View Full Version : My 1911 fund is live...AND DEBT IS GONE

Alright fellers...Been working hard, been saving like a madman, and last night the Mrs and I paid off our debt. DEBT FREE BABY! So my commission check I get this month, I am finally able to take a little bit of it. I've got about a grand to spend on a 1911, and I've been looking and researching a ton. In the next week I want to buy a 1911 from one of these manufacturers, and need some help choosing. This is my very first 1911.
SigSauer
Springfield Armory
Kimber
Ruger
I'd like to keep it under 1k with tax, so keep that in mind. If you feel you can make a strong case for a 1911 with a manufacturer I missed go ahead. I've rented a Springfield at Bluecore and it was very impressive. I just know that I want a top tier manufacturer 1911 if possible for the money I want to spend. Freakin pumped...might slap someone in my office. What did the five fingers say to the face? SLAP!

Springfield Loaded w/nites, then replace a few parts- like the slide release, with parts from 10-8 Performance. Get some CMC Black 8-rnd Power mags. Have it tuned and throated by Bert at BPTactical. You'll be pushing about a G at that point, and you'll have a superb, tuned 1911.
I dont think you could go wrong with a Ruger Sig or Springfield, I personaly would go with the Ruger.

Or... maybe you don't care about Nite sights or an ambi-safety? Maybe you're happily right-handed and want adjustable sights? Go for the Springfield Range Officer and then do the extras I suggested. You can't lose either way, imho.

I shot one of the new Rugers a few weeks back. It ran like it was supposed to, and I think it would be a great base gun to start from. Good luck finding one right now though...
I have a Springfield TRP, and would recommend it to anyone. Out of your price range by a few hundred bucks, but well worth it if you can swing it. Their loaded models and Range Officer seem to be doing well.
I would tend to agree with Graves on the Sig. They're just weird for a 1911. I'm really not crazy about external extractors. For that matter, any 1911 that's going to require proprietary parts (yes, I know the TRP falls in that category).
Kimber - I've never been so savagely burned on a gun purchase as when I bought a TLE II. Even after a trip back to Yonkers it still didn't run (failed to feed about 2% of the time). [Rant1]
I know a lot of guys that like thier Kimber... I really wanted to like mine, but it just didn't work and thier customer service was horrible.
Again, if you're willing to go a few hundred more that what you're talking about, you could get into the realm of the TRP, Dan Wesson or a used Baer.... giant steps up from the guns we're talking about.
Good luck and let us know what you get.
STI Trojan or a Springfield.
Ruger, too new. Let someone else work out the bugs.

Thanks for the info and opinions, much appreciated. A couple questions...
So is a Sig not really a 'true' 1911...like I've heard about the Taurus 1911's that have their own proprietary parts and don't really adhere to true 1911 components? Hope that makes sense.
What am I gaining going from a SA Loaded model to the TRP? In all honestly I'm a range shooter and this gun may go in my nightstand. The TRP is just the 'professional' or law enforcement version of the SA 1911, is that right?

Some hand-fitting, full-length guide rod, checkered front-strap. That's basically the difference, but maybe I'm simplifying it too much. A new TRP will cost you a minimum of 1200, likely more, before taxes and transfer.
You can get a parked, nite-sighted Loaded for approx 770 before taxes, etc. With the Range Officer you lose the Nite sights and the ambi-safety, and gain adj sights. Cost about the same as the parked Loaded.

Thanks sneakerd...
Another question, what makes the Baers and that caliber of gun so much better than say a TRP?
sneakerd
08-26-2011, 14:10
They are virtually true customs, with beaucoup hand-fitting and super high quality. Minimum cost about 1600. The STI Trojan costs pretty much the same as a TRP.

I called into Bluecore at lunch and they had a Kimber custom II for 1170, only 5" 1911 they had. I like them, I just hear too much bad pub on them...not sure and haven't been swayed on them, but I think they look great.

Some folks swear by Kimber, some think they are trash. I have had 2 Kimbers, a Raptor II and a Pro TLE/RLII. I had no issue with either, they seemed to be well-made guns and both were accurate and reliable as long as I had them. I didn't have either very long, as I am fickle.

