Not to be a downer, but why don't the tanks just shoot them?

Collateral damage.. And an increased risk of civilian casualties.

You know KILO's. First you have to wake them up, then they want chow. Then they will stop at the PX for some Mt. Dew, then rummage through the MRE's to Rat Fuck a whole box to get the good ones and leave the Veggie Omletes......wait, that sounds like 19 Delta Scouts too!!!![Tooth]

You'd be surprised how little damage a HEAT round does. There was a good article in armor magazine about how API .50 cal will keep going through several walls before stopping, while a HEAT or MPAT will explode on impact.

I don't buy it the collateral damage shit, if they are close enough to make an "ID" they can tell if they are near civvies. Sounds like they are just as guilty. If that's the roe now the. We really need to get the fuck out of that place.

I've been saying for years a 242 would be a dream gun there. Don't argue with a 25.

Not in the Afghanistan rocky terrain. Anyone hiding in the rocks along a mountainside should be lit up like the 4th of July with a round! Just think of the psychological impact it would have to the Taliban if they knew that if they were hiding out/scouting a route from a hillside that your ass would be targeted with a SABOT or HEAT round...!

Those tankers don't get off their tanks for anything! I was in the NTC and watched as their 1SG drove up to each tank, handed each crewman a plate of hot A's and went on to the next tank. I've even seen them sh*t off their tank and never unass!

Collateral damage is a part of war. Ugly, sure, but that's exactly what war is. Minimize collateral damage as much as possible but don't let it restrict you to where you can't accomplish your objective efficiently and effectively.

On another note, yall should check out Shooter... the book, nothing to do with the movie as far as I know. First person account of one of the top USMC snipers during the initial surge in Iraq, talks about how he would secure himself to the top of HMMWVs and shoot from them using them as a mobile cover/vantage point.

Wouldn't be kind of easy to tell where he is though. Just doesn't seem smart to me.

While logic would say yes, he didn't get to be the top USMC sniper in the war for nothing...

Tankers aren't lazy about getting off the vehicle. Its just a real pain to get the tracked in dirt and mud out of the crew compartment once it gets in.
That's why they let the other guys do target assessment.

My serious guess would be ROE. It damn near takes an act of congress to drop ordnance or call arty. I don't know what the ROE for tanks is but I imagine it's tough too.

My tongue in cheek answer would be money. 7.62mm is a lot cheaper than 120mm. ;)

3/2 was my sister Battalion. Semper FI Betio Bastards.

Back when being deployed was fun, 3d ACR's ROE was if it shoots it get a 120mm. Good policy if you were on a tank, not so good if you weren't. [Tooth]

a lot of people including the higher ups act like a HEAT or MPAT will implode an entire city block.
If the crews are chambering rounds then they are prepared to use them, regardless of cost, as most of the casings are cheap and break often.
