On tlc, anybody watching it. Pretty interesting to see what families do to prepare regardless of the situation. What are your thoughts on it.

I'm pretty quiet. I have been on the forums for years, never signed up until recently and never posted until now, because I'm fired up. The media always will find a way to make us look " crazy" out there. They had to focus on one person at all of the important segment points, ie: before commercials and at the end, that wasn't really what I would say was typical of us, but was good for them to further their agenda. With that said, it is always good to see what others are doing to prepare, listening to them, and then incorporating what works for my family and collaborating when possible. It's never a one size fits all when it comes to preparing, it all depends on many variables.

Welcome to the forum, I agree in the media focusing on the not so normal. The family that had turned swimming pool into a green house with fish was a good concept. Hopefully it will open the eyes of some Americans who aren't prepared even just for natural disasters.

Because regular preppers are not that boring the media has to focus on the abnormal.

Tons of people do it on many different levels. In fact a lot of older folks did it/do it because of what they experienced during the depression. My grandparents stock piled tons of canned goods and water along with guns. They weren't ready for anything specific but just wanted to be ready.

Maybe it's just trying to "cash in" on recent events but I'm seeing more and more canning supplies popping up in store displays. Heck I was in Ace hardware yesterday and they had a huge display set up with all the Ball jars, pots and other supplies.

Seems like a push to bring back canning. I wouldn't mind learning more about it

The "Ball" book is a good place start. We started canning 3 years ago. We do water bath (high acid foods) and pressure cooker (low acid foods) methods.

Meats are a piece of cake. prep the jars and lids, precook the meat, cut into strips or chunks, jar hot with about a tablespoon of water in the jar, store for your future eating pleasure. Its a little odd at first, but after the first batch you see its easier than bulk veggies.

Being able to get by for 3-4 weeks is what I grew up with. There was no talk about survivalists back in the 60's-70's except for some of the nut jobs that wanted to create there own "utopia".

I watched too, thought it was clever how the couple turned their swimming pool into a greenhouse. And all the various mini systems that supported each other. Apparently they must not have a HOA, could you imagine doing something like that in Highlands Ranch?

My wife and I grew up in the Midwest, canning is what everyone did in the fall, simply being self-sufficient. I'm grateful we grew up with that instilled mind set. We'll start canning soon, as we do every fall.
