View Full Version : Winchester Model 12 - Smith recommendation

I have a Winchester Model 12 made in 1915 that needs some work done. The gun belonged to my great-great grandfather and was passed on to me in in the mid 1990's. While I don't plan on firing this gun myself anymore, I would like for it to be in good working condition if and when the day comes that I get to pass it on again and teach another in the line how to shoot.

Currently, the action will freeze up solid after firing a round and it will not cycle out the spent shell. It has to be taken apart with a good deal of force in order to remove the shell and get the gun back to cycling. However, another shot fired from it locks it up solid again.

My grandfather did take it to a smith back in Iowa when it first happened, but the smith couldn't repair it and it was just another shotgun at that point to my grandfather so he didn't go any further with it.

Apart from getting it functioning, I would also like to get the ring at the end of the slide cleaned up. I'm not sure when the damage was done, but I cringe every time I look at it -

If anyone here is willing to take this one, or can recommend someone who can, please let me know!

Hmmm let me see....
You need a Smith, preferably up north that is reasonably priced, that can turn it around in a reasonable time, familiar with a Model12 and competent?

If you can go to the nearest gunsmithing school or a Winchester forum.

and what state are you in? as a gunsmith I know the location of most schools.

I've seen some Remingtons do this when firing some brands of the cheaper low-based shells.
