That's pretty awesome. I've seen lots of those videos and they are fantastic.
But why would you bother to wear a helmet?

It's modified base jumping. I have a couple friends who do it and it's pretty awesome stuff. The suits are nicknamed "Flying Squirrel Suits" and probably the most fun you'll ever have with your clothes on- and from what these friends say you should really try doing it out of an airplane at about 10,000 feet. If it's a good helmet and you land head first it'll do a good job of containing the goo so cleanup is easy! [ROFL2]
That was amazing. Could that be done around Colo.?

A friend of mine in the USAF did some stuff with those, they've been testing them, but HALO rigs are pretty much the top of the line right now, so it's looking like 'ol DOD doesn't want to incur any new budgetary woes.

You start by becoming an excellent parachutist, then you move up to the wing suit flights out of a plane, then you do base jumps in the wingsuit, and after doing it enough and learning to fly, you get bolder and bolder. And then one day, you hit a boulder.
PS, that song grew on me enough to grab the album.

The part that really surprised me is how close he came to the ground in some places. Holy shit!

I imagine the helmet is more for mounting the camera and providing a windshield.

The helmet will help with aerodynamics, and help you keep your vision clear and tear-free. That's kinda important IMO. I used to skydive in the 80's, and it's kinda windy on the eyeballs. Goggles ain't gonna cut it.
Jeesus, all you'd have to do is clip a tree branch at that speed and you're done.....your death would be spectacular for sure.

1) That's that song that they play on 93.3 all the time. I really like it, but can never understand any of the words. Doesn't help that my speakers are terrible.
2) I've seen a bunch of these as well and they are great. With how close he comes to the ground, it seems lame when he pulls the chute when he's still so high up. Awesome.

I looked into it and apparently going that fast that close to the ground, he's riding on basically a cushion of air... very low drag.

I think you're describing "ground effect", which is when the air the craft (or person in this case) is displacing is running into the ground producing higher pressure under the wings than it would when the ground isn't there. He'd have to be near the ground for a few seconds for the effect to do anything though. It didn't look like he had enough time to really settle into that.

The one where the guy hit the bridge was at the Royal Gorge. I know a guy who was playing with his band on the bridge when the guy hit. He said it sounded like a bomb went off and the railing was all bulged out.

I think his wife was on the bridge when he hit it too...
That guy that hit the bridge was considered one of the worlds best base jumpers.
The OP video gave me goose bumps. I have seen these videos before and I WILL do that at some point...actually I know at what point. The point when I have tons of money to learn to skydive, become an expert and travel the world to these base jumping locations. Better get to work...
