View Full Version : 1979 Cutlass
http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l628/atrain18/015-1.jpg[quote] My 79 Cutlass 388 stroker with vortec heads with 202/160 manley titanium valves tripple valve springs pocket ported and shaved to 60cc's Edelbrock RPM intake and 507/510 lift cam with a 284/294 duration, turbo 350 transmission with a nasty shift kit 4.11 Richmond gears with a nice eaton posi, headers and a really nice custom 3 inch dual exhaust with the sickest H pipe I have seen. The car is incredibly fast love putting down Rice burners in it, that is one of my favorate past times[Muaha] the future things I am going to do, built 700R4 transmission with manual valve body reverse shift and trans brake, I like the lower first gear in the 700R4 with the ET streets I will be shocked if she does not bring the front tires off the ground. It was built for NOS but have never had a use for it, but I am thinking of a 175 shot just to have it, and will probably have the set up all the way up to 200 shot I believe it will handle it, it is built solid. I was also thinking of doing H-beam connecting rods so I can spray a 100 to 125 shot coming out of the hole and then hit a second stage 200 going into second or third probably third. next time the car hits the track it will get kicked off for no roll cage which is in the near future also, just want to get kicked off of the track for being to fast first. I am sure I am forgetting alot of stuff I have so much work into the car it is not even funny. Also going to do the lowering springs to drop the front and back, it has air shocks to control how high the rear end rides, maybe drop spendles instead I am not sure yet, going with all poly graphite bushings I want the thing to corner as well as be fast, it corners pretty good with the 4 link rear end but it needs new bushings. Body and paint, it has all new body panles and new black pearl paint, the pictures do it no justice. It has been run out at the track with 3.42 gears that were binding up I had the stock cam in it with 76cc heads and a stealth intake to try to pass emissions and street tires that are on it in the pictures. 14.8 was the best time, with all the new stuff it should at least take 2 seconds off if not more. Here is a shot of the Engine with all the old stuff, will update when she comes out to play again.http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l628/atrain18/023-1.jpg

That car is effin' sick!!!
All that work for only a 14.8? Should have just turbocharged it.

The A/G bodies are great cars. I put a 455 in place of the 301 in my 80 Grand Am in 84. Have to put a pic up when I get home.
I still have one left and that is the 86-1/2 Grand Prix 2+2.

Nice!
All that work for only a 14.8? Should have just turbocharged it. Like I said that was before and it has never seen a set of tail lights I wont even waste the race fuel on a mustang anymore, it is scary now and when something pulls up and hears it they dont even give it a try. And even if it still ran a 14.8 that is a fast street car, I had an 82 Z28 that ran a 12 flat, and this car is very close if not faster I have to put her back on the track next year, I can only run her at the KBPI car show so I can run without a cage. And thanks for all the compliments Guys the pictures do her no justice looks way better in person, I will see if I can post some pictures from the last show.

Pretty nice ride man! You need to get some gear in that sucker though! lol. I hate to say it, but 14.8 isn't that fast for a street car anymore buddy. It was, back in the 90's. With all these production pony cars running that or better from the factory, and minor boltons...even at our altitude, its a bit slow. Nice car though, cool to see something different for sure!
Oh and btw....i've got a set of tailights i'd be more than happy to show you! Better have that bottle heated up with the big jets brother! ;)

Oh and btw....i've got a set of tailights i'd be more than happy to show you! Better have that bottle heated up with the big jets brother! ;) Oh I got alot more than that, I only put up what I wanted people to know, if you have noticed I have not posted my stall speed and alot of other things someone would like to know before they race it, I can tell you this it will take a new gt500 with no problem by about 3 1/2 cars, Oh and I forgot to mention that 14.8 run was with a crappy start almost 3/4 of a second reaction time and I shifted into 3rd at 4500 instead of 6000 with the old set up. the Engine was built by bowers racing to handle alot of nos, now I have never used it and probably never will, I have not come across anything that has giving me a reason to. I dont know how it would do up against a new vette I have a rule of not racing corvettes, they are my favorate car and our American sports car, I have only raced one vette and broke my rule in my 12 sec Z28 and I felt really crappy after I wasted an American Icon.
Reaction time has zero affect on the time. What did you trap at? I know all about having a car that is faster than the tires and driver.

