Any opinions? I know shot placement is key. Thank you

308 is plenty for ANY North American big game given good shot placement.

Shot lots of moose and caribou with a 308.

there is nothing on the North American continent that hasn't been taken with a .30-06 the .308 is virtually identical in performance. Either round is ideal for hunting. Very predictable, hard hitting good speed. I always contend it's not the caliber of the gun it's the caliber of the shooter.

If it were me, I'd get a quality 165 grain or 180 grain bullet. I'd practice and know I was good out to 400 or 500 yards. 300 yards is a piece of cake, 400 takes a little practice and 500 takes a little more pratice. Finding a quality round that shoots good at 100 yards out of your gun, is a good start. Then use a ballistic chart to help you move out farther. A ballistic chart is no replacement for a little practice but it sure makes it easier and takes out a lot of the guess work.

I have always found that the bullet that shoots the best at 100 yards, shoots the best at 500 yards.

308 is plenty of good medicine for elk.

Hornady SST are good bullets. I also like the Barnes Tipped Triple Shock X (TTSX) bullets. They are available in 168gr match.

The problem with .50BMG is that you hit them a mile and a half away and then have to hike to whats left of the carcass [ROFL1]

Yes, that's what I use for my 30-06. Going to try to reload some as well. Pretty good load IMO.
