Ok, I have a question for a computer savy person. One of my toshiba satellite laptops, 2006 model year, won't turn on. I should say won't even take power I guess. When I plug the cord in, no lights come on, nothing gets power to it from what I can see. The cord I used to test it in the end was the one from my other toshiba, both power supplies work just fine on my other laptop. There is a very faint clicking, or ticking noise from inside of it when I plug it in, time interval of about 3 clicks a second. My first thought is that it is the noise from the electricity from the power supply? I don't know, I'm at a loss here. Any suggestions? Thoughts? From someone who knows what they are talking about that is?

If the cord will work with another laptop then I'm going to guess it's a problem with the female end of the plug in the laptop. Possibly needs a motherboard replaced. I'm only really used to these types of problems with HP laptops so I can't say for sure.

I haven't had a board go on an HP laptop of mine but my old roommate did. All of my power related problems have been cord or battery related.

... There is a very faint clicking, or ticking noise from inside of it when I plug it in, time interval of about 3 clicks a second.

Those faint clicks could be the hard drive. They make this sound when they die. Sometimes they will do this if they cannot get enough power as well.

I was thinking hard drive also... except that none of the power lights come on at all. It's probably worth pulling the hard drive though and seeing if it powers up though, just in case it's shorting out and pulling too much juice for everything else to power on, although I've never seen that actually happen.

I have read a few other things online that it could be the battery, HD, fan and such. I have removed or disconnected each of the items just to see what happens, it still makes the noise, nothing happens.

Im confused. You have two laptops. On one laptop both power supplies work, on the other laptop no power supplies work?

And the noise is from the broken computer or one of the power supplies?

I have two laptops, both toshiba satellites, one is a little older. Both power cords work just fine, the older satellite doesn't get any power to it and makes a very faint clicking (for lack of a better description) noise when the power cord is plugged into it.

I really cant say what that would be, electricity not in the right place or in the right amounts can make sound, did it just stop working or was it dropped or something? When I was in high school I had to resolder on the power plug back onto the board of a laptop that was dropped, but I do not remember any clicking. Frankly, at the cost of laptops now, it would be cheaper to buy a new one then try to fix an old one. A hard drive problem would be much much louder and youd know exactly where it was coming from. I am at a loss on this one.

I say shoot it.

We had a Toshiba with a similar issue. When we took it for repair, the tech said that he had seen several Toshibas with the same problem. He said the power cord plug tends to "auger out" the computer's input jack. He tried to re-solder the connection, but couldn't. Next stop, BestBuy for a new laptop.

Disclaimer: the shop we took it to is now out of business....

Ok, the clicking noise is more like the snap of electricity jumping I guess. Like when you pull a plug wire off to see if it is getting spark to the plug, only, way way more quiet. You have to listen for it or you wouldn't notice it.

It sounds like you need a new DC jack on your motherboard. There are repair shops that can do it, but would probably need your laptop in-house when they order the part, wait for the part, and install the part. Most likely, it is the DC jack that is bad. It could be the motherboard, but this doesn't sound like a motherboard issue.

Estimated repair shop cost for DC jack replacement: $150
Estimated repair shop cost for motherboard replacement: $400

I know it's a bit north of you, but Friendly Computers in Colorado Springs should be able to help you; they do the DC jack replacements quite well and quickly.

One valuable item everyone seems to be forgetting Spyder... is that you are in the taint...

There is no Best Buy..
Probably no repair shop or Radio Shack either..

It's the suck of Trinidad killing your computer! [Muaha]

Computers are just like living things. Eventually they all die. If you bought it in 2006 and it just now crapped out I would say you did pretty good. Just toss it and get a new one. When laptops were well over $1000 my answer would probably be different. But I can't tell you the last time I paid more than about $400 for one.