Irving is correct. Your slow reaction time has absolutely nothing to do with your slow ET lol. The time doesn't start until you break the beams, you could sit there for half a day and it wouldnt change your ET. What does the car trap and how much does it weigh with you in it? That will tell you how much power the car makes, and what it's capable of ET'ing with a clean pass, tire hook, and driver mod.
You beating a new GT500 by 3 1/2 cars does nothing for me bro. To be honest with you, a 12 second street car isn't all that fast either. And even if you put that 200 hit of spray on your car, and shaved two or two and a half seconds off of your ET....i'm confident i'd have you covered! ;) I'm not even going to say my car is really all that fast, because in all reality, its not. There is always someone faster than you. I'm not a huge import fan, but I know plenty of them that would hand you, and me our asses. You need to have respect for other cars out there. Plenty of them are fast, and plenty of them would put bus lengths on you.
Tossing a Stang a beatin' isn't saying much at all.

Oh no. [Sofa]
I spent like $900 to turbo my 1990 Integra and got a 13.8 out of it. It weighed 2550 without me in it and dyno'd at 277 whp. I'm sure it was faster than I could drive it. I usually got a 14.00 - 14.2 with like a 2.6 second 60' time. I did trap at 106 mph though.
I was a crappy driver with bald Wal-mart tires and an open diff. Zero suspension mods.
I was just happy to beat all the stock Vettes at the time. Never did get to race a ZO6 though. This was back when they were a lot slower than they are now, maybe back in 2002 or 2003? That car sure was fun though. All the RWD guys that trapped around 106ish mph, were running 12.8.
Reaction time has zero affect on the time. What did you trap at? I know all about having a car that is faster than the tires and driver. That is the second guy that tried to tell me that so I guess if you sitt at the line for 10 seconds and then go it wont affect your time, I have been racing for a long time reaction time has everything to do with your time

Plenty of them are fast, and plenty of them would put bus lengths on you. First off you are ignorant if you think a true 12 second street car is not fast, and when did I say I had the fastest car on the planet, second I know there is always some one faster, third ricers wont even try it when they hear the car and feel it vibrating there recycled washer which kind of disappoints me I love eating rice. we wont even get on the 12 second Camaro that is only cause it smoked the tires half way down the track never could get it to hook up, and the only race I ever lost in it was to a 10 sec blazer that I started to catch up to, The only problem with that motor is I could not find a trans to take the HP, now that same set up is in my Cutlass and just blew up another transmission. Oh and since we are on the subjuct of other peoples cars I know a guy that has over 100k under the hood of his s10 has to press down on the brake with both feet at the 1000 foot and still runs a 9.60. And when I was talking vettes I was talking about the newer cars. And I think your full of crap if you are talking about taking 2 seconds off of my current time and saying that is not fast, now to guys running 8, 9 , 10, second cars that have money it is slow, I just dont remember turning this into a pissing contest but hey I am at the KBPI car show every year, just look for the pearl black cutlass with that everyone thinks is a Grand national which I guess is a slow car to on your scale. I am the type of guy I will believe it when I see it.
Guys that say things like your 12 second street car is not fast, and stuff like I put a turbo on my ricer and beat everything on the track, either 1 have never been on a track 2 think there car is fast cause it has stickers and a fart can and turbo, the last cute turbo ricer I raced that sounded like a pissed off squirrel wrx sti when I pulled 2 gear my car kicked sideways in front of his, he would not even look at me at the next light. And whats with the ricer flybye you have already been beat bad, a pinto could pass a car doing the speed limit.

