a surprise.

Since ATF moved they have been much faster for some people and not others it realy depends. You are rolling the dice nobody can say.

+1, it's not worth $200 to have a 14.5" M4 barrel, just permanently attach a 1.5" or longer flash hider. If you want an 11.5" barrel I would go with a Form 1, current average wait on them is about 45 days. For the engraving you can have a jeweler do it for about $50. I think I remember the only requirements are that the letters have to be at lest 1/16" tall and .005" deep. I have seen AR receivers that were done on the bottom of the receiver by the cut out slot for the trigger and its hardly noticeable.

I dont want to do the permanent mounted flash hider on an AR. I did that on my Mak90 but i dont have a Front site to mess with on it so it was not big deal. On an AR if i had to ever remove the FSB i would be screwed.
I would want around 14" over all after the brake is on so I am thinkin 12.5-13" actual barrel length probably i will have to look at it and determine exactly what length i want.

Another question, If i register a lower as a SBR can i buy any short barrel upper i want for it after that. I.E. can i get a 10" 9mm upper if i want? As long as it only goes on that upper.

sorry for the questions I am a newb on this stuff and want to do this the legal way not billy bob with a hack saw way

Yes you can. If you are thinking of doing this you might want to write all the various calibers you think you might use on the Form 1, I don't think it is required but not a bad CYA move either.

I called and left a voice mail with them. To get a price on the SBR lowers.

I think that will be the best way to do that right now. I would buy another lower anyway to have it registered Because that way i can leave my lower alone.

If i was rich i would do a form 4 on it but those full auto parts are kinda pricey.

I think you are confused a form 1 is what you file to make a NFA weapon a form 4 is what you file to transfer an already existing NFA weapon to you.

If you buy a SBR lower from Alan you will submit a form 4. The full auto parts are only about $35 the problem is you can't register your gun as a MG. Civilian registration of MG's has been banned since 5/19/1986 thats why MG's are so expensive.

thanks for the clerification, ok so a form 4 is to transfer a already registered NFA firearm. Form 1 is if you make it/create it.

Yea I new about the 1986 deal just wasnt super clear on how it worked. I thought the weapon could be newer just the auto parts couldnt be newer then 1986 parts.
So for full auto, I would have to find a already registered M16 lower is that what you are saying?
I think Karl has been rubbing off on me, because i have looked at a couple of Mac's and even an UZI. they just look like so much fun.

thanks again everyone for answering my questions. I have tried to read the laws on some of this and they might as well be written in japanese because i dont understand half of them how they are written.
You guys are goin to force me to go broke with NFA toys now, thanks alot

You got it that is how it works. As far as M16's go there is three ways you can go.

1. A registered reciever.

The next two ways you can go allows you to convert an AR-15 you already own to full auto. These devices are considered a MG in and of themselves.

2. A registered lightening link. (You simply drop it into any AR-15 rifle with a SP-1 style carrier and it runs F/A)

3. A registered drop in auto sear. (This requires all the full auto fire control parts as well as a M16 bolt carrier)

Keep in mind that with a Link or Sear if you remove it from the host gun that gun becomes nothing more than a title 1 gun once again. This means it has to have a 16"+ bbl (unless the host is a registered SBR) and in the case of the sear you must remove all F/A fire control parts.

Hunter,
Are there any downsides to using a lightning link?

Hunter,

Not really they all have there pro's and con's. The biggest bitch about lightening links in the past is it makes the gun F/A only not select fire. There are select fire kits for lightening links so that is not an issue anymore.