Goofball.[Twist] Stay within the parameters of your original post. Aprox $800 for the parked Loaded, $100 for 3 CMC mags, tuned by BPT prob less than $100. Swapping other parts may not be necessary for your purposes. Everything else is just running up the costs, and they can go as high as you want.
The other day someone told me I was eccentric. Too bad the preface wasn't "rich".
They have that Kimber for 700 shipped
Get together another $600 and buy this Wilson Combat: 248037167

That looks real nice, but just got out of debt. I'm a cash only guy, I've got a G note.
Damn this is bothering me, I love the look of the Sig's. Is there a shop around here that is really 1911 heavy on inventory? I would love to give Bluecore my biz, but not gonna happen with one 5" for inventory.

I'm in the same boat as you Uber. Looking for my first 1911 and really leaning towards the Spingfield Loaded as well and then STI next on my list. I'm gonna "window" shop 5280 as they have a pretty decent selection!!

Another member here, Bobby Fairbanks, had an almost identical experience to mine with a Kimber. I'll let him tell the story.
Ultimately, I think they spend way more on advertising than on quality control and customer service.

Man I agree You could not pay me to take that sorry excuse for a 1911, my RIA groups better than my friends kimber, and it eats anything you put in it. I came across the same thing on here I forgot were but a guy said about the kimber that wont eat SD rounds, that there is nothing wrong with a 1911 that just eats FMJ yeah there is especially when you pay over 1000 bucks for one.

Hey guys, first off thank you for all the advice...I love having this forum and you guys are a great resource. I took the plunge yesterday and picked up a reverse bi tone sigsauer 1911. I looked at probably 15til guns of various makes, and something kept drawing me back to the sig. I know its not everyones pick, but man am I pleased. I will get some pics up asap. Oh yeah btw, went to grand prix guns...best shop around.thanks again guys.

Fellas- Intention wasn't to 'go against the grain'...your suggestions and opinions are just that, and I appreciate them greatly. But to each his own, there is nothing wrong with a SA or a Sig. I held them side by side, looked at them closely, asked a ton of questions and did a bunch of research. When it boiled down to it, the sig I got felt better, looked better, than the loaded SA...and the TRP felt better than the sig, but I wasn't about to buy one for 1799. I was out the door on my sig for 1050, with night sights and a very cool 'reverse bi tone' I hadn't seen on a lot of guns. If you guys were buying my gun, I may have gone another direction. Now since I went against the grain, I'm guessing nobody wants to go shoot it with me, huh? [Tooth]

Nice, spyder, those are really nice.
I usually go to bluecore, its pretty damn close to us. I live off of Bway and 470 in da ranch. Takes me about 10-15 to get down to bluecore. I'm always down to try new spots too.
Anyway, a lot of these guys have guns that they bought from the store and have had nothing done on them. I bet my RIA at this moment shoots better than theirs does with what I've done to it. Till you start spending a couple thousand for a gun, they are all pretty much the same damn thing, don't let anyone lie to you. I love Hk's, but the truth is my USP shoots just the same as everyone else's guns, well, I have never had a failure to feed issue with mine, but, the same could be true for other members guns also. Like I said, till you start dropping a couple (and more) thousand dollars on a gun, you won't see a difference. Have fun with your sig, it shoots the same as the rest in the list.

I'm working on a deal for a used stainless TRP. If I get it, I'm going to do exactly what I suggested UberTong do to a new Loaded. Gonna get some black CMC Power mags, swap some parts if necessary and certainly put the 10-8 slide release on it, then give it to Bert to work on. I'll keep those interested advised.

Basically I had a really nice TLE custom 2 that I really loved except for the little fail to feed problem. Sent it back in for work and it looked like crap and still was having problems feeding. My money goes else where now, but if you have Kimber fever and get one that works good for you. I just don't want to roll that dice again.

Nice looking piece! I have read some of the reviews in the gun mags, most of them seem to like it. Sure looks nice imo. Cool thing about this hobby is, if you don't like it, its not hard to sell to someone else and not take it in the shorts real bad! I'm thinking about going down to Blucore this weekend and putting more rounds through my TRP, also picking up my membership card. I'm always down to meet new people, and check out everyone elses cool stuff! ;)