Atrain, this guy knows more about cars and drag racing than you do! Everything he is saying makes sense. It adds up. Your stories, sound like just that. His power to weight ratio, along with his trap speeds all add up. Before I started doing anything to my car, other than a cold air intake, tune, and gears it ran 14.2 @ 99mph all day long. Both of those numbers add up pretty well. I had crappy 60' times of 2.1 or 2.2 most of the time because I ran it on street tires. On some stickies, it probably would have ran in the high 13's. A "true" 12 second car up here is respectable....is it FAST? No, not really. Not anymore. Up here, right now, a full weight production vehicle that runs deep in to the 11's, or in the 10's is considered pretty damn fast.
I'll post more when I get home. [ROFL1]

The last time I had a guy in a ford probe try to race me that said he had a 12 second car, he backed out when he seen my time slip, I have put up pictures of my car and what is under the hood, all I hear from you guys is stories, and as far as you guys coming in and saying I never stop all I did was post some pictures of my ride, I did not say anything about anyone elses car until they started in, but thats all I have to say, the car is at the KBPI car show every year 3 bucks a race you guys can come beat my Cutlass all day.

Did you even bother to read the link? Reaction time pertains to you, and the other vehicle you are racing. It has nothing to do with your own, personal elapsed time! Man, you just don't get it do you? lol.
Upon leaving the staging beams, each vehicle activates an elapsed-time clock, which is stopped when that vehicle reaches the finish line.
I'll tell you all about my car if you want to know. I can post up time slips, and videos. That Camaro looks like it's doing about 120 just sittin' there. Yeah they definitely did a good job on that car, I am a chevy guy to the bone and would never own a ford or a dodge but I will say that they both did a great job on the Mustang and the Challenger, actually I would own a 56 ford truck but I would have all chevy running gear, and I dont think I could turn down a new GT500 KR Either those are the only fords I would own, and of course the 67 GT500 that car is just downright bad. But there is nothing as far as cars go that I would take over a 68 Corvette with a 427/4speed and dual 4 barrels, they were under rated @ 435 HP, my buddy had a book that showed the actual HP on that car with all the factory options you could add, you could get the car with about 590 BHP.

Damn, I never knew stompin' the pedal sooner resulted in quicker ET's. [LOL]
Does that mean if I got to the track bright and early, I automatically winz? Atrain, I'm sure it's been said here before but your ET doesn't start until your reaction after green (RT) - what you do between the time the tree goes green and when you mash the pedal has ABSOLUTELY NO bearing on how long your ET will be.

Well here you go then. It wasn't even a giant turbo. It was only a T3/T3 with .48 exhaust housing and .60 compression side. I put larger fuel injectors, an SAFC, and 2.5" exhaust from the down pipe back.

Feels like I'm back in high school.
It is scary what a fast street car is becoming. I grew up in Casper WY and at the time, a low 12 second car was pretty damn fast. My buddy has my old 99 Z28 (has since put a built 408 in it) and has ran a 10.8 in Douglas. That time is pretty average for the group of guys that we used to hang out with.
Even back when I raced in 2004, there were guys in daily driven Honda Civics running 10.4's. I think one guy even drove up from the Springs to Bandimere, ran 10's all night, then drove home.
I've got about 10 other time slips. I don't have any pictures of the car any more though. I was wondering the other day why I was keeping time slips from Club Clash from 7 years ago. I guess I'm glad that I did. I can go online and post time slips to, was not trying to change the subject just making a point what you guys turn a simple picture post into, I posted pictures of my car and what it did with the old set up in it, and you got all the guys that got to turn it into a pissing contest, my car has a bone stock 350 in it now, I run it just to have fun it runs an 18.6 see you at the track.
I just anticipated you complaining that I only posted one. So I wanted to let you know up front that I've got about 10 more with the same car number and similar times.

I just anticipated you complaining that I only posted one. So I wanted to let you know up front that I've got about 10 more with the same car number and similar times. I dont care how many you post I dont know were they came from, like I said if you are out at the track when I am there every year then I can see it, then i will believe it, I can post my time slips to, If you are really a racer then you and I both know no one really post there real times, dont get me wrong I did post the 14.8 and that was an accurate time for what was in the car at that time. What the car had when it ran that time 383 stroker bored 30 over (388) stock cam stock converter weiand stealth intake 3.42 gears with the pinion bearing set wrong so my rear diff was binding up column shift 100 octane race fuel and some weathered Falken 205/60/15, I never wanted to race the car this way, but my brother pushed me into it I had 4 days to get my car going and ready to race and pass tech. I did not have time to do anything that I needed to cause I was not going to race this year, that is all I will say about the car I have already said to much when I posted it but I did not think it would be anyone I would be racing.

-I can only run at retarded KBPI events because I don't have a cage. ----- Check
Was there a head wind? Did you forget to warm up your tires? Was your car running too long in line and then got too hot?

Ok wait a minute here. So now you're saying this car currently has a bone stock 350 in it, & not this 388" ground pounding stroker motor that just scares any would be racers away? Because you made it pretty clear in your first post that it currently has the .030 over 383. But that your 14.8 pass was on a stock grind cam, binding gearset (whatever that means lol) and shitty heads. You need to get your story straight, because I'm really smelling some BS!
Orrrrr, is this your "Fast and the Furious" attempt at trying to hustle us? LOL. Come on man, just be straight. The car is what it is, it runs what it runs....if you don't know, then just say "I don't know". I haven't ran mine at the track in 3 years, been so busy with work, other hobbies, and other peoples cars I just haven't had the time. I honestly don't know exactly what it will run now. It would run very consistent 12.5 - 12.7 passes at club clash. That was basically just bolting up the blower kit, with the stock 3.4" pulley, a conservative canned tune, off road pipe and gears. I've done quite a bit to the car since then.
Here are the pics and vid's I promised.....

This is from the one and only time the car has been on a dyno, after I put the blower on just to make sure the canned tune was cool, and the AFR was in check.

Come on you really believed me when I said it had a bone stock 350, I was being SACASTIC I really dont know what it will run now, I do know that it has all the same stuff my 12 second Camaro had in a car that does not weigh as much, and a automatic trans instead of a 5 speed, and I am thinking of having a custom ground cam built specifically for my set up instead of the cam that I have, see if I can get a few more pony's out of it. I was straight with you on the car being a 14 second car. It had the following parts, 388 stroker built by Bowers racing 350/410 HP/fpt (The parts on the engine) 76 cc heads with 202/160 valves screw in studs guide plates with those heads it had 9.5 to 1 comp ratio, built for NOS, Weiand Stealth intake manifold with a stock camshaft and torque converter, Holley carburetor unknown CFM I was told it was a 750, MSD distributor cap rotor and 8.8 wires, AC Delco Rapid fire # 2 plugs that need to be changed. Flowtech Headers with a 3 inch custom exhaust with one of the coolest custom H-pipe set ups I have seen in a while, Thrush 2 chamber welded mufflers with turndowns right before the rear axle. I used 3 inch with the turn downs cocked to the side for that nice throaty deep vibrating sound, I should have left the turndowns off so you cant hear yourself think inside the car. Turbo 350 transmission with a really nasty shift kit kicks car sidways when it pulls second and chirps third, 3.42 rear end gears that some one had set the pinion wrong so it was binding up with a 3 series posi trac rear differential I did not have time to fix, I figured it would be good for a few runs, I have a 28 spline locker for it just did not have the axles. Already on the car when I purchased it 9 year old Falken 205/60/15 tires that were hard and weather checked. the stuff I added in the 4 days. I purchased the car the way it was other than what I put down, keep in mind I had 4 days to do this. I purchased the car that had the motor built by bowers the guy put 2500 to 3000 miles on it to break it in and then let it sit in his garage for 9 years, I dont think he had the money to finish the car. at least that is what he told me. New parts I installed, replaced 1406 600 CFM carburetor with a brand new holley 750 CFM. Replaced 3 1/2 inch single exhaust just up to the cat nothing after words with the dual 3 inch custom exhaust system, with the thrush welded mufflers. Fixed leaking front and rear main seals on engine and front seal on transmission do to drying up from sitting for so long, I did not want to leak anything on the track, and wanted to make sure I passed tech. Replaced steering box and power steering hoses and pump, they all leaked bad, it had a one tire fryer so I had to throw in a gm 3 series posi traction rear end off of CL, which I dont understand why it was not done to begin with the 3.42 gears were also Richmond so some one had been inside it before. I replaced all 4 shocks cause the front tires were rubbing when the car would go over bumps, replaced the rear with Air shocks. Got a battery tie down excel super coil for HEI distributor and the MSD 8.8 wires. I tried a different set of plugs but it did not run and no one had the # 2 Rapid fire plugs, special order only and I only had 4 days so I put the old plugs back in. I purchased a B&M Ratchet shifter but ran out of time so I used the column shift. Installed oil battery and temp gauges with a 5 inch tachometer with a big amber shift light, lights up the inside of car when it is time to shift. I am sure I am forgetting alot of stuff but that is what I can think of right now, I just got off of work and had a long ride home after running security for a wedding and bike run, chasing a couple of jackasses That were trying to start crap. Now back to the car I only raced cause my brother talked so much crap about how he would win by default if I did not show up, he knew I did not plan on racing this year so he started in on me 5 days before race day. So I went to work, my best time was a 14.8 with a .232 reaction time, worst run was 15.2 with a .659 reaction time. Now the funny thing was my brothers car blew the rear main seal on the way up right after having his brand new 403 olds in his flawless 1978 Trans AM, right after having his brand new motor Dyno tuned by G.A.M which covered my other brothers Flawless 1979 Z28 in oil that was driving behind him. I was smart I Trailered my car out with half a tank of gas and 2 5 gallon jugs with the rest, they both left on a flat bed but mine came in on one. so not only did I win by default LOL, he tried to race me in his girlfriends 95 Z28, He ran a 15.8 with a 15.6 best time. He told me I messed up his staging do to coming out of the burn out box a little hot I had to back up a little. But he had no excuse when I asked why my worst time was better than his best time, and would not race me again. My Brothers Z28 ran a 15.5, and my buddy's truck ran a 17.4 I think against my other friends 88 K5 blazer that ran a 19.6, so at least with all the people I went up with I left with the fastest time. My brothers Z28 who ran the 15.5 ran on the dyno with 300/325 HP/Foot pounds

Good god! lol. Ok man, ok. Still though, you keep mentioning reaction time....I'm telling you, your reaction times do not change your ET. Reaction time is the amount of time it takes you to leave the tree and break the beams. The ET timer does not start until after you break the beams. Everyone is telling you the same thing, I posted the line right from the NHRA website....dude! lol.

edit: nevermind following the story and what i can pick out on the pic of the engine is giving me a head ache That is a picture of it before I did anything to it, I have looked through my computer 2 or 3 times and I cant find any of the engine after I worked on it.
So why did you choose to do all the work to the Mustang and not your Camaro?

Having rebuilt puters this was a scan of a couple of pics of my Grand Am. Top one was taken in Belgium in early 1981 right after I got it off the boat. Still has the Oregon plates on it. Second one is 84 at Ft Benning Ga right after I painted it. Pulling the Landau roof and all the trim was fun.
I kept the car until 2007 when I sold it to a guy in NE. It had 70K on it by then. http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/jerrymrc/cars/nextold-pics040.jpg

Atrain created his own issues here by being a braggart. I've asked him several times to meet me to shoot- he won't do it, has an excuse every time. I'll stand up and pay attention again when I hear he has won a 3-gun match. Should not be an issue based on his self-professed expertise.

As one of the laid-off masses, I try not to shoot on weekends, as it gets pretty crowded. I could be convinced maybe to go to Firing Line this coming Sunday- 1st thing when they open, as I'm a member there. I'd like to check out your TRP- you know, fire all of your ammo and hand it back to you- that would be cool!!

Uhhh...from your posts. It's not that anyone doubts your chronological age...it's more your mental age. I'd say 14 to 16 pretty much nails it. But, hey.... You have a vivid imagination and it's quite entertaining.

If you weren't such a braggart, it wouldn't be an issue.
I was in the right place at the right time when I purchased that car, I paid 1440.00 for the car all new body panels new pearl black paint and the bowers built engine, new transmission, and the after market wheels. I did not buy the car the first night I looked at it cause I thought it was to good to be true, and it needed a starter and the guy would not let me put a starter in, so I figured the Engine was froze but he just did not want me running the car with 9 year old fluids. I ended up putting the starter in cause we had to, it was the only way to get the car on the trailer. I was very happy when I heard it turn over and start, drove up on the trailer and drove it off changed everything before it was ever fired off again, he took 60 bucks off of the 1500.00 price tag for the price of the trailer, he was a real stand up guy, I send him pictures as I work on the car.
